My partner's getting posted to our embassy at The Hague next year so I'm going to have a crack at a Masters in Finance or something at Erasmus the year after. All I can say is that I'm glad I'm not trying to get into Stanford or something.
Three people I know well applied, one of them is a complete moron who has a good gpa from taking decent classes, eh test scores, cut from basketball freshmen year and nothing out of school. Misses class about ever other day to fuck around. Incredibly rich and family connections
One of the other, mother has cancer, already attended standford for a full semester as a medical student, 4.7, 1500 SAT, Eagle Scout, 4 year lacrosse player
The other, a middle eastern girl, 4.8, 1560, dance team for 4 years with ton of state wide wins, runs a Sat book drive.

there's a recent "inquest" in the UK over the "2" elite universities - of the 3000 or so places more than half of the places come from 8 schools across the country while the other half come from every other school - that's insane

The fees at those schools and the house prices in those areas must be through the roof. While the prospects for kids whose parents can't afford to do all that stuff are hugely diminished.
It's no wonder inequality is rising in pretty much every developed country. As a wise man once said: shit's fucked.
it's stupid the lack of diversity and elitism in those 2 universities - it's like they are actively fighting change which is stupid
the fees at all uk universities are nationally mandated so they cant charge extra (it's a flat 9k/yr for everyone) so its not even like the finances are a legit reason for the numbers to be that skewed - id understand a slight lean because of the extra help that those private schools that feed oxford and cambridge provide their students but for those 8 schools to provide more than half of all students to those 2 universities is actually a ridiculous proportion - like borderline unfathomable
