The Random Thought Thread

I didn't say he wasn't, but to say hands down he is without even considering players like Alan Page who put up big numbers and in 14 game seasons, plus had go back and check Alan Page's numbers. He had one season with 18 sacks in a 14 game season and in his career he had 148 sacks. Those 148 sacks also come in an era where they weren't passing as much. I've watched both of these guys play and both of them are / were dominant at their positions. Both of them are GOATs.

Just as you say we need to stop over glorifying past players, I'm going to say we need to stop bringing up current day players and automatically say they are the best. Most people on these boards haven't even seen the past players who were generational talents in their own right.

I'm still not convinced Brady is the greatest of all time, but I don't compare QBs from different eras. It was a different time, they passed the ball less, the defenses had different rules to defend offenses, which limited the numbers. I'd put Montana and possibly Sammy Baugh up their with Brady. I have Sammy Baugh as one of the greatest players of all time, period.
Just as you say they pass more these days different era and all that, but back in Alan page days there were no quick release offenses, it was run, run, under center deep drop and bombs away on third down, no shotgun, no moving pockets, no complex blocking schemes, and the average offensive lineman was 50 lbs less than the average OL today. Back then, the great players absolutely dominated in a much weaker pool of talent, they stood out easier, today it’s a prerequisite to even make it in the nfl outside of qb/k/p to be a world class freak athlete, so much so that players who would outsize and outrun athletes in every league in the world flame out in the nfl every year.

Aaron Donald would average 20 sacks a year back then

and considering Baugh to be anywhere close to Brady further proves my point. No qb who played in those days could hold Brady’s drawers

What more does Brady need to do for you? The question is not , is he the greatest to play the game, he is. The only argument left is : Is Brady the most accomplished athlete of all time?

That’s difficult to compare and quantify achievements in the different sports. In no particular order it’s Muhammad Ali, MJ, Brady, Jack Nicklaus, Rodger Federer, Tiger , and probably Micheal Phelps.

ok, the Bucs and Patriots have signed veterans, but they haven't traded away 1st round picks year over year over year. No one has outside of the Rams, so don't try and compare them. They still are drafting players high in the draft, unlike the Rams.
I mean... the Patriots kind of have. 2013, 2016, 2017, 2020 they didn't have first round picks, mostly because they traded for veterans or moved out of the first round entirely. They also are pretty much the poster-boy for having a roster full of veterans, considering how bad they've been in the draft for like the last decade almost.
If you think about it, the only difference between somebody trading away a first round pick for a quality veteran vs trading away a first round pick to obtain more picks later in the draft is money. If you can afford the veteran, most teams that are trying to win are going to take a chance on that guy as opposed to gambling on mid round picks and hoping something sticks. You'll get more quantity of players that way, but not necessarily more quality of players.

Obviously the Chiefs are much closer to the Rams in this regard, and I think you'll see the Bucs take this approach very soon too, considering they're really only in year 2 of this whole "all in" thing. I think you'll see them be much more active in the FA/veteran market this offseason as opposed to waiting on draft picks to develop.

So you just gonna forget about floyd huh and serena

Yes and it took until halfway through his post gronk career for many to consider him the goat, and it wasn’t until Tampa that it practically became unanimous lol. Kinda proves my point that we over glorify past players for some odd reason
Not even up for debate no more.. brady is by far the goat.. now would i choose him over arod or peyton on my team… idk but that guy is by far the greatest qb ever and will be forever till football go away

It is difficult to say "the best of all time", each person will be based on their own tastes to explain it.
statistics? titles, skill? influence on the game?
In addition to being difficult to compare in different times, either by rules, field of play, physical preparation, systems.
As qb i don't know if he is the best Brady, the things that I have seen from Marino / Montana make me doubt, as a player and leader maybe yes, I brought "his" culture to Tampa and it changed them completely.
I don't think I will measure up to Jordan, Maradona, Senna.

Man fuck Floyd he shouldn’t even be mentioned among goats, he handpicks his fights and turns fights down until guys are past their primes, the goats didn’t cherry-pick fights they took any fight that came their way because they knew they were winning no matter what.

It really can’t be argued lol, no qb has that intangible thing that Brady has, he’s a fucking assassin

The AFC North is so up for grabs its crazy. We NEED to be strong in the division and we've already dropped a home game. Can't afford to lose any more easy games. Gotta have that killer instinct in the division. I fear we drop one to both Pitt and Cleveland.

it's a competitive division - the division winner (whoever that ends up being) is gonna be lucky to go 4-2 in the division... every single team in the division has a division loss already

Muhammad Ali is better a better boxer and more influential in the sport of boxing than Floyd. Federer has had 103 titles which far exceeds Serena. She dominates the woman’s game, but doesn’t make the list for me

Well there's basically only two "easy" games left on our schedule, and they're in the next two weeks.

Starting Thanksgiving weekends, its Browns twice, Steelers twice, Bengals, Rams, Packers. No easy games on that list. All are winnable. All are loseable.

That's why, as tempting it is to do so, I'm not clowning Bengals fans or......really anyone for that matter. We fuck around and drop a couple of games and we can quickly go from first to last. Beating the Dolphins is an absolute must. The Bears game is quite literally the only game we can "afford to lose."

As for the divisional games, we will be playing four of them in a 5-week stretch. BARE MINIMUM, we must two. Given how insanely competitive the AFC West is, we better off winning at least three.

Totally! If we have to lose, let's try and lose the the NFC teams and take care of our rivals

Yeah we have no right to clown anyone yet

you've got 2 golfers on your list - no reason not to have 2 of the most dominant athletes in tennis too - the 2 most decorated champions in the history of their sport - and just listing titles isnt that important... what matters is the majors:

serena's won 39 grand slams and 4 olympic golds...
she's the only person in the history of the sport male or female to do a career grand slam in both singles and doubles
she's only the 3rd player in history to hold all singles grand slam titles simultaneously on 2 separate occasions - something she also did separately in the doubles too

Federer had a period of unprecedented dominance between 2005-10 where he made every major final except 1 in that period
He's won 20 grand slams and an olympic gold - including winning wimbledon 5 years in a row
As you say he's won 103 titles which i think is 2nd most all-time

both of them go down as 2 of the individual greatest players of all-time and maybe the only 2 figures in the sport that transcended beyond their sport

Totally! If we have to lose, let's try and lose the the NFC teams and take care of our rivals

i mean i get it - but also let's not lose to the bears - let's beat the remaining bad team on our schedule - division's gonna be gruelling - let's not leave the division win down to tiebreakers lol

I know we already know this... but how lucky are we to have Tucker? I just watched that Santos 65 yard attempt again and it wasn't close even with the crow hop. Different conditions of course but really illustrates how lucky we are.

Federer better than Sampras, Lendl, Connors, Borg? unverifiable.
Williams better than Navratilova, Graff, unverifiable.
In the world of sports there are few unanimous, Ali, Jordan, but for each Ali there is a sugar robinson, for each Jordan there is a Chamberlain, and so with all sports, you have to enjoy more and compare less
