The Random Thought Thread

Still feel have trauma from this game. I remember the 2nd half when they started playing black and yellow as everything went to shit for us. That's what made that opener feel so damn good. Then Tebow in the WC was a thing of beauty.
Ugh I was a big wiz fan too back in the day, that game was fucking painful. The called back punt return td by Webb, the dropped boldin TD, the 3rd and 19 bomb to AB, the dropped 4th down pass to housh, good god what a meltdown.

Currently there is only one player and that is Mahomes. Years ago as a young Redskins fan back in the 80s it was LT. I think Joe Gibbs felt that way also. lol

What you all think?

Have a VERY random question… I was just given a very nice Ray Rice black jersey. I have no problem keeping it the way it is, but I’m wondering if anyone here may know anyone who can change the name on the back to Dobbins instead. I don’t want to buy a completely new jersey because this one is pretty much new itself

i hate to say it but mike tomlin is too low on that list

otherwise the list is fine - you could argue vrabel probably could feel hard done by... but i dont like him so i dont care that much - ron rivera probably could feature but i wouldnt put him in

2 guys i like who i think could enter the conversation if they add a good season or 2 and who i like - Frank Reich and Brian Flores

I don’t get how Harbaugh is so high. We’ve had a total of 1 playoff W in the past 7 seasons, and only 2 since our last Super Bowl. He’s becoming the Marty Schottenheimer of current day NFL
If it's based purely on like "win/loss success", he's a top 5 coach in the league. Reid, Belichick, Carroll, and Payton would probably be the top 4 in terms of success in my eyes, and then Harbaugh and Tomlin should probably be right there around #5-6.

For the same reason that those exact same numbers do not justify knocking Justin Tucker and that is that teams are more than one guy and the Ravens consistently beat expectations. They consistently develop talent and, with the exception of 2015 where there were just too many injuries to even be competitive, they always are in it which is a mark of consistency rarely seen in the NFL.

I mean, I guess one playoff win in 7 years and getting destroyed by a team we shouldn’t have lost to in the Titans in 2019 makes him an elite coach?? I don’t know, I don’t see it whatsoever. But you’re right; we are consistent. Consistently underperforming and looking like crap in the playoffs

To me it should also be based on quality wins and playoff success. Which we’ve largely lacked since the Super Bowl, especially in terms of playoff success

The Ravens consistently overperform based on the roster and circumstance so I have no idea by what metric you seem to think the Ravens are underperforming. It actually stuns me that you would even try that claim.

Furthermore, the "playoff win" or "wins" stat is the same failed argument people use to judge QBs not realizing that there are better ways to judge who is and who is not a good QB. But I guess by that same logic Andy Reid was a scrub coach until 2 years and now he is suddenly a great coach as though getting Mahomes was what made him a good coach. Andy Reid didn't suddenly get better, he got a roster that was good enough to take that final step and that is simply how it goes.

The coaches job is to get the most out of the roster and if that is not enough then you need to get better players to fix that. The Ravens had some bad drafts and bad contract choices and still never looked like the 4-5 win team that you would expect when that happens to a franchise. My personal favorite example though is that I think Za'darius Smith might be one of the first Ravens players in almost a decade (have to go back to Boldin) to actually look decent when not being coached by Harbs and that is because the Ravens get the most out of you and the most out of you is not good enough then that is on the player.

True. However, outside of maybe the 4-5 guys I listed already, there really isn't anybody else who can even match the playoff success.

Plus, you have to get to the playoffs first. Can't win playoff games if you don't get there, which means you have to win in the regular season also.

Boy in 2019, we sure did pretty damn good with 14-2 and had the roster then… but I guess when we got to the playoffs most of those same players got abducted by aliens or something along those lines. Lamar must’ve been out that game, I don’t know. I just don’t see how you think we are over performing with Lamar at Qb and having a damn good team until we keep folding like paper when we get to the dance. Guess we need an all Madden / all time team to win a couple playoff games in your mind

Also, just for comparable sake...
John is 2-4 in the playoffs post-SB, which is in the last 8 years. This includes four years of no playoffs (three consecutive) and one losing season.

Sean Payton, post-SB, is 5-7 in the playoffs, in the last 10 years. He had three straight losing seasons.

Mike Tomlin, post-SB, is 5-7 in the playoffs, in the last 12 years. While he's never had a losing season (which is why I think he belongs higher on this list), he's now gone four straight years without a playoff win, the second said stretch of his career.

Pete Carroll is 3-5 in the playoffs in the last 6 years, and has one playoff win in his last four years.

Andy Reid, who I think is actually the best coach on this list, was 1-4 in the playoffs in 5 years in KC without Mahomes as the starter. He's 6-2 since. Now he had plenty of success in Philly also, but he also had only 3 playoff wins in his last 8 years there, and 0 in his last 4.

And the guy who shouldn't be on this list, in my opinion, is Bruce Arians. He won one playoff game in 5 years as a HC in Arizona, and was not overly spectacular in TB in 2019. I give him credit for his teams never being "bad", but to me, he has all the makings of a fairly average NFL head coach that looks really good with a star QB.

I mean, for me, the playoffs are sort of explained like this:
1. In 2018, I thought it was fairly predictable to lose to LA actually. We were an extremely one dimensional team.
2. In 2019, I agree... I'm going with the alien abduction. I have no explanation for getting trounced at home to Tennessee, outside of just a bunch of great players picked the worst possible time to play really bad. People can blame coaching all they want... I saw very few players play well in that game. Even just looking at fundamentals they sucked.
3. Beat TEN last year like we should, and then realistically, the offense just shit the bed in Buffalo.

I honestly have a tough time blaming coaching for the Lamar-era playoff losses.

The 9-7 ravens kicked the dogshit out of the pats in the 09 playoffs, that was the worst pre-sb team of the harbaugh era.

guess that makes Belichick a scrub too

So I guess the take-away here is that there are some God-awful coaches in this league now lmao

Gee I sure remember a ton of people wanting Harbaugh to be fired not long ago… what changed that? One lucky Lamar run against the Titans for the TD in the playoffs?

We wanted harbaugh fired for one reason: we were blinded by joe flacco. Plain and simple.
