Around the NFL: News and Rumors

Everyone besides the Jags saw this as fail, before Urban Meyer was signed. Seriously, even if it was a success he would be with the team for 2 to 3 years tops.

I didn’t have a lot of faith in Urban but I assumed they would be ok with Trevor Lawrence. Poor kid has fallen off a cliff down there.

a lot of the issues he had in college are showing up - which is not unexpected as a rookie

people were talking about him pre-draft as some sort of generational talent and cleanest prospect ever... but i didnt see that at all - i saw a really good college QB who had a chance to be an even better pro but had some clear vulnerabilities that he'd need to improve especially when throwing over the middle of the field

he wasnt even the top QB in this class based on my grades (Justin Fields edge him out on my board) - both of them really need some better coaching in 2022 though

but neither of them were even close to the grade I had on Joe Burrow who's only real downside as a prospect was that he was only a 1 year starter... but was otherwise one of the best nfl prospects I've watched at any position

I literally never understood why anybody would think Meyer could be a good NFL coach. Like if they had even a vague understanding of how he ran practices and what he did in College, they'd realize in 10 seconds that it doesn't work on players who are getting paid equal or more than the coach is.

and also the fact that even in college he got sent packing in 2 separate consecutive head coaching jobs...

especially telling is the stuff that happened at florida

Sure NFL.... mandate a booster when vaccinated players are the ones testing positive.

i mean do we know that everyone who's got it has been vaccinated?

but also given how the proportion of players that are vaccinated it's statistically far more likely that more positives would come from the larger pool of players that are vaccinated than unvaccinated (given that most teams are around 90%+ vaccinated at this point)

but also the booster mandate is only for the same personnel that they mandated get the vaccine initially so nothing's really changed here in terms of their processes - many of those staff will have got the first jabs a fair while ago so would probably be due a booster even without omicron being around

in the UK we'd started booster jabs a couple of months ago, long before omicron was found

but also just generally the premise of your complaint is deliberately missing the point - the same point you seem to make every time this comes up - the vaccine doesnt stop you from getting covid - it makes it less likely you'll get it while simultaneously making sure that if you do get it, you have better outcomes than if unvaccinated (i.e. less severe symptoms, lower risk of hospitalisation, lower risk of death - it's worth pointing out that all over the world the vast majority of hospitalisations right now are unvaccinated) - but the other benefit of the vaccine is that it means you shed less which makes it far less likely that you'll spread it to those around you as well

exactly and to think Khan has been trying to get him for several years.

Good call. I didn’t have alot of faith in Fields but he looks pretty decent so far. Everyone kept saying Lawrence was the next Andrew luck so I went right along with it. I imagine being on a team with some real talent and a decent coaching staff would improve his play.

yeah and to be clear - im not saying he's a scrub or anything and he was a perfectly legitimate selection at number 1 overall (albeit i personally would have taken fields) - but the idea that he was this flawless andrew luck prospect was patently ridiculous...

lawrence ran a super simple offence with lots of quick and short stuff and lots of stuff outside the numbers - so much of his stuff was quick stuff to the perimeter and lots of first read

he also really struggled with pressure and simulated pressure (not uncommon in rookies at all but he seemed to struggle more than the other 4 main guys with it)

didnt always throw with necessary anticipation

and none of those are fatal flaws, nor are they significant negatives on a prospect profile who's got tons of strengths and positives - he just wasnt the perfect guy that people touted him as

and that's not to say fields is perfect either - he had some issues with holding onto the ball too long, missing some pre-snap recognition at times, sometimes got stuck on his early read too long... the difference is it felt like throughout the process fields was getting crucified for some of his areas for improvement while lawrence's largely got ignored

and im frankly shocked that zach wilson was ever ahead of fields, and trey lance too - so many teams passed on him when he was right there

but as you say - the best way to 1) see what you have in a qb and 2) help them get better quicker is to surround them with supporting talent be that an OL or some weapons or good offensive coaching

Things keep getting worse for Cleveland. Even more players have tested positive for COVID. One of them was Baker Mayfield who will likely now sit out Saturday's game against the Raiders. NFL as of now has no plans currently to postpone the game despite the outbreak in Cleveland.

Browns fans are celebrating. They’ll be better with Case Keenum.

Considering the rule is the team must have already fired their Head Coach, this may actually not be too bad but talk about potentially screwing up a team's playoff chances in the final weeks. We see what it does for coordinators who are still in the playoffs when they do interviews.

it's not like the guys who interview are actually taking those jobs and leaving their teams - just interviews - this is no different to how it's been previous years except that they've moved it forwards and in order to be eligible to approach a candidate you must have either already fired your HC or informed them that you will at the end of the season

all it does is allow for fairer opportunity for those playoff coordinators

and teams can still deny permission to interview too (albeit that's a double-edged sword to wield and the ravens never wield it)

Would be nice if we could have an honest conversation about COVID without folks attacking each other and the realizing it’s not quite so black and white as each side would like you to believe.

