The Random Thought Thread

I think this whole point was overblown. They wouldn’t have been maximizing Henry by continuing with exclusively shotgun and pistol runs, but that doesn’t mean Henry is gonna be wasted here. His big run came out of the pistol. Henry is the type of back who is gonna be effective on any team in the league as long as he gets his carries and the offense around him doesn’t suck assholes.

Adjusting to his presence by running under center more certainly helps, but continuing our old ways would have still produced results.
I think concerns were definitely founded.

He's a runner who had well over 80% of his carries from under center, barely received RPO stats, was behind a revamped offensive line, and just hit 30 with over 2000 NFL carries. Not to mention his YPC had been declining since his 2000 yard season.

Turns out, the Ravens did a great job of adjusting their looks and the threat of Lamar as a runner has helped mitigate the offensive line concerns as they find their footing.

Also, I don't doubt that Henry could have been effective, but Henry was the Ravens premiere signing this year that was going to elevate the Ravens offense. Having been effective at the level of Edwards wasn't going to be enough; the Ravens needed to get more and that was where my concern was.

not so sure I agree.

Last year with the Titans Derrick Henry carries the ball in shot gun 56 times for 281 yards and he carried the ball out of pistol 43 times for 192 yards. That's 473 yards on 99 carries or 4.77 ypc. I'd say that's pretty successful.

Yea it's great when you can use him from under center without a doubt but he would succeed either way.
On such small sample sizes that lack context, it doesn't really mean a lot to me.

Also, where are you finding stats for the pistol?

Derrick Henry had 1,167 yards last season. 473 came from the shot gun and pistol formation. I wouldn't call that a small sample size.

The article was from Kevin Patra that went over his carries from pistol and shot gun and I've seen it in other places as well. It was actually 95 carries not 99. 473 yardss at 4.9+ yards per carry.

Henry was only 3.8 ypc from under center last year for comparisons sake.

It's not a huge sample size and I'd like further context.

The Titans were NOT a good team last year and if he's running from shotgun in long to go situations and running from under center in neutral or early down situations, I mean...

With the arrival of Tyjae Spears, the Titans used the shotgun and pistol formations from the onset of most games. The Bengals game, for example, in 2023. Down by an FG, Henry was used out of the pistol on their very first offensive play. They converted a 3rd and 1 from under center, and then Henry immediately ran out of the shotgun for 11 yards. His next attempt was out of the shotgun on a 2nd and 3, a gain of 2 yards. Then they followed it with a run from under center for 2 yards, resulting in 1st down. And their very next play was out of the pistol on a 1st and 10. They kicked an FG on that drive.

Henry's very first touch on a 1st and 10 in the 2nd quarter? Also out of the pistol, his only carry of the drive. And their next drive begun with his carry out of the shotgun, also his only carry. On his first carry on the following drive, also on a 1st and 10, Henry had this juicy tote out of the shotgun:

He finished the half with another carry out of the pistol for 16 yards, but that was also with 1:20 remaining, which to your point, is more situational. The rest of the attempts were out of your standard and replicable scenarios.

In fact, even if we exclude the last attempt, he carried the ball 5 times on 1st and 10 either out of either pistol or shotgun. He only ran from under center twice, on 2 separate 3rd and 1s for gains of 2 yards each. The 7 carries from the pistol and shotgun netted 53 yards and a score. The Titans ended the half with a 17-3 lead. I understand the aesthetics of the 2022 season and earlier, the thoughts of Henry dominating from under center are difficult to shake. But their 2023 offense underwent notable changes. If we had acquired Henry before last year, I'd fully understand the concerns about the fit. That being said, from how he was utilized last year, and what he's shown this year, that understanding is no longer present.

Are you countering his small sample size argument by going into more detail in one game? Lol old mate has his mind made up.

No. I'm piggybacking on the season-wide statistic with an in-game analysis that fits the criteria. To see if it would ruled out as a situational outlier. The stat alone sufficed. This was just me wanting to do the due diligence.

All my Florida people be careful down there. Looking more and more like a direct hit to Tampa with the upcoming hurricane. Don’t be afraid to hit that eject button and evacuate

I should clarify, since I think people may be misunderstanding, isn't whether Derrick Henry could operate in the Ravens offense at a high level. I thought he could be a great running back still.

The issue I had was- could he operate at a level that would take the Ravens over the top. The Ravens haven't lacked for a good running game and they were making Henry their premier signing.

My concern was would his fit in the offense and scheme be enough to elevate the Ravens to new highs that we didn't have with Edwards (but got flashes of with Dobbins.) The Ravens, to me, essentially indicated he was the missing piece for the offense and I questioned if he could still be that.

I was obviously wrong and I'm happy for it.

The NFL is full of absolutely shitty teams that are all almost the same quality. Not an enormous difference between the Raiders and 49ers.

Mahomes has some BS magic constantly up his sleeve but they've had some pretty devastating injuries. This is the year to beat them.

No one and I mean no one is better than Lamar this year. Not even Mahomes. And it's not close

they said that last year as well and we decided to stop running the ball and the refs pulled a Swiftee on us
