The General Front 7 Thread

i still intermittently find myself going back to watch his film or watch voch do his timmy williams breakdown... like its insane his talent level - and i was crushing hard on derek barnett but tim williams was the guy i wanted early on thinking that barnett would be gone in the top 5-10 easily
Same. Barnett was the most tactical and refined edge rusher I ever watched in college. But I knew he wouldn't make it to us

and yet he and hooker, my number 5 and number 3 guy on my big board respectively were so close to falling to us - it made it all the more painful knowing that we only needed one of philly and the colts not to pick one of them and we'd have got a ridiculous talent - not that im not warming quite nicely to humphrey but i was in love with those two talents and they just had to go the two picks in front... :(

I loved hooker just as much as the next guy, but feel he could have injury issues throughout his career that hinders him from reaching his potential
I was a huge Humphrey guy but it took a while to warm up to him. I watched a lot of tape and started to see his correctable issues. Plus seeing that he would be a perfect fit for our defense.

Hooker was my No. 1 player. Even b4 Garrett. If he got to 10 I really thought we would trade up for him. I was sooooo pissed when the colts drafted him!! Davis was my No.2 player. I knew he was going too 10!! Howard I thought would be top12. I was surprised all the WRswent b4 him. I thought for sure he was our pick when he was available. I thought we were gonna have a real shot at Hooker Howard and and Barnett. I thought 2 of them would be available when we picked. Hooker is a once every 10 yr safety talent. I was irritated we didn't draft Tim in round 2. But in round3 he is the steal of the draft. To get a player with Von Miller skills in round3 is so totally totally stupid.

I'm hearing good things about the young guns in the front seven. Even Correa has sounded like he's been good at ILB(which doesn't surprise me). Weirdly enough, have heard nothing about Bowser. But that might come over time. This excites me. Our front seven has speed and athleticism now. We could terrorize opposing teams with how much depth is there. It might be hard for the defense to get tired.

Also, Carl Davis has quietly impressed. Read here and there he bullied the 2nd string OL. If he takes the next step our DL is going to be unfair.

Carl Davis if nothing else should be a decent rotational space eater

Im also hoping to be proved wrong about Correa

I've had my hopes up for Correa all offseason. We've been hearing about how good he's been all week...But then I remember all the hype he got last year.

Hopefully staying at one position has him more focused.

He didn't get the hype during TC he got the hype during OTA's

So after hunting for some Pat Ricard footage (there isnt much but hes a monster in highlights) but according to APT records he ran back to back 10 yard splits of 1.48. Thats an absolutely stunning time regardless of position

I find that a little hard to believe. 1.48? That's better than receivers. Ain't no way a 280 pound man is doing that.

Let me introduce this with a caveat ;

I like Wormley as a prospect, particularly in the third round. He will be (at least), a solid presence inside with some potential upside as a pass rusher.
He also provides experience and depth at DE and is probably an upgrade over Lawrence Guy in relatively short order.

There is some reason for me to believe that we look back two years from now and think, "that was a pretty good pick".

HOWEVER....

I am bugged a little by the fact that one could see the targeting of him in the draft from a mile away. And I always suspected that it had more than a little to do with the Harbaugh connection.

One gripe I have centers around what we see transpiring in terms of our defensive line, and how it is that we were seemingly unable to assess the depth of talent on said line.

As we stand, Wormley is at best seventh on the depth chart and to this point may well be being outplayed by an UDFA from Maine.

The overriding concern has to do with what holes could been plugged in that third round.
Pat Elflein went only a few picks prior to Wormley and could likely have been traded for with a late round pick.
Kareem Hunt was on the board.
Davis Webb was on the board.
Several talented dB's on the board....you get the point.

As I said, I like Wormley. And I do concede it's possible that he ends up the best of the bunch mentioned. He does represent value where we selected him and he did show improvement in week two.

All things considered, I'd rather have Elflein.

If you draft rookies to fill holes you are probably a bad football team and that wont change because even in the 1st 3 rounds you have at best a 50% hit rate. Better to draft and develop players and if they break out as a rookie good for them