1. COVID 19 is very dangerous for many people
2. COVID 19 is not dangerous for many people
3. Vaccinations will save lives
4. Vaccinations are not the end all be all, some folks don’t need them.
5. SARS Cov-2 will be on this planet for a very long time, even if you vaccinate the entire world.
6. Outpatient treatments are just as if not more important than impatient. Yet we have very little, the answer is always vaccination. Vaccination doesn’t prevent you from getting the virus, hence the need for outpatient treatments.
7. Lets admit to the hypocrisy of our handling of this virus nearly two years into it. Example , protocols in the NFL say vaccinated players only require one test per week. What??? We know a vaccinated individual can contract and pass along the virus , why not test every day if your really worried about the player safety? O by the way, they won’t cancel Saturday’s game with the Browns because it’s an empty Saturday, no college football, and a chance for them to get max viewership and dollars.
8. It’s ok to be skeptical of a highly politicized vaccine, doesn’t mean you have to be to a conspiracy theory Facebook doctor and start discrediting modern medicine , which is god damn amazing.
9. It’s hard for people to admit but, natural exposure to the virus is a good thing for the vast majority of us. Most doctors now agree(from what i read), natural exposure+ vaccination produce the strongest antibodies. That’s probably why i could to fucking Disney world and lighting games literally every weekend but never get sick. I got my flu and COVID -19 vaccine and all while being exposed to that shit on the reg. Side note: I heard from a friend that some networks are reporting Florida is falling apart because of COVID. Not true , we’ve been cool for a long time now. Come visit I’ll buy you a drink.
10. Stop mandating shit and stop “cancelling folks”. A sure fire way to ensure Americans don’t comply: tell them they have no choice and no speech. Good luck with that strategy. Let’s just have good honest conversations and allow good speech to defeat bad speech.

Sorry for the rant. I am just tired of COVID hypocrisy. Ill drink a beer with any of y’all. Vaccinated, unvaccinated, democrats, Republican, English, Australian, i don’t give a fuck. They only people I won’t hang out with are folks who have a separate Instagram account for their dogs. Fucking losers

Couple things to point out, for 10, mandates have been good for the polio vaccine and the tetanus vaccine, among others that kids have to get to get into school. I don't see how a mandate for covid is different or worse. And for something this wide spread and mutating, especially with the delta variant, the mandates are generally a good thing for society. Hell, we've seen this work in other countries where the population did get vaccinated as soon as it was available.

For number 7, yes a vaccinated person can spread the virus. The huge difference though is that a vaccinated person has a much smaller period of time to spread it. An unvaccinated person can spread the virus for up to two weeks. It's not hypocrisy, it's different rules for different situations.

Okay, onto number 6, the focus is on vaccination because once you have it you just need to let it run its course while quarintine (assuming there's no complications, which do sometimes happen). There is very little out there that can force a virus through your system faster once you have it. That said it's been widely reported that the vaccinated people usually have far milder symptoms and are over it quicker, and most of the people that do end up in the hospital are the unvaccinated ones, so the primary focus is being put on preventative measures.

Finally, number 4, vaccines aren't just about the individual person getting them. By having a high percentage of the population you prevent the general spread, and the mutation of the virus. Even if an individual person would have been okay, there's a chance they passed by someone in the store or elsewhere that wouldn't be. It protects everyone that might have issues with the virus, including many that wouldn't even know it (as there are a number of seemingly healthy, in their prime people that have ended up in the hospital).

In general, vaccines are not some silver bullet that's gonna end covid. It's a part of our world now. It's about society hedging its bets; improving the odds for everyone across the board. It's about giving everyone a lower chance of getting it, milder symptoms, and a lower time they can spread it. Possibly even more important, with less of a spread there's also less mutations. With a high enough percentage of the general population being vaccinated we can move on to covid just being just a simple annoyance.

And note, not saying any of this to attack you. It's just this stuff is mostly being spread by the people who make a living off of keeping others paranoid and angry for views/clicks. Side note, almost all of the talking heads and politicians telling others to resist the vaccinate and spread conspiracies about it are vaccinated.

i do not understand this at all - 26 markets but only 18 teams... the rams are on 3 different continents here including having the entirety of china and australia to themselves lol but the chargers don't feature anywhere

from what i can work out it looks like these are the teams that don't appear anywhere:
AFC East: no bills
AFC South: no colts, no titans
AFC West: no chargers
AFC North: no ravens, no browns, no bengals
NFC East: no Washington, no giants, no eagles
NFC South: no saints, no falcons
NFC West: ...
NFC North: no packers, no lions

there seems to be no rhyme or reason here lol - i do not understand it at all...

just on a geographical basis, surely it makes sense for the all the teams squeezed in the North East to find more space internationally??? yet the giants, eagles, washington, ravens feature nowhere nor do the browns or bengals

but also i get why canada would have the seahawks and vikings - but surely they should also have the bills and lions...
