Here is a thought.
We have a lot of third ( fourth? Fifth ? ) string players on the field.
In the NFL, starters are cream of the crop. About as athletic as you can possibly get. True freaks of nature.
Not so much the further down the depth chart you go. Some (many ) of the players on our team, in every way shape and form are just NOT the level of athlete to those they are competing with. They aren't even in the same league. ( no pun intended ) They are getting beat and bullied from one end of the field to the other.
Man that has to take a toll on your psyche. Knowing you are just not good enough to compete, and being reminded of that play after play after play and knowing it is your job to get back out there and take it. Doing your best, but knowing it is not enough you are just overpowered, and out skilled.
I don't know about you, but I would find it difficult to compete in that scenario. I would at least like to have a fighting chance.
Now don't misunderstand me, I am not saying they should have a safe room with coloring books. It is professional sports, survival of the best and the fittest. I am saying I fully get how debilitating it can be to want to compete at a certain level, but to be completely unable. Sometimes it just wears you down physically and emotionally to the point where you just want it all to end.
I think that could explain some of the lackluster effort of some of our players. Mainly those on the lines.
Or maybe I am wrong. I don't know.
