The 2023 Offseason Thread

And if he turns into a success, start a rumour that Steve forced the hire on him. Did you not receive your anti-harbs playbook in the mail?
I'm shocked Harbaugh hasn't hired TD Jakes or Billy Graham son as a consultant for the team honestly if this the route we going.

Wait, but who's our #1? Bateman isn't the possession #1 we need. He's like a slightly worse Jacoby Jones. We need an Anquan Boldin, but one that's a rookie.
Dude, what? First of all, #1WR isn’t a “possession” receiver, a #1 is a wr who can be the primary focus of the defenses attention and STILL produce. Bateman is the only ravens wr capable of this since Steve smith days. It’s just so weird to me how we win a super bowl with boldin and he just becomes the template for what every ravens fan looks for in a receiver for all of eternity. It was ten years ago, boldin is a future hall of famer, and receivers who run slower than the average TE yet still dominate are extremely rare, and frankly going after receivers who struggle to separate is a great way to fail at finding a receiver, you go out looking for anquan boldin in every receiver you go after and you just end up with a bunch of slow receivers who can’t separate and they all suck.

Well Bateman hasn't caught a mile high miracle. But he has caught a longer TD pass. Don't get me wrong, I like Bateman, and I may look back and say I was really dumb at this moment. But even so, he is not a WR1, him being WR1 would work less well than Torrey being WR1. Yes, he caught for over 1k yards, but the offense was really forced. I want him as our deep threat, not out WR1
Torrey smith is nowhere near what Bateman can be. The difference in the two is that Bateman is far better in every conceivable way except for health in his first 2 years, that’s it. And Bateman isn’t a “deep threat”, he is a full route tree type of receiver who also has deep speed. Big difference.

You need some film reviews my dude.

I'm assuming it'll be the Seahawks guy who got the 2nd interview.

Apparently, when he was a college player he used to drive 100s of miles after games to "lead the worship" at his church. Harbaugh will eat that up - he seems more passionate about religion than about football these days.
When harbaughs days are done here, I’m demanding a Jefferson’s wall to separate church and team forever

You could reasonably say he hasn't earned the title of WR1 because of injuries derailing seasons. However, Jacoby was at best a solid deep threat WR3. He was no WR1.

If Bateman can stay healthy (I can't promise you that) he'll show he can be a WR1.
We'll see. That could happen. I don't believe that it can't. So let him show me next season.

Torrey Smith is the best receiver the Ravens have ever drafted. Shut up insulting him. I'll see what happens with Bateman, but for the time being that's my opinion.

So basically what you saying is Harbaugh will hire Dave Canales solely on his religious belief and nothing else ?
Do we need to straw man everything?

I was half-jokingly talking about how much more openly religious Harbaugh has become lately but also saying that I genuinely believe it will help Canales in the interview process. Harbaugh will think it demonstrates that Canales is a good person, a good leader and person of good character.

OK, but that's also irrelevant. Him being the best we ever drafted just means the franchise hasn't been good at drafting WRs, not that Torrey was good.
For the record... Hollywood's career will be better than Torrey's when its over. Torrey basically played six years in the league as a starting caliber WR. The last three years he wasn't. Guy was basically forced into retirement at 30.

I appreciate the way a lot of these guys plays as Ravens and were integral to a Lombardi, but some of you guys have massive revisionist history about the actual contributions these players made, both as Ravens and as long term NFL players.

I think it's Hollywood so far, but I'm hoping Bateman and whoever we draft this year can pass him.

I don't think any team would ever have given up a first for Torrey. Ravens fans sometimes tend to give too much credit to players who happened to be there for the Super Bowl.

That's fair.
Of course I've destroyed the fanbase for years over its hypocrisy on this topic. Ray Lewis treated like a God (literally) around Baltimore, despite the fact that he couldn't shovel religion down people's throats fast enough and also was at least heavily involved in a murder.

Not to mention the gigantic number of people who took the moral high ground against Steve when he didn't immediately cut Ray Rice, and now all of the sudden have an issue with the franchise instilling arbitrary character requirements on its players and coaches.

The general public looks like a bunch of moronic tools with all this "we need less choir boys" shit. As usual the public's "holier than thou" mentality is selectively enforced, based on how it benefits them in the moment.

Where did that rumor come from? It's repeated so many times that it has become true for most Ravens fans. I've seen them confidently saying exactly who it was that Harbaugh wanted to hire at the time, but does anyone know how it got started?

Was there ever a reported rumor to that effect, or is it just a fan theory that has grown legs because Kubiak, by being good at the job, is so clearly the outlier among Harbaugh's OC hires?

Hollywood was better than Torrey
Bateman is better than Torrey

I love torrey but it's not an insult to say these 2 guys are better lol
Honestly the reason I say this isn't because I believe Torrey is more skilled, just he's had a better career to this point. I can't say no when you tell me that Hollywood has more talent, but his career isn't done yet. Bateman I don't know. Hope he has a good non-injury year next year

You’re right in all this, ray lewis had no say in coach hirings or roster moves though so harbs obsession with faith is a much bigger conflict of interest than rays.

we found out in 2013 that he's not even a WR 2 and barely a WR 3, that year the path was cleared for him to be WR2 on the roster and he got beaten out, out-produced and out-snapped by a udfa rookie who didnt even make it beyond year 3 in the NFL

bateman has already shown he's a better receiver than jacoby by miles, no offence to torrey smith, but in talent, Bateman is clearly the 2nd best WR we've drafted already and has a real chance to be the best if he can stay healthy
We’ve gone full off season already arguing about the value of Jacoby Jones. i will say this
1. Worst ravens tattoo of all time , looks like a 12 year old did his back
2. Was a good WR3 when Torrey and Boldin took all the focus
3. I do miss is random explosive punt/kick returns

so what you're telling me is, by that logic...
torrey smith has had a better career than jamarr chase simply because he's retired and his career is over
