Signings, Cuts, Trades

his cap hit on the roster is 8.1m. If he's traded the entire cap hit of 11.5m gets accelerrated to this year or possibly a 50% this year 50% next. year. Agree, they won't need to pay him next year if that happens.
post-June 1, the acceleration happens the following year.
He has a $12.3M cap hit next year that can't be decreased, regardless of whether he's on the roster or not.
So they either a) keep him, and get him to take a paycut, b) cut him next year, with no pick compensation, or c) trade him now and salvage what they can get. Or I guess d) pay an unproductive RB $11M next year.

got it. So I have a question. During the offseason after June 1teams can take half the dead cap the current year and half the next year. Is it during the season where the dead cap accelerates into the following year?

This trade deadline doesn't have me excited as it has in the past. I think a lot of it is having our own players that I want to sign in the offseason. Obviously we can't sign them all, but we have Madubuike, PQ, Geno Stone of our former drafted players that are substantial free agents at the end of the season. Madubuike is going to cost a fortune. PQ is also another 18m avg. Geno Stone could start on most of the teams in this league.
A silver lining about probably all 3 of those great defensive players leaving is that we'll get some good comp picks out of them. That's sort of like draft capital in the bank which they could use (indirectly) to justify giving up current picks in a trade and still retain the ability to move into later rounds.

Thinking about it, it might actually be a good idea to use some future draft capital to mitigate the upcoming rostermageddon.

I think a quality pass rusher and another cb is gonna be more important than a rb…
But if Gus goes down we’re absolutely fucked

After watching Oweh whiff on that sack yesterday pass rush is at the very top of my list now
Agreed. We got guys who can give pressures but we don't have EDGEs that can scare the QB every single down, or at least most downs.

F that.

Offense wins championships in today’s NFL.

Give me Saquon!

I'm not sure. With void years I believe it accelerates to next year once the season starts, but I don't know that for sure.

Those comps wont be until the 2025 draft but I do believe we'll get 2 with Ben Powers and Josh Oliver. I believe Agoholar will cancel Colon. Still leaves us only 8 picks counting the comps.

I’d be shocked if Saquon isn’t traded. What do the Giants gain by holding on to him? Their season is toast

those comp picks, which aren't guaranteed would come in 2025. Assuming atleast one of them, maybe two would be a 3rd rounder

True, but if they trade one of their own 2025 mid round picks to move in this year's draft, they know they'll still have some 3s/4s when the 25 draft arrives. It gives EDC more options.

Not official, but wouldn't expect to get one for Oliver. OTC has us with just one comp pick for Powers. Oliver cancelled out by Agholor. I don't believe Colon qualifies.

They aren't guaranteed, but if Queen, Madubiuke and Stone aren't getting contracts worthy of a comp pick we need to re-sign them for those bargain prices. The only other risk to those picks is the Ravens spending big on FAs and I don't think that's happening.

The thing is though... if you're losing that much to FA, in order to get comp picks, you can't sign FAs. It's still net FA's lost.

Like if you lose three highly paid FAs, but sign even two cheap one's, the best you can get is one comp pick.

So if you lose a bunch of starters or key players, what happens when you can't replace them all via draft picks? You either need replacements on the roster, or sign FAs. Some of those guys could be roster cuts, but you can't bank on that either.

Said in an earlier post, but its pretty clear EDC isn't as high on comp picks as Ozzie was. You could argue some of that was spending during Lamar's cheaper window, but we need to see how that plays out.

Surprized at that since Oliver's contract was so much bigger but Colon might not qualify like you said. In other words that would suck.

Right but like I'm not sure Stone is getting a big deal in FA anyway. If he signs for like $5-6M, we could easily sign somebody in that price range at another position.

Stone will be the most fascinating player in the offseason because, while I think he's a really good player, he's the 3rd best Safety on the roster. If Williams and Hamilton are fully healthy, they could easily start those two at Safety next year and not miss a beat on defense. He's literally the only one out of those three that you have players on the roster that can step in and play just as well today.

There's no replacement for Madubuike anywhere near this roster, and Queen's replacement is a 3rd round rookie (which we'll probably have to go with anyway).

I think we'll take a long look at the roster and set prices for anybody. But like there comes a point where you say OK, I've got guys on the roster already that can do this. And we have to go with those guys. And Safety and ILB are two positions where I think we have talent on the roster already that we need to see what they can do.

that's not what I mean. If we lose those players and sign free agents we won't get all of those comps.

Stone has been the best 7th rounder we have ever drafted. I hope we can extend him, but I have my doubts....especially since he will want to start someplace.
