The Random Thought Thread

Per ESPN ,

The Patriots are one of only two 11-5 teams to ever miss the playoffs; the other was the 1985 Denver Broncos back when there were only five playoff teams per conference.

I don’t want to be the 3rd team in NFL history

it's just frustrating with the texans fumbling twice inside the 5 in consecutive games against the colts and this game too

the fact that not one of these scenarios have gone our way despite reasonably at least one of them should have
In Part 2, had the Texans scored a TD, it would've tied and I didn't think they would win in OT but you never know. Part 1? They were down by 6 so the TD would've won it for them.

Between the D-Hop trade and these losses (don't forget the Steelers loss as well), it's fuck the Texans until further notice.

the other thought though is that if you score a TD they have to go 40 yds further with only 40 seconds extra clock

Definitely a valid thought but the analytics would still push strongly in the other direction, especially with that defense. If Damon Arnette doesn't release the WR to cover absolutely no one in the flat, the Raiders win. Can't penalize Gruden's decision there for incredibly poor execution, in my mind.

I agree here. 19 seconds shouldn’t be what loses you the game, that’s entirely on the defense and the kicker who missed the XP. That is just inexcusable defensively, you just can’t give up that play in that situation

Exactly. The Dolphins were forced to use the sidelines - no other option. And you can give up a few 10 yard chunks and still force them into a Hail Mary or lateral only situation. That's literally so little time left. Even Flores came out and said they wanted the Raiders to score so they could have the time, because the statistical probability of winning with 19 seconds left was so slim. The problem was the execution (and probably play call on the defensive side), not the decision for 3 points or 6.

Actually the offsides call that gave the Raiders a first down probably lost the game for them. They would have had one yard to get a first down and be able to use more clock if it wasn't a penalty. Of course this is assuming they make the first down. That being said the missed extra point, facemask penalty and bad defense is what lost them the game, not whether they went for the touchdown or not. Was it a fluke. It absolutely was, but I still would have felt safer with a touchdown in that situation knowing how bad their defense is to begin with and knowing Fitz has a terrific arm.

Disclaimer that I didn’t see the game, I followed live though, and just based on full game highlights it definitely doesn’t seem as if the dolphins should’ve been able to pull that off

except for the fact that their defence has been absolutely abject all year and is liable to collapse

So no matter what steelers will have higher seed than us.
yes we couldn't be higher the the Steelers but now that the Steelers and Jets won we are currently sitting at the 6 seed with a very real possibility we land in the 5th spot. I believe next week the Bills will be playing starters to see if they can land the 2nd seed and if the Bills beat the Dolphins coupled with us beating the Bengals we will be the five seed.

So part of me has been wondering if we got our COVID breakout at the right time. Granted it would be ideal to skip it entirely, it’s a very real possibility that some of these big playoff teams could suddenly get hit hard especially with the holidays coming up here. Granted the same could happen to us, but like half our squad got it I think so I that is kind of mitigated to an extent I would think.

i mean, imagine if you’re KC and had a week off and then Patrick Mahomes gets positive or close contact before their game. Same could happen to the Bills too with any number of players. You wonder how that would impact those teams especially those who have been minimally impacted by the virus. You definitely can’t afford to drop a game because you had to play a practice squad as your starters like we did vs PIT.

Browns looking like they’re in a tough spot.

You love to see it.
