Around the NFL: News and Rumors

Jason Garrett still hanging in there, my prediction that they would keep him as their HC is still pending....lol.
You'd have to think that the longer the decision is still up in the air the more likely it is he stays on. And the harder the rest of the league laughs at them.

PAUL DEPODESTAG, CLEVELAND BROWNS

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Browns "chief strategy officer" Paul DePodesta is in charge of hiring the team's new coach.
DePodesta will not get a title change in the hierarchy of the Browns' front office, but he's serving as the active GM at the moment and could even possibly take over the role moving forward depending on how things shake out. DePodesta is essentially a throwback to the Sashi Brown era after he survived the Brown ouster and now the John Dorsey debacle. DePodesta's background is in baseball with an analytical view.

    BUD DUPREELB, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Coach Mike Tomlin said re-signing impending free agent OLB Bud Dupree is a priority this offseason.
Dupree had a major breakout in his contract year, recording 11.5 sacks after totaling 11.5 combined the previous two seasons. Dubbed a bust as the former No. 22 overall pick in 2015, Dupree made himself some serious cash with his breakout year. It'll be interesting to see if he can build off it once getting paid. Tomlin suggested the franchise tag is in play for Dupree.

  • KEVIN O'CONNELLC, WASHINGTON REDSKINS

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports new Redskins coach Ron Rivera will interview in-house OC Kevin O'Connell for the same job on his staff.
Per RapSheet, Rivera was impressed with O'Connell's work with first-round rookie Dwayne Haskins over the second half of the season and will give him a shot to stick around. Ultimately, it would be a surprise if O'Connell is trusted to run the offensive side of the show for the defensive-minded Rivera, but it's not crazy by any means. Norv Turner was Rivera's right-hand man in Carolina.

  • JACK DEL RIOC, WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Redskins hired ex-Raiders coach Jack Del Rio as defensive coordinator.
Del Rio spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons out of the league after he was fired following a three-year run as the Raiders' coach. He and Rivera have never coached together, and Rivers was reportedly eyeing Browns DC Steve Wilks first, but eventually moved to Del Rio. Rivera and Del Rio are a pair of strong voices and leaders to help try and pull the Redskins out of the current mess they've been in for years. It's unclear if the Skins will employ a man or zone scheme.

  • MIKE MCCARTHYC, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns are considering pairing ex-Packers coach Mike McCarthy with assistant GM Eliot Wolf.
Ron Wolf's son, Eliot overlapped with McCarthy for 12 years in Green Bay. Wolf arrived in Cleveland in 2018. Understandably, the Browns are said to be prioritizing a unified coaching/front office front, but that has always been easier said than done under scatterbrained owner Jimmy Haslam.

Still no word in Dallas on the Jason Garrett front. Apparently there will be more discussions tomorrow, so not sure what's left at this point but Cowboys are going to fall behind in the coaching search if they keep waiting.

especially given how much jerrah likes to "win" the head coach search - got to be a big name candidate which gets less and less likely the longer he waits

We definitely got the better end of those Kentucky draft picks.

cant remember if it was on here or on twitter - but someone made a good point that ZDS has become what everyone expected Jadeveon Clowney to be - big, powerful, violent and explosive rushing from all points on the defensive line - he's a legit all-pro this year in a golden period for edge rushing talent around the league

Been a game changer all season. He's had a few where you can say he's the reason they won. His play this season is almost as shocking to me as Lamar's. Proud to see how far he's come. I think DeCosta sees that and is worried to let Judon walk and a similar situation happens.

But to be fair, I don't think we had the cap space to fight off bids for his (ZDS) services.
