Signings, Cuts, Trades

I mean tbf it somewhat worked out for him - he held off Hamilton as a starter and turned into a non-competition for that starting safety role
It definitely did. Bit I'm sure Clark thought he was going to be a long term piece in the defense and he's just not anymore. I really think it would be awesome if we could keep him but there's just no way

definitely won't be able to keep him and it won't be for cap purposes as his cap hit is only 5.1m next season. I'm sure we will try and trade him, but we may end up cutting him as his savings is 3.285m in 2023.

Oh gosh. I totally forgot we still had him under contract for next year. I still think it's likely we trade him but it's not out of the question we keep him. Thanks for reminding me we still had one more year.

It will largely come down to have the 3 safeties look this year in MM's defense

I'm ask a very stupid question so please excuse my ignorance..what is the difference between a WR and TE? Why couldn't we just use a TE as a wr. For example, if Duvernay and Proche don't perform well couldn't we use likely as wr 2 or 3. Could we convert likely to a WR?
The difference between a WR and TE may seem a bit crazy to describe but they definitely are different. Mark Andrews is one of the better tight ends in the league and he has been asked to line up out wide at times outside of the alot but If Greg Roman asked him to do that 90 percent of the time then it probably wouldn't be using him to his strength and using him at his best to make plays on the field. Tight ends are also usually bigger and carry more weight than wideouts so asking them to do things typically a wideout would do on a consistent basis especially against a outside cornerback could potentially be a bad idea. Cornerbacks are usually faster than linebackers and safeties which is what typically a tight end will face in coverage.

Looking at who's left on the roster... I feel like this isn't actually a hard cutdown this year. I counted 57-59 guys vying for the 53 right now and I think anyone beyond 50 could just as easily end up on the PS.

My 6 off as it currently stand would be (in no order)...
Aaron Crawford, Isaiah Mack, Trystan Colon, Kevon Seymour, Shemar Bridges, Tony Jefferson

Isaiah Mack is the only one I feel strongly about right now and it would not be hard at all to find a spot for him if they wanted. The rest are kinda meh and can either make it to the PS easily or slide onto the 53 while replacing a player that is probably pretty similar.

And just for transparency, my "easy" cuts or guys that are just clearly too far down at this point...
QB Brown, RB McCrary, FB Mason, WR Victor, WR Polk, WR Webb, TE Oliver, TE Poljan, OL Sharpe, OL McKenzie, OL Murray, DL Nichols, LB Moon, LB Wiley, LB McClain, CB Washington, CB Worley, CB Vereen, P Dicker

I think the line between TE and WR is getting more blurred all the time. And to @Florida Raven Fan point, I think a guy like Likely could very well play more of a WR role. I’ve actually been thinking the same and would bet that Roman is looking at ways to get him involved outside of the normal TE role.

Andrews lined up around 65% in the slot last year, which is probably how he would have Likely line up as well and has done during the preseason.

Also why would The Jets trade Mims to a team that they will be playing against in Week 1?
This has actually no relevance of any kind. Realistically, Mims will not get moved because the Jets don't want to move him. It would take a very serious offer to even have them consider it.

If the Ravens were the team that offered that very serious offer there's no chance they would care we're playing them week 1. We're not in their division, they're not going to be competing for a WC spot. Playing the Ravens one time has no impact on trades.

Look no further than the Ravens trading Worley to the Steelers for aate round pick a few years ago. That's a far more "intense" situation than Mims to the Ravens. But this is all a non-issue because Mims isn't going to hold out

Free Mims! And send him to Baltimore

Seeing a lot of expectations that we're going to have like 4 or 5 handshake-IR-roster type transactions and just feel the need to call out that we shouldn't expect that much. Can only return a maximum of 8 guys this year so some shorter term injuries are going to have to sit on the active roster for a bit. I'd be shocked if we burn that many potential options just setting the 53 man roster.

Clark can still be a long term producer on defense. Him and Hamilton can both be defacto linebackers and positions are starting to get real blurry anyway. It's basically now just to put the best 11 out there.

Chuck Clark is the  of the defense. You don't cut the heart out or you die.
