Around the NFL: News and Rumors

There's a difference between fans wanting a better draft position and actively rigging matches. Going beyond the betting and match fixing side of it, it really fucks with the careers of many players and coaches. Careers in the NFL can be incredibly short, and a HC, GM or owner fucking over your image can cost you millions, and leave you out of the league.
Right but designing your team to not be competitive with others teams does same. It fucks with the careers of many players and coaches.

How is the career of David Culley looking right now? A HC that was hired to oversee a team that, extremely clearly, was NOT designed to compete with other NFL teams at a high level this year.

I'm just struggling to understand how fans are seemingly unbothered by management designing a team to not succeed, but are apparently appalled when there's monetary values associated with same. It's kind of just an extension of BountyGate. It didn't surprise anybody in the slightest that coaches were giving incentives to players to hurt other players, but when they actually physically see it, they pretend to be appalled by it.

The outcome is the same. The only difference is now you know how the sausage is made, and its uglier than you thought.

I do agree that Ross paying a coach to lose is bad, and he should probably be forced to sell for that. I also think its about the only important topic that's coming out of this whole process. I don't find really any of Flores other complaints to be overly egregious.

Which again goes back to my point of "what does Ross offering Flores $100K to lose have to do with racism in the NFL"? Answer... nothing. And that's why its not really about racism. It's about negative PR and a settlement demand.

don’t worry, the NFL will hire private firm to investigate themselves and find that they’re not guilty of any wrongdoing.
Well if a private firm says they're not guilty of anything, why would that be a problem?
Would that be any different if another firm hired another firm to do the investigation?

Or a better question... who's responsibility is that?

Same, I’ve turned down guys for the team that we’re stronger, faster, scored higher on prelims etc… sometimes the most qualified aren’t the right fit and that’s ok. Being a good dude goes a long way, for me atleast, and by all indications Flores was abrasive.

By the way what do you do for work? Just curious, no worries if you don’t feel like putting your business out on here.

I'm a consultant now, but I've been an Accounting Manager at many different companies over the years. It's not apples to apples to the NFL hiring process, of course, but point being is that "qualified" or "unqualified" is a) inherently subjective, and up to the hiring manager and b) some people link qualified vs unqualified to a paper resume, i.e. accomplishments in the industry, track record, etc. Those things are important, but they're not the only thing that's important. In most cases, if you're good enough to get an interview, you're qualified enough to get the job. It's just a question of how you stack up compared to others, personality, fit, etc.

that 2nd thread with the excerpts from the lawsuit is pretty damaging

the giants should have just paid the fine like the raiders did when they were hiring gruden - acknowledge that they knew who their guy was all along and pay the fine and no one would actually have had any real issue with it
I honestly have no problem with what the Giants did at all. Nobody can really attack them on their decision of who they hired (I'd rather hire Daboll than Flores, myself, in this situation, and it's not even close in my eyes really). The people that are saying "well why don't you just break the rule and pay the fine"... why should I? If the rule is designed in a way that forces me to interview candidates I'm not interested in, because I already know who I want to hire, then I think making a mockery of the rule is perfectly acceptable. It's not the Giants rule. Why should I have to pay a fine because I hired the person I wanted and who I think is the best person for the job, while not meeting some totally arbitrary standard of "I must interview people I'm not interested in". It's kind of laughable to me for people to suggest that they should just pay a fine to hire somebody they want to hire. That doesn't sound logical from a moral perspective to me.

Fix the rule. That's what this is about. It's about a bad rule that's not achieving anything it was designed to achieve, and now it's being abused by teams who know its a sham. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if the Giants simply didn't care that this happened and weren't upset to be called out for it. They didn't make the rule. Go talk to Goodell about it.

If you feel like minorities are not being represented enough in management positions, give Owners a reason to hire them. Comp draft picks was a great idea, and I think its working. If people's solution is "well lets just force the rich White guys to not be racist (which most of them clearly aren't)", good luck with that. You think they got to this point in their lives being worried about how they're viewed by the public? What's the worst thing you can do to them? Force them to sell a team they bought for millions and sell it for billions? O the horror!

These people are losing the morality argument year after year after year.

The Redwolves would've been insane when I saw this.

It's official... the Washington Commanders.

Hmmm . Those uniforms are ugly. Wish they went a little more traditional

It seems Goodell and Snyder have a bigger problem since now they are being seen as co-conspirators. The attorney for the former WFT employees released this statement:

8 NFL officials are retiring, and while normally I wouldn't post it, it's notable because Mr. Hip Check himself Tony Corrente is retiring. Damn what a offseason for the Steelers, lose Ben and now their favorite ref.

Curious to see how SF does in a Jimmy G trade.

I think it's somewhere between the Wentz and Darnold trade.
Wentz netted a 1st and 3rd. Of course, there were conditions on the 1st, it could have been a 2nd.

Darnold went for a 2nd, 4th and 6th.

Why does this reek like NFL trying to do damage control. NFL probably called up McNair and told him “Texans probably gonna suck anyways, do us this solid and we’ll remember it.”

imagine the PR backlash if no NFL team hires a black HC this cycle and one of the position goes to McCown.

I mean I think its been pretty clear for a long time now that the NFL only sort of "fake cares" about PR. The only thing they care about, and probably should care about, it $.

So the NFL will probably start caring about this when revenue declines because the public is outraged about them being supposedly racist. This "problem" is decades old, and I haven't seen that revenue decline yet...

Not only are the fans unwilling to turn the TVs off for this, but the NFL also seemingly doesn't have to worry about any Corporate sponsor pushback, considering many of the large Corporations that sponsor the NFL have similar (or worse) diversity problems.

Carson Palmer was on the Pat McAfee show talking about how the Bengals would practice. He said the team was caught making hot chocolate in mop buckets.

The NFL has announced the addition of more games going across the sea, Mexico will see their return as well this season.
