The Random Thought Thread

from brian mcfarland on twitter:

Huge Cap savings from moving on from those 3 - $21M (Smith=$9.5M; Weddle=$6.5M; Carr=$5M)
Not sure I want any of them gone. Jimmy is constantly injured by freak injuries so I can get this one but he’s still coming off an injury right now so I’ll wait until end of year to decide. He will be tough because I really have always liked him. Weddle would be cut if I kept Mosley and if we let Mosley wall I’d keep him. Carr is a guy I would highly consider keeping around but not sure I’d keep him if we cut Jimmy. So in short...

Jimmy OR Carr
Weddle OR Mosley

Right - we're making no moves before the deadline. We're not bad enough to be sellers and not good enough to be buyers.
I’d love to pry G Gabe Jackson or C Hudson from Oakland. Also heard Packers listening on Clinton-Dix and I’d trade for him yesterday

I really think this team needs to find a trade. Get someone for a 4th or a 5th round pick. Not only could we get some good pieces out there, but it would really give me a bit of faith ( and maybe the players ) that we are actually trying to contend and win and not just waiting for the draft year after year

Who is that someone who will make a difference this season?

No sense in trading any draft picks. If anything we should be trading players away.

Sad fact:

Only 6 teams have been out of the playoffs longer than the Ravens:
Cleveland Browns
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
New York Jets
Chicago Bears
LA Chargers
San Francisco 49ers

of the above teams - only 2 havent drafted a qb in the 1st round - 1 of them traded for a franchise qb and the other has one of the best/longest-tenured qbs in the league - all of them have changed coaching staffs

and only 1 other team has been out of the playoffs for the same number of years:
Indianapolis Colts

and they have also changed coaching staff

we made the playoffs famously for the first 5 years of Flacco and Harbaugh's career... that's 5 years in a row - we've now made the playoffs once in the ensuing 5 years

there's all these mitigating factors and jumping on the bandwagon and assuming the grass is greener but ultimately looking at that there's no way i can see harbaugh's position being tenable if we miss the playoffs again - im trying to be considered and non-dramatic and look at it through the eyes of a patient owner who loves stability and models after the steelers but its hard to not see harb's HC job as untenable if we go 1 playoff appearance in 6 years, none in 4 years and no division win in 7 years
