Next Up: @ Browns

Bowser is exactly what I thought he'd be... just took him a little longer to get there than I thought. I never saw him as a pure pass rusher but he was a perfect SLB with great coverage ability with some pass rush ability to go with it. Figured he'd settle into being a 6-8 sack a year guy while doing the dirty work that doesn't garner that much recognition.

Cherry picked descriptions but have you watched his film from Houston? Literally everyone on these boards, before we drafted him, were raving about his coverage ability. I recall hyping him up because of how many times he frustrated tf out of Lamar Jackson at Louisville.

the ravens didn’t take him to be a coverage backer, they took him to be a versatile weapon. Which he is.

Im glad he worked out as a versatile weapon but I just want a dominant pass rusher again. I miss the days of Suggs. I’m tired of seeing Watt wreck havoc on everyone that he lines up against in Pitt while we drop our rushers into coverage

Can we get back to having studs on every level on defense, please?

I have a feeling Oweh will be exactly what you’re looking for

That is very much how I remember the boards talking about him pre draft

traitsy prospect with good understanding and movement skills in coverage but a raw pass rusher with some potential physical limitations developmentally against the run...

that's a pretty good profile by lance zierlein on that one
I'm not a huge fan of Zierlein's profiles either, but it was pretty accurate.

If I recall. I believe on Ozzie's call he asked Bowser what he thought about playing SAM for the Ravens.

tbf that's what happens when you don't spend a 1st round pick on an edge or a DL for a decade+
if you look at the premier pass rushers in the league right now - the vast majority of them are 1st round picks...

got to invest if you want dominant guys - last time we drafted a R1 DT was 2006 with Ngata and last time we drafted a R1 EDGE (before Oweh in 2021) was 2003 with Suggs

Brandon Thorn has a ranking system he calls "true sack rate" and his last update was week 11:
FFO-vtvX0AIph7N

look at where the majority of those guys were drafted... if we want dominant pass rushers we've got to invest in them - Oweh looks like he might be on his way but we might need to invest more if we want more

like with many evaluators i agree and disagree - Zierlein at least clearly watches the tape and forms his own opinions - his grading/ranking system is a mess but his notes and evaluations (especially with OL) are normally pretty good - or at least i often agree with much of what he says with OL prospects

thats perfectly fair, i want the same, i just dont think taking bowser out of coverage is a net gain for our defense, hes on a different tier when it comes to dropping in coverage, i can just about guarantee that qbs are accounting for his presence at all times and always checks to see if he drops or rushes, hes that kind of threat.

speaking of edge rushers...
Oweh and Houston both high in double-team rates - Oweh lagging behind Houston in PRWR

apparently Bowser's 10th in pass rush productivity (which is also a per rush stat) but only seen someone write that not seen it myself anywhere meaningful

also worth pointing out that garrett and clowney are also looking pretty dominant in this chart

(and some might find it interesting to look at where judon and ngakoue are... hint: it's not in the top right quadrant)

That is not at all what he was saying. To some extent everyone tries to put a positive spin on the people we pick, but Bowser was an elite athlete no spin there at all
I didnt say bowser wasnt an elite athlete at all just said everyone we draft gets the “
Positive spin”

idk that that's true lol

not sure anyone span bronson kaufusi positively, lots of disappointment about correa, chris wormley likewise...

and just this year idk if anyone was into shaun wade lol (i know i wasnt)

but also why would we, as fans, not put a positive spin on our draft picks? why would we be rooting against them?

All I was saying is that the boards recognized that Bowser was an elite athlete and were excited to see what he could do. No one thought he was going to come in and be a huge sack guy coming off the edge. He was praised for his coverage ability. Some even suggested he play ILB as I recall lol

I wouldnt say root against them but atleast try to put the fandom to the side.. shaun wade was terrible idk why people acted like he was a steal. I knew he wasnt gonna make the team lol.

very few here thought he was a steal - most just rationalised that he made some sense as a day 3 pick given his athleticism

but don’t think you saw anyone calling him a steal here - most were pissed we passed on ardarius Washington again
