The Random Thought Thread

These new receivers coaches are doing EXACTLY what we all had hoped, and this is what some of us have said all offseason, you can’t fire perhaps the greatest run game engineer of all time when you have the ideal weapon for him to scheme with, you need to invest in him and develop him the same way you would a talented player.

Every other team Roman coached for, had subpar running qbs who genuinely got exposed after a few years and Roman was made the scapegoat and sent packing early. The ravens gave him a qb who isn’t sub par, which is a first for him, and he’s done excellent, but he needed assistance, he hasn’t had an organization invest in him to expand his passing game which he inherently didn’t have a strong grip on.

patience and commitment matters. We have a problem with harbaughs overly loyal ways at times, but there’s a big difference between cam Cameron/Marty/pees and greg Roman, the former 3 are dinosaurs and they’re all meh, the latter is a savant at what he does and needed help elsewhere.

more than this he was equally as affected by the pandemic as all of the players in terms of offseason work and install - the idea was clearly that year 1 was about developing that running game and year 2 was about developing further by expanding the passing game etc.... but he never got the opportunity at all and by mid-season we changed up and went back to the running game with the emergence of JK and the veer

he had a full offseason to install this offence with Lamar etc. from OTAs onwards

i genuinely think it's more about that than anything else - no idea what sort of schematic contribution we're getting from Keith Williams and Tee Martin and I don't doubt that they contributed but i dont know that Roman needed help rather that he just needed time and a QB...

i look back at the bills offence he designed with Tyrod and those passing concepts are not dissimilar at all and that was an explosive downfield passing attack but Lamar's just a better QB in all facets than Tyrod but the offence hasn't fundamentally changed massively in much the same way as the core tenets of his running game are very similar to what he ran in buffalo and san francisco with tyrod and kaep

but there also can be no doubt that the receiving coaching has been incredibly impactful and effective and I hope we find ways to keep these guys around because I think they're going to be hard to keep a hold of

Record of the team doesn't always factor into how watched a game is. Dallas is probably the most watched team every season. They haven't been relevant from a W/L perspective in multiple decades. Steelers also have probably the most national fanbase in the league.

Ravens/Chargers is a better game no doubt, and Lamar is great to watch nationally too. Chargers are just a pretty irrelevant team from a media/viewership standpoint. They're an afterthought in their own market.
Totally agree. A better example than Dallas is the Washington Football Team. They have been bad for 20 years except for a few playoff teams, have the worst owner in sports and still get watched. They have a huge fan base due to the market they are in and the Steelers have a very good fan base and well traveled fans also. No way they don't get good ratings.

I'm hoping for a primarily in the trenches kind of draft. Nothing exciting, but it needs to be done. We can't get soft on the trenches because otherwise we'll keep getting our asses handed to us by the more physical playoff teams out there. Plus, you don't throw a Mercedes (Lamar) out there without insuring that baby to keep it protected (OL).
I wouldn't call Lamar a Mercedes. He's a cross between a Bentley and a Porsche.

Eh, some of what I saw in our passing concepts the past 2 years seriously made me question if Greg Roman understood why route combinations exist and what each route or concept is trying to accomplish, real head scratching shit

nothing wrong with what we did in year 1 - it was just pretty basic
and while year 2 was uninspiring i do think some of it was the inability to add to the year 1 offence which was a simple and basic passing attack as well as just generally poor execution

dont get me wrong i think it's massively awesome what's happening this year but i think at least 50% of it is just better execution by the receivers

Roster crunch is almost here. At 49 now but Ferguson should be back soon after the covid bout.

Bateman and maybe Boykin to the 53 in the next couple of weeks if not this week.

Seymour has been playing gunner and would now be exposed to waivers if elevated again.

Andre Smith has 1 elevation left (2x covid replacement), although they could just cycle through the PS Ts until they figure out Stanley and/or Phillips.

Boyle, Hayes, Phillips, Westry, Wolfe all guys who will likely return at some point, although timetables on them are probably a bit longer.

Bell could find the 53 at some point although you probably sub another RB off the 53 if that happens.

Jaylon Smith just got released from the Cowboys. I wonder if we could even afford him but I would like to see us grab him over a guy like Jaime Collins.

i posted it on the signings thread, but he’s already getting paid by Cowboys.. so maybe he won’t ask for much. Cause we broke lol

The same things people are getting on Queen about, he's doing worse and at a higher cost.

What is going on with Queen? I read he was even benched briefly during Sunday

Please keep Boykin on the PS. I don’t want him taking snaps away from Channel 3. That boy is hungry

I think everything you said is correct and definitely has been brought up do to the lack of offseason. The execution has a lot to do with the loss of Yanda and then later Boyle and Stanley.
