The Random Thought Thread

before the 2019 draft i did a bunch of data gatherings about how often we picked WRs with high picks, how often they panned out etc.

for the first nearly 25 years of our organisation's existence, we just didnt buy enough lottery tickets to get any chance of a return at that position - we finally took some swings and suddenly we got Hollywood and then Bateman - still no superstars per se and still not hits outside of R1 but certainly progress

before that Torrey Smith was easily the best WR we'd ever drafted - and is still easily the best WR we've ever drafted outside of R1 (and there's basically no other contenders)

the first (good) self-evaluation this organisation made at this position was that we didnt take enough swings at the position
the next self-evaluation it needs to take relates to figuring out why it's consistently failing outside of R1 at the position - is it solely luck or are they not focussing on the right traits or combination of traits in non-day 1 prospects
The issue is - we still don't buy enough lottery tickets. Just about the time we figured we need to use early picks on receivers, the rest of the league realised they need to be more aggressive in their approach, in draft and in FA. We are trying to play a catch up game still.

I also think our evaluation is lousy. We seem to draft them to fit in run first offense, not on their pass catching / route running abilities. And since we suck developing them, lower quality picks never amount to anything.

no we haven't done well with our Michigan guys, but it's not like we expected that out of Ojabo. Ojabo was all about potential, since he was a top 10 to 15 guy in this draft class. We were lucky he fell to us and I don't care he went to michigan or not.
I've just not commented on Ojabo here. Also Ojabo was my SIIE lmao. I'm really just highlighting the absolute dogshit drafting from those schools recently. Hopefully Ojabo breaks the streak. He will have every opportunity to do so

agree, those other picks weren't great but none of them were higher than a 3rd round pick and most later than that. We have hit on multiple day 3 picks, but we can't hit on all of them and I understand you are talking about Michigan, Penn state and SMU specifically. Imo, I just think we are using Stepehens improperly as he was coming on last season. Proche was a 6th round pick, so I'm truly not concerned and feel if he had more opportunities he'd be better off, but Roman refuses to give him more opportunities. For the most part, he does have excellent hands.

Yeah the regression in Stephens by making him play outside corner has not been great to see at all. Also totally agree Proche is a 6th round pick so you don't count that.

Stout and Oweh need to come along to help out the Penn state name

Stout is doing ok, has a very good percentage of his kicks inside the 20 and is replacing a great punter. He has big shoes to fill. Oweh literally just turned 24 years old in the 2nd year of his contract. You guys need some patience. We have multiple examples of players who weren't good in year two of their rookie deal that are very good now, ie Queen, Bowser to name a couple.

Yes that's why as I said, they need to come along

You're about to get an essay on why you're stupid for saying that smfh
I just scroll through the essays now without reading them. Just gotta pick your battles lol

This would be the move IF (1) the dogs at the position actually made it to FA and (2) we could somehow convince them to actually come here
I don’t have the numbers to back this up and I feel like our resident numbers guy/expert-arguer will correct me for saying this but it seems like we run way more than we pass (based on eye test), so maybe a new OC with a change in offensive philosophy (extremely balanced or favoring more towards the pass) could persuade some pass catchers who are actually worth a damn?

My point about an injured Lamar was that he's unlikely to be 100%. The RBs are back, so why call on Lamar in particular to run defenses into good passing looks?

There are options between Roman and a pass heavy system. The Eagles and Bears both have OCs with no experience of running QBs who transitioned mid-season. I never understood the notion that he was uniquely able to call QB runs.

Maybe Lamar can be a better and more consistent passer away from the very worst passing system in the NFL throwing to the worst WRs in the NFL? (I think the group has ranked between 29 and 32 every year.) Maybe not, but it's long past time we found out.

If hoping for the most successful season possible came without a cost, I'd be all for it, however, going into this season, my #2 hope (after a Lamar contract) was that it would be Roman's last. Now I'm hoping it's Harbaugh's last too. So on Wednesday, I don't want us to make the playoffs. On Saturday, once the game starts, then I'll start wanting a Ravens win.
Don't even mess with Lamar unless he is 100%. He is a national treasure, but more importantly my son.

Stats don't lie. They'll just tell you any truth that you want them to tell you.

Can we just stop drafting WRs and spend on them in free agency instead lol. I’m tired of being let down

One Friend of mine told me that his Broncos friend told him that if Harbaugh is fired the Broncos will have a contract for him before he gets a chance to tell his secretary to clean up his office. He than said the Broncos will execute Hackett in the parking lot like an African dictoator to help facilitate the process.
