General Draft Thoughts

Well now I know how the board feels about Swift lol

idk that WR would be a luxury - i just want the BPA at this point (as long as it's not linebacker or RB or TE)

if that's DL or Edge then great, if it's McKinney at safety then tbh let's go, if it's WR then great, it it's OL then even better (albeit im starting to doubt that would be BPA at 28 now even as much as i love Ruiz), wouldn't love it if it's a corner (and i imagine if it was then EDC would do everything possible to trade out of the pick) but ultimately would get behind it if the player was that high on the board (someone like CJ Henderson having a crazy fall to 28 or something)

would absolutely love to add a 1st round talent to our defensive front somewhere though - Davidson would be great but I'd love it also to add a 3tech like Madubuike too or obviously an edge

with regards to how we'd use that talent - i dont think Wink would stop blitzing either even as the talent increases - we'd see a lot more sacks though from those blitzes as those guys take advantage of more favourable matchups (like Judon has - with his ability to rush well within a blitz package which isnt quite the same skill as pure edge rushing)

we're still going to attack offences because we want them to make quick decisions that allow our great DBs to make plays/to force throws into our secondary when we're dictating where those throws should go - adding talent just makes the likelihood of a sack higher (Derek Wolfe has shown a nice ability to free up guys around him on deceptive rushes (stunts etc.) too which gives guys more free runs to the QB)
Just to state something obvious; our secondary is unbelievable. I've really taken notice of just how good they are of late. Im of the opinion that we can't come out of the draft without tangibly affecting the pass rush/run defense. It would be a small tragedy to not upgrade both the rush and the run d. or to make it an absolute priority. Im not convinced altogether about either and this defense COULD be shutdown with a defense centered draft. It could be what Wolfe is saying but not as presently constituted.

Big fan if he’s there at 60. Both him and CEH at 60, it would take a pretty big fall from some really unexpected prospect to knock those guys out of the running for BPA,
boy,..if Ruiz is our pick at 28 it might just be criminal not to to take Taylor at 55. ( all this after railing on the importance of a defense centered draft)

Yeah, it would feel like a major regression in philosophy too when we were doing so well in getting with the times. Swift would feel a bit like 2012 when we took upshaw

it's also a question of how much more efficient can this rushing offence really get and does the value he offers potentially in the passing game trump the value we'd get from a passing game specialised position like WR

and ingram is a good 3rd down back too

our offence did something historic last year - literally historic - expecting to exceed that or even repeat it is entirely unrealistic and chasing it will only put our offence in a bad spot philosophically moving forwards in its development

yes swift would be a weapon - but would he be a better weapon than a receiver or an OL?

IF we pick at 28 its gonna IOL or Front 7. I just dont see us going WR unless we trade up for one. Value wont be there at 28. It just depends how the board falls but I highly suspect well be looking to trade up with all the ammo we have. This is a strange draft, I cant remember the last time weve had so many day 2 picks

i agree with that for sure - ive been advocating for adding pieces on the DL/EDGE since the beginning but the trick is going be finding the value of where to pick those guys so it's not a reach for need (because that's how you end up missing)

I think the most exciting 1st round picks we could make would be at that position too

but its important i think not to lose sight of just how bare our receiving corps is outside of Hollywood and Andrews... we have snead who's solid but not a huge contributor or threat and we've got boykin who could develop for sure but we cant rely on to take that step

finding another receiver somehow is probably just as key as finding more upfront on both lines

Hows everyone on Jonathan Taylor?

i like him a lot - a couple of things that worry me: how many carries he's had - if you get him on a 4 year rookie deal it has to be with the expectation that that is all you're getting out of him (like with most RBs) which makes a high pick hard to swallow but he's an awesome runner

and the other thing is him putting the ball on the ground at a pretty high rate which given the way lamar holds the ball in the mesh point gives me pause for sure

ive posted about this a couple of times but we've only once ever had this many picks in the first 3 rounds: 2008 (but that was 3 3rd round picks not 2 2nds and 2 3rds)

the last time we had this many picks in round 2 or higher was 2005 - and only happened 2 other times in franchise history before that (1997 and 1996

so to say it's been a while would be an understatement...

its hard to find a WR who will be BPA in round 2, and it's tough to leave it to round 3 to get one so it may well be that we have to use some ammo to get that 55th pick up higher in the 2nd round

I think a defense centered draft is an overrated concept at this point. I like the idea more of making our team impossible to beat, I know that’s not achievable, but our defense works, it has warts but it works, and it doesn’t need great talent up front to work, keep the secondary intact and keep the scheme going, it will still be a quality defense.

now if you add an elite OL to this unit, how much closer to indefensible do we get? Like you said, Ruiz and Taylor, with the defense we had last year, if we had Ruiz and Taylor instead of mekari and a very banged up Ingram, who’s to say the titans even stand a chance?

Taking a high end rb would work because eventually Ingram will get hurt, as we saw. But at 28? Fuck out my face with that lol

but im not spending a day 1 or high day 2 pick on a player im expecting to be a backup all year unless someone goes down to injury...

Doing a TDN mock and have been presented with this option many times and I never know...

Round 3, pick 106, amik robertson or Alex highsmith, mind you I went epenesa, Malik Harrison, Robert Hunt for my first 3 which has been extremely cookie cutter and what I lean towards most mocks...
