The Random Thought Thread

I used to talk shit about averret when he first started getting some play for us lol but i remember before he got hurt, he was looking like a whole new cb.. shit at one point i was calling him out best man cb lol ( it was only during games)...i hope he can come back and continue to progress
I think we forget how long it takes corners to develop. Averett had stellar film in college and I was super hype we picked him, but yeah I definitely didn’t have many good thoughts after his rookie year.

he looked VERY good in his last game action though, I think he’s gonna be a steal

Don't think we'll be able to afford him, but who knows. Isn't this his last year under contract?

I salivate at what this secondary can look like fully healthy. It fucking SUCKS that Tavon has missed the last two years.

it is his last year and most likely last year as a Raven.

Yeah he’s gone after this year. Wish there was a way to get a refund on Tavon “Look everybody! I’m Mr. Glass!” Young and instead give that money to Averett

Speaking of which @rossihunter2 , that's some bullshit how a number of "fans" are acting towards those players who missed those penalty shots.

it's fucking awful - and so predictable - i was under no illusion that anyone in the world outside of england was supporting england - and a big reason why is our "fans" - we have the worst fans in the world

what's the worst is that everyone with any decency knew as soon as we saka's pen was saved that he was gonna be racially abused all over social media afterwards - he's a 19 year old kid who showed more courage than anyone else in that team to take that penalty and he's a wonderful person who's full of joy playing in a squad of good people (which is not something you could always say about england teams of the past) who genuinely nurtured and supported each other and cared about those around

marcus rashford has done more in british politics since the pandemic than the opposition party in government - a true leader, kind, good person who again showed a ton of bravery and he got it fractionally wrong

ive never been prouder of an england team in my lifetime and never been more disappointed (albeit not surprised) by the response of these fans

and the government have a lot to answer for too - they refused to criticise those fans who booed the players's stance on racial equality and then act surprised today when the fan backlash has consisted of a ton of racial abuse - they helped create this environment

i mean if we wanted to we could definitely do it next offseason - we could cut tavon for 6m and give that money to averett

we like him here - but there's absolutely no way averett gets even close to that on the open market - he just hasn't played enough starting reps (not his fault necessarily) to prove himself to other teams

and if im averett and another team elsewhere offers similar money to the ravens next year i go elsewhere because we're stacked at corner and marlon's not going anywhere and peters might be here a while too...

I would most definitely cut Tavon, even if we aren’t able to keep Averett, that’s 6M we can use on a player who hopefully gives us more than a game/game and a half per year

Not sure why they couldn't pay Averett unless his market value is of a starting value Corner, in which case obviously they wouldn't.

Tavon is going to need a big, injury-free season to avoid getting cut himself after 2021. Frankly, with a cap number of $9.2M next year, I'm not sure there's many path's where's hes back at that number.

With cap savings of nearly $6M, and the likelihood that Jimmy may not be back next year, I think approaching Averett to stay at a reasonable rate makes sense.

If he's going to get north of like $10M a year on the open market, which I doubt he does, then yes, obviously, he'd be gone. But if he's in the like $6-7M year range, he could return.

Tavon played a lot better than Averett has shown, and we got him for $8.6M a year with not much in the way of guaranteed money. He's a slot corner so his value is a little lower, but there's certainly open possibilities there.

I think it'd be interesting to see how next offseason would shake out. Averett would get pretty good playing time as the #3 corner. Probably at least 40-50% of snaps, and maybe more.

His problem is Young and Jimmy are "back", for now. Jimmy is literally on a year-to-year contract at this point, and I don't know how much longer the Ravens will continue that. And as we both alluded to, Tavon is 100% likely to at least take a substantial paycut next year IF we even want him back. He already took one this year, otherwise he'd be gone now too.

What would be a great sign for Averett is if he can kind of "win" that #3 corner role this year. We're certainly not married to either Jimmy or Tavon, so if he can outplay both, that would bode well for hiim.

Who knows, EDC seems to love Young Mr. Glass for whatever reason. Maybe the fourth or fifth times the charm and he plays 3/4 games, a step up from 1

I'm pretty sure Averett wouldn't sign unless he was given the opportunity to become a starter. Tavon, when he is available has been very good and a ball hawk. It's been a shame we haven't had him the last couple of years.

The good thing is we have the only CB in the league that has graded above 80, per PFF, in both the slot and on the boundary in the league, in Marlon Humphrey.

I get what you are saying though, the best ability is availability.

it'll be hard for him to outright win that CB3 job just because it forces humphrey to play the slot - and while he can do that, he's at his best outside but hasn't been able to consistently play there for the last couple of years...

i think the best case is that all 5 CBs play a lot

Marlon and MP obviously starting but then tavon, averett and jimmy get used situationally with Jimmy doubling as a dime safety or a man-coverage vs athletic TE defensive weapon

we've seen that averett has the speed to matchup against some of the faster guys in the NFL - if he can start getting hands on receivers in press then I think we see him start taking jimmy's 3rd outside CB role a bit more

i just think that if tavon's available that he'll be the number 3 - he offers so much as an all-round slot - instincts, change of direction athleticism (although that remains to be seen if after these injuries he still has it), great blitzer, good tackler, ball skills

the question as always with Tavon is whether he can stay available

With the exception of 2 years (rookie year/3rd year), the rest of the seasons since 2016 he has only played a game and half. People keep saying he's a ball hawk. Well after all these injuries, especially coming off the ACL injury, who's to say he is anywhere near that now? I just don't get anyone's infatuation with him. He's like the Samuel L. Jackson character, Mr. Glass.

I'm rooting for him and always liked him as a player. No question he's had his injury issues.

The good thing is that ACL injury happened early in the year and it's not uncommon to come back at full strength.

Well he's playing for like double the veteran minimum, so its not like he's expensive. Guy is playing for less than $3M this year.

I don't really see who has an infatuation with him. He's a very good slot corner when healthy, and he's making very little money.

If he doesn't play, it'll basically still be the same secondary we've had for years. And if he does, then our secondary will likely be significantly better, because Marlon won't have to play the slot (or as much), and we have like 5 guys at least who I think can still start and be above average at Corner in this league.
