what do you think shadowing means when the receiver flexes into the slot if not "playing snaps in the slot by design"?
Well when the number 1 is on the outside over 80% of snaps (such as AJ Brown who was cited in this conversation) and you only follow him when he does that then on 80+% of your snaps you are on the outside which would, following this train of logic, mean that Fuller would be the slot corner for the majority of the plays which is exactly what I posited would happen yesterday.
which ignores the fact that marlon rarely shadows 1 receiver for a whole game
he gets flexed around vs all sorts of weapons depending on down and distance, offensive personnel, defensive personnel, offensive scheme, defensive play-call etc...
just look at the raiders game last year - marlon spent the majority of money downs in the slot either matched up vs renfrow or waller depending on the playcall
or look at the whole of 2020...
what makes marlon special is that he's a gifted man-cover corner both inside and outside with both the athleticism and physicality to matchup against basically anyone out of any alignment
he isn't on the outside over 80% of the time. He's on the outside 73% of the time. Not to be specific, but I'm only going by what you deem to be an inside or outside WR.

Just out of curiosity... where did the 80% come from? Is that just arbitrary?
Mostly asking because the NFL would identify your position based on where you play 50.1% of the snaps, not 80% of the snaps.

Define "very rare"? Like Jalen Ramsey playing in the slot isn't a "very rare" thing. It happens a lot actually. About 1 out of every 3 snaps in recent years. I don't think you can make a case that's "rare".

I mean technically you're supporting his argument. His argument is Marlon is NOT a slot corner, primarily because he makes too much money to be a slot corner (which isn't true, but he hasn't figured that out yet).
So the fact that Marlon doesn't play 80% slot snaps emphasizes his point.
Or nah.
Dude has been arguing that Marlon shouldn't be in the slot because we pay him $20M and guys that make that much don't play the slot. He's ignored every single argument that says he plays there based on matchups. No one once said he was a pure slot CB.

Don't disagree. Money has nothing to do with where he plays in the formation. If the Ravens had drafted somebody like Stingley or especially Sauce Gardner, they'd have no reservations whatsoever about drafting either guy OR moving Marlon primarily into the slot, because the team would be exponentially better for it.
They prefer Marlon outside because he's better there and basically, yes, generally, many of your premier WRs play outside more often than inside.
i agree with the first bit, but regarding that last line, everything we've seen and heard about the team since 2020 is that they want to be able to move marlon inside as much as they can to use him there - i dont think they think he's necessarily "better" outside
This. They recognize how rare it is to have a guy of Marlon's size that can win those matchups inside. It's arguably a harder position than the outside nowadays. Even after Peters went down, there were plenty of times where Averett and Westry/insert CB here manned the outside while Marlon moved inside. They just want him around the ball more.
he only brought up the "Adreme 80% rule" after saying he shouldn't play from the snap. So 80% or not, this wasn't part of the initial argument @rmcjacket23
also completely anecdotal because i dont have the full season numbers
but ive just watched 3 whole games from the 2020 season and Marlon played almost exclusively in the slot lol - so this 80% number is meaningless... only snaps he played outside in those 3 games were when we only had 2 corners on the field lol
so call marlon a slot corner if you want... id love the full-season snap breakdown of where he aligned for the whole season
sidenote: having watched all that all-22 over the last couple of hours, it's exciting watching just how smooth he and MP are in coverage, was surprised by how much zone we played in 2020, lots of plays where safeties were slow to break or were just a tick slow to the catch-point... think kyle hamilton and marcus williams are gonna feast behind MP and marlon or alternatively MP's confidence in those guys getting to the ball is going to allow him to be more aggressive with his coverage baits
I certainly don't care whether he is in the slot or on the boundary. I just want our best players on the field and Humphrey taking out our opposing weapons, whomever that may be.
We haven't had a very good safety behind Marlon Humphrey since Earl Thomas played free safety in 2019 and now we have both Hamilton and Williams. This will only help him.

I'm too much of an animal lover and softee to appreciate hunting. However, I don't like to judge and to each his own, as long as they don't do it just for sport and consume what they hunt.
