I think he was waiting for the stadium operators to show a better angle, but decided to go for it when said angle never made it to the screen. I can at least see why he threw that flag.

On that note, I wonder how much something like that plays into the "home cooking" factor (and whether a better angle would be shown faster had it been the Vikings looking at challenging).
