The dude literally averaged like 7 air yards a catch. Not impressive
With that kinda volume you’re likely to be working every depth of the field, so no he’s not dominating with big plays, but he’s dominating by being the most reliable guy in the league and producing a shit ton and being incredibly consistent

I’ll go on record and say that if Thomas was taken instead of Correa, lamars completion % and our redzone % would be 10 points higher And we win 7/7 with lamar and are considered big time super bowl contenders. Michael Thomas is the complete ideal receiver for this offense

I'd take 125 catches 1400 yards and 9 TDs, knowing the play will work 85% of the time, over 99% of other WRs.
7 air yards per target.

To put that into perspective, Julio averages double that. Mike Evans averages almost 16. Most other big time wrs avg around 11-12. Thomas is a good WR but lets not act like its insanely hard to run 7 yards and catch a pass...I am not saying he isn't capable of more than that, he surely is. But I hate that his current production is being hyped up when any good receiver can do what he is doing in the saints offense. He averages around the same amount of separation per route as any good receiver, so where is the big deal?

I am bored so I drew this up. These are 12 of the best receivers in the league. #12 being Michael Thomas. This website screwed up my spreadsheet so bear with me -

Catches - Yards - YPC - TDs - Catch %
1. __86____1524__17.7__8___62.32

A couple notable things -
  • #2 leads the league with 1677 yards
  • Most of these guys have very similar receiving yard numbers
  • #1 and #9 avg 17+ ypc, that's incredible
  • A couple of these guys are tight ends
  • Lowest catch rate is AB at 61.90% (Ha, bitch) but has the most TDs (Still a bitch)
  • Only 1 guy averaged less than 12 YPC
  • And of course the 85.03% catch rate
So @allblackraven after seeing that, would you take Thomas over those other 11 guys listed? Does the catch rate alone warrant that? You could argue either side I suppose. Personally, the guys who really stand out to me stats wise are Mike Evans, Julio and Tyreek Hill. Damn Mike Evans is underrated.
  1. Evans
  2. Julio
  3. AB
  4. Juju
  5. Hopkins
  6. T.Y
  7. D. Adams
  8. Thielen
  9. Hill
  10. Kelce
  11. Kittle
  12. Thomas
Anyways, stats never tell the whole story but I always find this stuff interesting.

Mike Evans was playing at an all-pro level in his sophomore season and then kinda disappeared out of the consciousness because of falling off in year 3... but he's genuinely a great receiver
Now all we need is 1 more down season.... pls play yourself out of Tampa

Ridiculous season by Michael Thomas: 147 targets, 125 receptions (85% catch rate). For comparison, '17 All-Pro Antonio Brown had a 61.9% catch rate and Jerry Rice reached the 70's just twice in his 12 full seasons targets were tracked.
The comp to AB is a good comp, but when you are comparing him to Jerry Rice, it’s probably not a perfect comparison because of how they played defense back then. CBs could mug WR, there was no 5 yard rule either. It was fun watching it actually. I seriously remember CBs hitching a ride on the WRs backpack all the way down the field.

In regards to total receptions, they just didn’t pass the ball as much. I know your referring to catch rate though.

Edit: I change my mind based in the good comp due to the routes that Michael Thomas runs.

Definitely very interesting

All of them are really good, some just great WRs but I'm still taking only Hopkins and Julio ahead of Thomas. Outrageous reliability and fits like a glove in our offense.

That's a very good point about the defensive style in J. Rice times.

Not really...11 yards per catch...

That’s weak shit

I get where you're coming from and would agree if I hadn't seen so many of his catches. He made difficult grabs look routine.

I still say he caught that 3rd down pass in the Cowboys game.
