it was a calculated risk - they wanted to go all in for drew brees's last years and they knew that this would be an issue afterwards - obviously covid amplified that strategy more but they were always mortgaging the future to have a chance to "win now" while brees was still there
yes those final two years did them in, but understand why they did it. Long term effects will be felt hard.

matt rhule been quietly getting away with also not being good at what he does and being too "college" but went under the radar because he wasnt self-destructing in public like urban meyer

i think it would be a mistake to keep him on another year but he was david tepper's first hire and i imagine he'll want to let rhule see this through another year at least before canning him

Had a nice start to the season. They then played the 'Boys and haven't recovered since. Cam's downfall is tough to watch and Darnold.....well......yeah. Another team that needs a franchise QB.

and he gave him a 7 year contract

and he gave him a 7 year contract

this could have worked if he'd brought in an experienced GM to work with him rather than some puppet for Rhule
and Rhule could have given himself more help if he'd brought in someone with some NFL HC (or at least coordinating) experience

but in his arrogance he decided he knew everything so only brought in guys who'd worked for him before and there's basically no NFL experience in that building

this college authoritarian nonsense just puts you in poor spots in the NFL - the NFL is all about collaboration and team-work behind a collective vision and set of principles - you cant just have yes-men

like look at Kliff Kingsbury - in 2019 he came in and brought in Tom Clements long-time Packers coach and NFL offensive coach since 1997 to be his offensive coordinator and Vance Joseph as his DC and he kept on the existing special teams coordinator (and promoted him to assistant head coach) - he leant on experience, didn't let his ego get in the way and has let the personnel guys acquire talent for him (with his input of course) and look how successful they've been since he took over - Clements retired after the 2020 season but it's less important now because Kingsbury and the rest of that offensive staff have been in place together for a couple of years - and Kingsbury's been able to focus on offence because he doesnt need to micro-manage the defence or special teams because he's brought in guys with expertise who he can trust and delegate to on those units and in turn take advice and help from in his running of the team

Rhule and Meyer are going to be struck down by their own hubris and lack of self-awareness

You have to remember, the Panthers still had Marty Hurney as their GM when they hired Rhule so yes he was the puppet for Rhule until they hired Scott Fitterer from Seattle. With everything leaning toward Rhule being fired Monday or next week, it's likely Fitterer gets to choose his own Head Coach for 2022. Seems to me Matt Rhule wanted Darnold, and if Rhule had roster control given to him then it's likely Darnold was not Fitterer's QB choice either. From the looks of it, Scott is trying to build Carolina in the mold of Seattle, taking Jaycee Horn in the first round, trading for Gilmore, so how Carolina moves forward next year is going to be interesting.

where are you seeing that he's likely getting fired?
i hope he is because i dont think he deserves a 3rd year but ive seen nothing indicating he isnt going to be back

I read something that Owner David Tepper is embarrassed about the contract he gave Rhule and it does seem like buyers remorse. It just seems with the juggling of quarterbacks, firing Joe Brady, Tepper may just cut bait now rather cut him a year too late.

this is the paragraph that quote comes from:

Rhule was hired in Carolina in 2020 after overseeing quick turnarounds at Temple and Baylor, but sources say owner David Tepper is unhappy and embarrassed after the $16 billion hedge fund manager gave Rhule a seven-year, $62 million deal to outbid the New York Giants for his services. Tepper apparently plans to give Rhule a third year, with Rhule saying this week the owner had privately expressed “nothing but confidence about me and the future and moving forward.” But the three-month collapse after a 3-0 start has tested everyone’s patience, with one Panthers source characterizing the team’s regression in Rhule’s second season as “a clusterfuck.”

note also that the headline of the article suggests that rhule gets given another chance in year 3

This is exactly what Dan Snyder did when he bought the Redskins. He fired everyone in the administrative staff, so there was no football experience. He didn't want any connections to Jack Kent Cook in the building. He then hired people who had worked for him before.

Seems as if some Head Coaches are balking at interviews with the Jaguars due to GM Trent Baalke. Trent is also trying to push for former Texans Head Coach & Alabama OC Bill O'Brien to be the next Head Coach.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...nder-teams-ability-to-attract-top-candidates/

of course BOB was Penn States HC also;.

Giving him another chance at head coach after he blew up the Texans would be absolutely ridiculous
@rossihunter2 , the Jags deserve to be relegated if they hire BOB.

If the jags hire BOB then I’m fully convinced shaad khan is trying to sabotage the team to the point of the NFL granting a move to London

Reportedly AB was sitting out because he felt his ankle was not healthy and he wasn’t okay with playing, and he chose to sit out with an easily attainable million dollar bonus on the line, Arians told him on the sideline he’s gonna be cut if he doesn’t go back in.

if this is true, I’m with AB. Dude is a piece of shit but I think it’s deeper than that.

I wouldn’t be so quick to side with AB. He has been nothing but an ass pain for Arians this year. I’d guarantee much more has been going on that the organization kept in house. AB was lucky to even have a job with all his sexual assault allegations.
