Around the NFL: News and Rumors

Looks like Demaryius Thomas has died at 33.

Out of NOWHERE

He was about to turn 34 on Christmas Day, so young. Will always remember him for that OT play in Denver against the Steelers. Tebow to Thomas to send the Steelers home in the playoffs.

i want to say this is unbelievable but this is exactly what i expected from Meyer and exactly what we could see going on in the offseason...

he's not a good coach, and he's definitely not an NFL coach - doesnt treat these adults like adults

and it's a general trend for a lot of these coaches who come straight from college gigs to NFL head coach roles that they just dont get the professional environment straight away - dont treat the players like professionals or adults...

Kliff Kingsbury has done well to transition that way but i think that's just his personality to be more "relaxed"

Meyer, Rhule both struggling to get buy in and also to hold themselves accountable

Pete Carroll probably the longest term success from college to NFL direct pipeline and even he had some culture issues early on after some of their awesome draft classes started needing to be paid - jim harbaugh was also pretty successful straight out the gate too but also got ousted

the same happened with chip kelly

seems to me that the guys who seem to succeed coming out of college are the more relaxed, emotionally intelligent coaches and not the rah rah "i know best" dictatorial types

Pete Carroll had NFL experience as the head coach of the Jets and Patriots before going to USC, so I'm not sure he is a good example. Steve Spurrier is definitely someone that never should have been an NFL coach. He preferred playing golf than coaching.

Your first sentence is exactly how I feel about Meyer. I mean.......if they lose out, which is entirely possible, I just don't see him staying but then again I don't know his contract.

Even though he isn't a HC who came straight from the college ranks, Joe Judge ain't shit. He's done nothing to show progression but I guess they're handcuffed because of who they have at QB.

As for Jim Harbaugh, I thought he was gone because Jed York got in his feelings after those continued to butt heads.

It still surprises me not a single Head Coach has been fired yet. I mean sure two offensive coordinators got fired and Gruden "resigned." I could see Jacksonville firing Urban Monday after losing to the Titans to get a head start on their next coach.

Maybe Fangio gets fired, Joe Judge, Nagy, with Pete Carroll being a surprise firing. Hearing rumors the front office in Seattle is not happy.

i think it's less about Meyer's contract and more about the fact that shahid khan is really loyal and has been trying to get meyer for multiple years so it might make him too stubborn to change anything...

joe judge is also in that "rah rah" mould of coaches so it doesnt surprise me (although he at least seems to treat his players like adults - similar vibes with joe judge and dan campbell)

I can see Jim Harbaugh being on the radar this year given what he's done with Michigan but 2023 I can see him back in the NFL.

apparently teams are allowed to start interviewing coordinators and other candidates (with permission from their teams) from week 17 onwards now due to a rule change as long as they've got a vacancy (or they've given their existing HC notice that they will not be continuing)

with that stipulation it would suggest that if teams want to start replacing guys that they'd get a legitimate head start from making that decision before week 17

i mean harbaugh's finally got something going at michigan - he's not gonna spend all these years building this team and then instantly disappearing lol

idk how any pro would go to jacksonville by choice at this point if urban's still there

Jacksonville is a great example of why....

1) The NFL should consider a Draft Lottery
2) Nobody should complain if a player refuses to play for a team AKA... Pull an Eli.

i mean you could have a draft lottery but then your best avenue for teams improving is greatly reduced if your aim is parity and it's rare that teams actually try to tank (especially coaching staffs and players) on purpose - their jobs are on the line

and a player could refuse to play for a team but what would be the point - if the team or organisation sucks then you likely just get a different coaching staff soon anyway - and there's very few teams in the NFL where you could justify not going to them on an organisational basis - like no player is rejecting the jags because of urban before he's even coached a game - but you might not want to go to the jets or lions as a QB (or 4 years ago the browns)

but the browns are a case in point that you can turn an organisation around very quickly with a plan in the front office, and a decent QB

Nothing inspires subordinates like a good belittling. That’s just leadership 101 right there
