The Defence, The Passing Game and Closing it Out @ the Bengals

Even though lamar over throws, the ball placement on those over throws would have been perfect on if they had connected
He's accurate - I just wish Lamar would get some more air under his deep balls, rather than firing them in so fast and flat. It's one of the only things he still has to work on.

They don't need to be perfect, he just needs to give the receivers enough time to make the catches when they get behind the defense, so it seems like it should be a relatively easy thing to fix.

Man this was a really good Sunday. We didn’t just win, we beat a division rival, in their stadium, the 2x afcn champs, with 5 of our absolute most crucial starters out, and we fucking looked good doing it
Love to see it

haha

at least we got the win so we can laugh about it lol

Act like you've been there before Geno lol

I'm was confused watching live and after all his teammates roasted him still don't get what he saw for him to run out of bounds. Great play but would've been a season highlight with points.
We've been really good at finding/developing late round safeties the past few years.

Also interesting that all the talk is about what's wrong with Burrow and not what we did but I prefer it this way.

that's a great play
but not what i was talking about - hollywood never made catches in traffic like the zay one - he would make difficult or even acrobatic catches but not with defenders around him

he was a great route runner, awesome vs press coverage off the release, and almost impossible to defend on posts and comebacks - but he wasnt splitting a bracket and going up to high-point a ball in traffic - that was one of his weaknesses (played small at the catch-point when contested)
oh yes, that is correct, he rarely ever made any catches in traffic. Maybe the 2019 catch at the end of the game vs Arizona.

Bengals really mishandled the Burrow situation if he wasn't 100% game 1.
I think its a tough one. Calf injuries are brutal to deal with. He could easily need 2, 3 or 4 months of rest and rehab to be 100%, and there's no way the Bengals can afford to have him sit for a month or two during the season and still achieve their goals.

I think people forget that, while the Bengals have excelled in the playoffs the last two years, this is basically a 10-7 team with Burrow out there each week. They're not this like 14-15 win team who shits on everybody when he's in the lineup.

So him playing at 80% may be what they need to be this year. And if it doesn't work out, he'll have 7-8 months to prepare for next year.

I'm so optimistic or the season after this game. We have a real NFL passing game and we can still run with power. The defense is great and we have 6 of our better starters (costing a huge % of cap) due to return.

I was hoping, after Week 1, that Monken had run a vanilla pre-season version of the offense, but I was slightly worried that he hadn't. This week showed that he held about 80% of the offense back vs Houston. They really did treat it like an extension of the pre-season.

Even when he initially hurt himself I thought it would be wise to lose him early than risk it lingering. Historically they struggle with these teams anyway so his health was more important than early wins to me.

I had completely forgot Orlando Brown signed with the Bengals. I’m sure the mentioned it on the broadcast , but I was watching without sound. How did he hold up? Best OL for Cinci?
Hard to tell overall. Bengals deployed a quick hitter offense for a majority of the game.

As a side note, was happy with the pass rush when they got their opportunities. Felt like there was pressure on most of Burrow’s deeper drops.

Good morning america or whatever it’s called on NFLN is giving us props, and Lamar too. They’re wondering why and how no other team made an offer this off season. You love to see it, let’s do it all year. Super bowl

Right I'm just saying I think the only way they could really reduce the risk of re-injury to zero is to hold him out until at least October. In this conference and this division, I don't think Cincy can afford to effectively punt 4-6 games and still make the playoffs.

I understand they struggled early last year too, but "struggled" was 2-2 in September and 4-4 after October. They're not going 2-2 without Burrow, or 4-4 without Burrow. Their schedule is also significantly tougher this year.

it's the fact that, while the score was close, it really wasnt ultimately a close game (didnt stop me being brutally anxious the whole 4th quarter)

that 3 and out before the bengals last TD helped make things closer, and obviously the missed FG and the punt return TD made a huge difference too

it's really cool that this is a team right now that doesnt need injuries as an excuse but can overcome injuries at key positions to still dominate

even with Andrews playing - we were missing 3 of the top 6 cap hits on the team + Dobbins + Linderbaum

and yet their backups played really well - Mekari was exceptional in pass pro, Mustipher held up well vs Reader, Brandon Stephens had JaMarr Chase clamped all game, Gus and Justice made it look like we never needed JK in the first place, Geno made a pick that looked exactly like MW and dont forget Agholor coming in for Odell when he went out too...
it only felt close because of what we went through

weird observation on my part but for years we have been anxious about the D cordinator not shutting teams out.
Who would have thought the answer to our problems was actually our OFFENSIVE cord calling pass players instead of run an punt
