tbf to roman but some of the answer comes from lamar - lamar was awesome against the blitz in 2019
what's frustrating is that in a post-yanda world, i think roman's taken the wrong tack to adjust

in 2019, lamar was lethal out of empty sets (which necessarily means no run-fake) and spread the defence out even though our weapons were Andrews, Ingram, 1-legged Hollywood, Snead and Seth Roberts - that offensive passing game was unstoppable because lamar trusted the OL to make the right decisions so that he was confident that he could ID the blitzer (and the extra man if it was cover 0) and that he could get the ball out to the open receiver or beat the free rusher and then find someone after breaking contain

roman's answer to losing yanda (and then stanley to injury) and that OL trust was to go heavier and max protect etc. but the problem with that (as you sort of said) is that it limits the routes you can run which naturally brings the defence closer to the LoS which limits the space underneath, but it also narrows the defence because you're leaving condensing your formations which means that it's easier to disguise pressure and blitzes and makes it harder to ID and therefore harder for the OL to make good decisions and harder for Lamar to make good decisions re: blitzers and harder for Lamar to trust his OL to sort out the pressures too

that being said lamar's just got to be better - but i also think that roman had the wrong answer in 2021 (and tbh in 2020 somewhat too)

Yea i suppose. I’m holding out hope we’re working out a deal for Culley to come back and be our O coordinator.

Please no. Watching the 49ers makes me sad. I wanted us to hire Mike McDaniel when he was a run game coordinator for them. Now we're stuck with Roman ugh..

I don’t believe so. But he has a great relationship with Lamar and I love his quote in the off-season, basically what we’ve been begging for.
“"There's nothing Lamar can't do," Culley told the NFL Network. "Right now, though, they just run a system that kind of limits what he does in the passing game. But if they opened it up, he would be able to do that."

i mean all we know about him is that he was our pass game coordinator and we didnt do that stuff while he was here...

Right but I don’t think you take that parting shot at the system if you had a hand in it. Sounds like he had some ideas that were largely ignored by a stubborn and limited Roman. I want to bring back Culley and promote Urban, who Lamar also seems to have a great relationship.

just not sure we have any indication that's in any way true at all
for all intents and purposes Roman is well-liked and respected in the building - if he wasnt and he didnt run the offensive room properly, there would be no doubts he'd already have been fired
 
Speaking of the Chiefs, I find it interesting that:

-2018 - lose to them, make the playoffs
-2019 - lose to them, make the playoffs
-2020 - lose to them, make the playoffs
-2021 - beat them, miss playoffs

Beating the Chiefs was our Infinity Stone. Convince me otherwise.

My point exactly. Assuming no one gets hurt (which is a big ass assumption), Roman gets to work with a full assortment of weapons. If he can't adapt, adios.

On another note, the first time I see a rollout-to-the-right playcall at any point, I want him gone lol.

Speaking of speaking of the Chiefs. With Mahomes and all their weapons, they decide to run a wildcat…. Lol 7-0 Steelers. Also, Ben is really hard to watch . It’s just sad at this point

I think Pitt is gonna look back on the Najee Harris pick and think, we really could have done a lot better. Not that he's bad, but I really don't think he's that good

He has no help though. The O line is bad and safeties are playing close to the LOS. No one respects bens ability to push the ball deep anymore.

As a Ravens fan I loved the pick.

As a football fan I didn't understand drafting a rb in the first that isn't a generational talent, your OL is AWFUL, your qb stinks and your CBs suck. What do I know though?

You're not wrong and I'm not saying he's bad. He's not. But I mean exactly what I said. I think they'll look back and think we probably could have done better with that pick.
