Do you think Harbaugh would still be afraid of hiring an OC who hasn't failed very publicly somewhere else, in case he becomes a threat?
He's got another 6 years of tenure since he hired Morhinweg, another successful spell behind a good offense would probably make Harbaugh's position unchallengeable, no matter how good the young coach was.
At least I hope that how he thinks when he's hiring, but Harbaugh's first priority has always been his own survival.
Agreed. This whole "he's afraid of somebody taking his job" narrative makes literally no sense.
Like play it out... how does it happen? If the offense is working great, via a great play caller, there's a strong possibility the team is winning games or is competitive. In that case... why are you firing the HC? You fire the HC if the team is consistently losing. And if the team is consistently losing, pretty good chance the OC isn't setting the world on fire either, so not much reason to promote them.
Basically haven't really seen many, or any (I can't really think of any) where a team fired a HC, promoted their OC to HC, and were successful doing so. So not sure why the Ravens would be any different.
The most likely outcome is the one we see time and time again... team hires quality OC, he does well, leaves shortly after for a HC gig on another team, not the one he's currently coaching for.
It's also sort of "duh" that a coaches job is to promote their own survival. Is that not your job also? End of day, every coach, GM, and player in that league's first priority is job security for themselves. Don't let anybody fool you into thinking they're out here doing the "greater good". They're not.
BUT, simultaneously, job security is almost exclusively tied to W/L record for HC's. So if you're perpetually hiring bad coordinators just so you can look better, it'll have the opposite effect. You'll fail with them, and then you'll get fired.
