I just saw that penalty they gave colts guy and wow.. they dnt understand that its also sort of a momentum thing for the players also. Taunting gives players a lil boost in their confidence after making good plays

Can't let players have fun in the "No Fun League"

Also, I feel like this is just another way for the refs to affect outcomes of games. You know damn well that some team is going to be facing the Steelers or Bucs this year and get a critical taunting penalty called which ends up losing the game for them.

They shouldnt have needed analytics to tell them that though is what im saying
That’s fair, tradition is just tough to break and coaches needed to see the the hard data to prove them wrong I guess. Falling short of fourth down is also a good way to fuck around and lose winnable games too so you gotta make sure you got the guys and the plays to do it.

It’s the spirit of the game. Football is about imposing your will on your opponent, physically, mentally, it’s all part of it, you kick their ass and then remind them that you’re happy to keep doing it by talking a little shit afterwards, it’s demoralizing after a while, your opponent starts to feel inferior, then the game becomes smooth sailing because they just wanna get off the field and go home.

Taunting, to a degree, is a part of football, period.

Would rivalries exist without some form of what they’re calling “taunting” now? Saw something back in the 2000’s that was flagged for taunting which was very clearly taunting… but now? :D:D:D

I find your definition of taunting strange then, like you’ve been in the heat of a competitive contact sport, and you are offended by a finger wag in that context?
Well I'm certainly not offended by it. The "heat of a competitive contact sport" thing doesn't really mean much to me. Why do some players seemingly never taunt anybody and others do it all the time? It's not like it's like wildly outside of somebodies control. At the very least, don't actually finger wag at somebody. That's not instinctual at all. That's your brain processing the fact that you want to show a guy up, and then you doing it. Guarantee if he spends the 1.5 seconds to turn his body and he finger wags to his own sideline, no flag is coming out. Just like a guarantee if you pound your chest staring at the end zone, instead of pounding your chest standing over another player and staring down at him, it won't get flagged.

You get to the take the same action, and achieve everything you want to achieve, without getting flagged. That is, of course, assuming that your objective isn't to actually taunt.

I've never been offended by anything that happens on a football field. But then again, I'm not an official, or the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, who's job it is to make money for other billionaires, and they seem to think its not good for the sport. So to me, that's sort of the end of the discussion.

And I can't blame it on the "No Fun League" mantra, because again, they allow 60 person group photos after an interception, as well as allowing lengthy touchdown celebrations and even celebrations for executing a good fart.

Yeah only one side here thinks quality of product doesn’t fucking matter in a billion dollar industry lol
Yup, and it wasn't me. Think you might be barking up the wrong tree on that one.

If the Patriots can drop Tom Brady and trot Cam Newton (a black QB in Boston mind you) and 52 other guys nobodies heard of out there, which they did in 2020, and they didn't miss a beat from a revenue standpoint (other than macroeconomic conditions beyond their control), I'm not sure "quality of product" is the top result you'd come up with in the game of "why does the NFL make so much money".

Just wondering why you brought up race in this conversation man. You know I love all of y’all but I’m honestly curious!

Still a bit situational though.
In reality, most of the analytics would tell you that punting is like extremely rare if you're applying analytics correctly. Like 4th and 3 from your own 20 isn't a punting situation based on a lot of the analytics.
The reason coaches don't really fall analytics to the max is because they don't have the job stability to do it. Analytics is largely long-term based. It basically says if you make the same decision on situation X, Y number of times, in the long run, it'll be successful for you. But coaches don't get the long run. A decision to punt vs going for it could end up being the difference between employed vs unemployed.

Because Boston markets and black people typically don't go well together. You can pretty much ask anybody who lives in that area or has been to that area about the racial divide because Boston Irish Catholics and black people. I'm certainly not the only person who thinks this or sees this.

I can guarantee you that Mac Jones, even if he sucks, will be more beloved in New England than Cam Newton ever will be.

The point was to show that you can take one of Earth's most beloved "white people" in Tom Brady, move him completely out of a predominantly white market, and insert a black QB who is struggling, in a market that isn't prone to love black athletes, and the Patriots would STILL sell out every game and dominate ratings in TV markets. And that's on a team with no "star power", and no "name brand" players that fans would actually go pay money to see.

Team rivalries would certainly still exist. Individual player rivalries perhaps not so much, though I don't see those as prevalent in the NFL anyways.
Players would just take the "taunting" off the field, into social media or post game talks or whatever. Pretty much what they do now anyways. A lot of these guys just run their mouths before and after games, but say very little on the field, which is kind of how it should be anyway.

Jesus Christ you are robotic as fuck, you’re like Ben Shapiro on these boards, but whatever helps you sleep at night.

I mean if you think taunting is instinctual, then we were certainly raised different ways, or at the very least, taught football very differently. I'll obviously be sleeping just fine. I'm not the one getting flagged and potentially fined for taunting. It's the players that will sleep with less money for lack of self control, not me.

It certainly wasn't me. You might think it was me because you misread what I wrote, but that's not on me. All I did was make the point that the NFL would make less money if the talent pool dropped, but it wouldn't diminish down to nothing or drop to like a million dollars a year in revenue.

College football and high school football have vastly lower quality of play. They both make gigantic sums of money off football. Hundreds of millions, if not more.

Naw.. if i can talk shit to you and fk up your game cause youre mentally weak, im gonna do it every single time. Its like when we were growing up, we are gonna make you cry every single day when you come outside till you prove to us that you not a crybaby no more.

one single highschool program do not make hundreds of millions though neither does a college program..

Personality makes rivalries imo.. without ravens and steelers personalties, it wouldnt even be considered a rivalry tbh. Look at us vs titans now!! Those two games last season because of the players taunting and all that confirmed the rivalry

And that's fine. Sounds like we'll see a lot of the perceived "mentally weak" guys chuckling this year when they got the free 15 yards from the guys who still think this is their backyard. I think the tissues are more likely to be passed around those who are crying to the refs when the yellow comes out.

Mentally weak, in the NFL, has a way of shifting on a dime...

Well, competitiveness mostly makes rivalries. You can talk as much as you want and hit as much as you want, but if the games aren't competitive, only one side is going to think its a rivalry.
