Can't find a lot of tape on Naquan Jones. Like a good bit the one game I found. It's strange: anyone know if he was purely rotational? He doesn't show up on the d line next to Raquan Davis even.
I just saw some tape of this guy and wanted to see if anyone mentioned him. This guy can become a major problem with some development. Hopefully he slips under the radar a little and we can nab him in the 3rd or 4thRoss Blacklock is awesome - physically and athletically gifted and so powerful with some nice burst - has done really well 2-gapping as well but shown the ability to penetrate too in a way that's exciting - would like to see him try and disengage more when he's 1v1 rather than just slowly bullying his opposite man as a pass rusher - he controls the LoS but I would like to see him be more proactive trying to get off blocks in the passing game - that being said the amount of times ive seen him bull 2 guys when they try and double-team him is outrageous - has shown the upside of a nice little arm-over/swim move to split a double team but inconsistent with those disengage moves - but when he does its almost guaranteed he's going to get a pressure of some sort (hurry/hit/sack)
have seen him inconsistently show nice hand usage but again he's quite reliant on his athletic gifts right now but he has all the physical tools to be special as a nose

Well what would you suggest are scheme fits? Personally I say to hell with the scheme and get a guy who can get after the qb because we haven’t had one since ngata was young, and I’m tired of passing on talent because we only allow 2 gapping NTs to see the field. Is there a 1st/2nd round DT y'all reckon looks like a real fit and upgrade in our scheme? All the Gallimores & co look more like 1tech penetrating guys that are more projects. I can't see one that fit our scheme and could be really a day one starter.

You're never going to get very far without respecting a great scheme. We're lucky enough to have great coaches, let's give them the right tools to work with. If 2 gapping is what they like, then 2 gapping it is. In this case a 5tech with length, power and good technique along with explosive first step is the goal. A guy like Epenesa or a physical freak like Kinlaw being a poster child, but I doubt any makes it close to our pick so I'm left looking for another guy in that mold, just a tier below.Well what would you suggest are scheme fits? We do have a great scheme, but at some point you have to realize that Brandon Williams and Michael pierces and Chris wormleys are the exact reason that you remove men from coverage on every single passing down, and that sometimes you simply need to drop just one more guy, you’ll never drop that one more guy if you can’t get pressure at all without sending 5 or more. You're never going to get very far without respecting a great scheme. 2 gapping is actually the absolute most effective way to zone blitz because it leaves you with less DLinemen and more guys standing up and able to disguise their role. And at the same time it occupies blockers in the best way that blitzers are getting free pass to the QB. So yeah I get that Wormley and Williams will never surpass 4 sacks a season but they're still useful if they just do their job, and they make Wink shine because he doesn't have to worry about getting screwed by gap integrity. We do have a great scheme, but at some point you have to realize that Brandon Williams and Michael pierces and Chris wormleys are the exact reason that you remove men from coverage on every single passing down, and that sometimes you simply need to drop just one more guy, you’ll never drop that one more guy if you can’t get pressure at all without sending 5 or more.
imagine how much more effective the pressure is if one of your 5-6 guys can actually generate some pressure rather than just be a fatass in the middle.. how much more effective the disguise is if you can frequently drop one more guy from standup 1/0 to a zone and STILL generate pressure.
2 gapping is for run stopping, period, it just doesn’t work for getting to the qb anymore unless you’re also blitzing heavy. getting run stuffers off the field on passing downs helps every aspect of the defense.
Davidson is the one I've liked the most so far, but knowing our staff his black of production is going to be a red flag...a guy who's probably a 3-4 DE in our scheme who's definitely going to be available later on day 2 (or should be) is raekwon davis - has not produced in the passing game his whole career at alabama despite being touted as a future superstar when he entered the scene but is a beast at the LoS in the running game as a 3-4 DE type with some ability to flex as a 3tech
marlon davidson is probably a guy who moves inside in the pros too especially now that he's nearly 300lbs - would be a good fit on a DL but again more of a penetrating type player throughout his career so far
there's lots of 0tech and 1 tech type players in this draft on day 3 but im not sure the ravens need another nose tackle - we need a true 3 tech or 3-4 DE - to me the place where you get that is going to be someone like Madubuike, Blacklock, Gallimore (albeit all 3 pass rush from all over the DL)
davon hamilton is probably (at least early) going to be a pass rushing 3tech only while he develops and jordan elliott seems like he's definitely a 1-gap only type player
i really like leki fotu but again he's more of a nose tackle type guy than a 3tech

Plus if you only worry about pass rush you're probably going to get yourself into a Tim Williams situation where your opponent can absolutely expose your weakness elsewhere.

Or maybe Tim Williams was a head case and couldn’t keep his head on straight and had much less to do with pass rush being his primary strength.2 gapping is actually the absolute most effective way to zone blitz because it leaves you with less DLinemen and more guys standing up and able to disguise their role. This is where you have the Fergusons, Wards and Mcphees kick inside and eat.that's all fine on 1st and 10 or whatever but in obvious passing downs there is no point having wormley and williams in there because all they do is occupy blockers at best but both are far too often easily dealt with by 1 OL in the passing game - in a flex situation where the opposing team could pass or run there's an argument that gap discipline helps create freedom for blitzers but in obvious passing situations gap integrity is less important
Before we lose sight of the initial subject, I'm not trying to advocate for any scheme, I don't care for any tbh. I just know the team and the philosophy well enough to know they're not drafting a DT in the first round if he doesn't have generational talent or isn't a fit.Or maybe Tim Williams was a head case and couldn’t keep his head on straight and had much less to do with pass rush being his primary strength.
opponents aren’t exposing a DT being a 1 gap pass rush specialist on 3rd and 10 when you want your prime rushers on the field, they’re worrying about how to handle him because he outquicks single blocks and splits doubles, and in the end it has the same impact on other blitzers, because an OL isn’t gonna get beat by a DT and then say fuck it and move on to the next lol, they’re gonna try to recover which still leaves blockers occupied, the difference between a 1 and 2 gapper is blitzers are still freed but one gets pressure and the other doesn’t.
