Lamar Jackson

I don’t understand the focus on the MVP thing, couldn’t care less. What I want to see are some playoff wins, hopefully a SB appearance and SB MVP for Lamar. The rest of it is just meaningless window dressing.
It is for sure but the idea of Purdy being mvp when he’s not even the 7th best player on his own team is laughable , and 8th may be generous. Give it to Hill

Going to move these tweets here for the discussion on this in the Lamar thread. While we are all glad it worked out for us, Lamar is making a lot of teams look stupid for not trying to go after him. Russell Wilson was worth two firsts, Watson was worth three firsts, which Atlanta had no problem giving up three firsts for him but not two firsts for Lamar? Carolina gave up two firsts for an unproven QB in Bryce Young.

It’s wild that no one even tried, but almost all attributed to the lack of agent in this case. Teams had a very short window to try to make something happen and negotiating directly with the guy is no easy task. Still a major fault there in not trying at least. Worked out very well for us.

Rich's second point is the biggest thing.

I saw a tweet from an insider during the season that said the Falcons had interest, but they essentially had a what's the point attitude.

They felt like they could offer Lamar a contract, but the Ravens would 100% match it. There was never a world in which a team offered a contract and the Ravens *didn't* match. They were always going to.

Teams felt like they didn't want to do the Ravens dirty work of negotiating to ultimately come up empty handed.

People are forgetting a lot of the context. Bryce Young they gave up picks because they get 5 years of cheap QB play so if he is good you have a nice sized window where you can spend on FAs to make up for the picks. That benefit is lost when you immediately pay someone.

Then there is the fact the moment the other deals happened Lamar’s happened almost immediately. I doubt EDC was hesitant to offer the deal that everyone knew it was going to be on day 1. Considering the reports about Lamar wanting to beat Watson’s guarantees, nobody was going to touch that.

The entire reason the NFL passed is because no one was willing to repeat the Watson contract and so therefore any deal they make the Ravens match and trading 3+ 1s and signing a big extension tends to not work out anyway.

Indeed. I believe Schefter also alluded to the same thing as well. It's why I was never worried about him leaving. Biscotti and co. would've been fools to let him walk out the door. I'm so glad they waited until the Hurts deal to finally get something done.

Watson's deal was such an anomaly. If Hurts, Burrow, and Herbert couldn't get fully gtd. deals, there was absolutely no way Lamar was getting from the Ravens, let alone other teams.

Oh absolutely. There's certainly a lot of missing context out there in the wild currently, but hard to disagree that teams just straight up not reaching out (even if it was a very quick rebuttal) is borderline malpractice. Can fully understand a team with a true starting option not wanting to ruffle any feathers for an unlikely possibility, but there's no cost for a team searching for an answer at least reaching out to try to have a conversation.

the fact that the falcons owner just came out and said no is outrageous
to not even try is absurd

fine by me though

If Lamar were offered a fully guaranteed deal by a team, I believe the Ravens match that. I truly believe the reason they didn't offer it is because 1. They didn't want it to be precedent and 2. They didn't think another team would. However, if a team had and that became Lamar's market value, I do believe they match it.

But the idea that teams just outright didn't want him is dumb and more than likely false. Almost every team in the NFL, barring a few, would want Lamar, but he wasn't truly ever available.

I mean they already know they are going to have to offer more than 2 1s and pay a record deal, and it would have to be a record deal that the Ravens would not be willing to pay so likely record by far more than it was, and the thing I forgot about is that Lamar had just come off back to back seasons where he did not finish the season so there is also injury concerns.

Atlanta figuring they are not a QB away makes sense. Basically the only team you could argue should have done it was the Jets but that OLine would not have been able to protect Lamar so basically they would almost certainly be exactly where they are. I can also see them preferring Rodgers for 30m over Lamar for 50m with all that.

I mean yeah we can get into all of the nitty gritty but there were ~10-12 teams looking for a new QB this offseason. Of course some are going to prefer rookies, some are going to prefer bridges, etc., but it's still malpractice to not call and see what it would take. Chances are slim it works out but QBs like Lamar aren't "available" all the time. A phone call doesn't hurt any of those teams that were looking.

Totally. It's not like Lamar doesn't have a phone. I do believe the full guarantees was the big issue but still just to come out and say that blew my mind and yet Watson was a glimmer in their eye. Unbelievable.

Besides that Flacco>Watson.

To be fair, maybe Atlanta felt like they dodged a bullet with Watson and was worried Lamar would be similar. They probably also didn’t think there was any chance at Lamar and probably didn’t want to waste their time with trying to entertain it because that would be time they would lose elsewhere.

I think it's 100% the last statement. I do believe if Dan Snyder was still in charge of the Commanders and he wasn't selling the team, I do think he would have made a push to sign him.

The reasons cited by Arthur Blank were entirely different. He believed Lamar was injury prone and may not be a viable long-term option as QB1 for them. Very short-sighted.

Look how much of an Iron Man Watson has been.

These guys think we are stupid. That's what it is
