The Random Thought Thread

Marty has run so many screens to Watson and Boyle over the years I can’t understand how he has hurst and suddenly stops calling them

because we've been a terrible screen team across the years no matter the personnel and coordinators lol
if im honest at this point i kinda reckon it might have been joe lol

I shook my head, walked outside, and lit up a smoke. I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe I talked myself into that one

i was walking home across london for hours at whatever time it was in the morning in the UK - walking because all the trains and buses had stopped working because it was that late - and i remember being around hyde park in the dark and just shouted lol

i mean i was wrong about maxx but he was absolutely who i wanted in the 2nd round and i was pretty damn happy with carl davis too that year

right on one count, wrong on 2 - but all 3 players didnt pan out...

Then why aren't we trying it with Lamar?

i think we will hopefully - but he's also not known for his accuracy throwing the ball to the screen albeit he had a nice pass to a guy on a screen i cant remember in which of his 2 starts...

ill look for it

EDIT: i havent found it yet but at 4:38 in the 1st quarter in the bengals game we run a playaction pass designed to give jackson a couple of reads to make yards - it ends up with boyle for about 6-7 yards or something but hilariously lamar and gus do it wrong (i dunno who's fault it is) but lamar fakes the handoff to his left and gus isnt there lol so he spins around and gus improvises by not even pretending to take the ball as soon as he realises what's happened and just goes to cut block a defender - it was funny but showed some nice understanding of how to fix it - neither of them panicked for even a split second

ooh i also like the 3rd and 1 play we had with RGIII - he ended up being just a decoy on the end around but with both lamar and RGIII as a threat to run or pass that could create some interesting wrinkles - we might see a handoff becoming a play action boot with the ability to throw it away or run with it if nothing's there

Even during my joe support days I knew we were bad at screens because of joe, it’s so timing based and joes always been terrible at all timing based concepts.

It’s why I’ve always hated that we switched to west coast offense

ok i found the screen play i was thinking of:

1:55 remaining in the 2nd quarter vs the raiders - nice pass to lead ty montgomery straight upfield on the screen - he gets 7 yards on 1st down - nice quick throw, hits montgomery in the hands and takes him at speed upfield - less conventional but it stuck in my memory - normally that gets thrown right to the man and he can decide to cut inside or follow the blocks but this one always looked like it was designed to go outside with the way boyle tried to cut block in the open field - probably a decision to help montgomery get out of bounds given that this was a 2 minute drill

i think moreso it's that he telegraphs his intentions immediately at the snap - there's no fake or anything that sells it convincingly as anything other than a screen so there's always an overload of defenders in pursuit

2:19 left in the 3rd quarter 2nd and 5 vs the raiders, Lamar throws the ball to john brown on a comeback - he throws the ball with such timing that he throws the ball before brown has even hit the top of the stem let alone broken to the ball - it results in an incompletion only because the ball location is slightly off but it was a great example of how quickly he builds chemistry with receivers - at worst it's a beautifully executed timing on a pre-arranged target - but it could also be that it's an awesome read in tandem with brown

Imo the eco fits LJ much more than Flacco and just over the last couple of games you can see how he is hitting his receivers and for thr most part in stride.
