The WR Thread

People don't understand this: the Ravens offense is a simple one. Hate that if you want.

When scouting Washington, it's a good thing. He's not running a complex route tree. That's okay. We won't ask him to! As long as he can create separation on simple routes and catch what's thrown his way, he's a great fit.

that's my point with a lot of these receivers they just have different roles - if we get a guy who's a great route runner then great he'll be used as a strong route runner and expand from there, if we get a guy who's got unbelievable deep ball tracking then we're gonna send him on 9 routes and other deep route types and expand from there, if we get a guy who's a physical receiver on the outside then that's where we're gonna use him

the reason i quite like washington is that he already shows an elite ability to do something, that instantly gets him on the field and he can improve from there

Seems the offense has often been “simple” due to the lack of options/talent/experience at the receiving positions, not because they desire it to be that way. Thinking you will see more variety once there is a group that can complement each other.

Is it me or is Pettis criminally underrated? Pettis just seems like the receiver that goes to Pittsburgh and in year 3 has become a top 5 wr in football. I'd love him in the second to pair with Crabtree and brown.

Per PFF

One thing jumps out immediately when looking at Washington’s route tree – his prowess on the infamous ‘go’ route. It was his most targeted route in 2017, but for good reason indeed. He was targeted a whopping 27 times on ‘go’ routes, and hauled in 11 receptions for 408 yards and averaged a depth of 37.1 yards per target. Not to be lost, though, was Washington’s great first step and ability to separate on slant routes over the middle. He was targeted 11 times, bringing down all 11 of them for 173 yards while averaging a massive 9.3 yards after the catch on slants in 2017. All told, he saw a perfect passer rating of 158.3 on slant routes and an average depth of target of 9.8 yards.

This is really cool.

And hilarious regarding DJ Moore. You look at Gallup and Miller and Wilson etc and they all have great route trees and you look at Moore’s and it’s like 2 lmao. I know he had a million different QBs but damn...
I thought it was cool as well. These types of articles are why I like pro football focus.
In regards to Moore he ran a very limited route tree, from comebacks, slants, crosses and screens, but he has the inate ability to run the entire route tree.
It was also interesting to see he played more on the outside in 2017. You don't really pick that up when watching pieces of game tape throughout the season.

How do we know he has that inate ability to run a wide variety of routes if he doesn’t run anything other than the shallow ones? I haven’t watched DJs film, so I’m unsure about him outside of all the hype. Does it show up on film or is there a possibility that he might not actually be a good route runner even if he had a QB?

You absolutely can see his abilities on film.

I forget just how much fun James Washingtons tape is at times. Going back to 2015/16 hes doing the same shit. Even vs Chidobe Awuzie.

He just wins so consistently. Even if it is against Big12 corners, he still produces well against non conference competition like Vtech last year, and they had a physical secondary

Darren Carrington is a guy thats not being talked about much but has a ton of upside. Has great hands, very strong reliable hands (10 3/8 inch) and good length. Hes going to be a day 3 pick because he had a DUI that got him kicked off Oregon so he finished his career at Utah and still excelled as the peimary target. I dont think a DUI will keep him off our board especially since his hands are his primary bread winner. Which is exactly what weve been looking for.

Daesean Hamilton is a filthy route runner on tape. He creates seperation every time he makes a break on his route. Steve Smith Sr called him a "complete reciever". I like what i see and although he has some inconsitencies on film catching the football he did excellent throughout the draft process between the east/west, senior bowl, combine, and pro day. Impressed at every single venue and has the A+ character to go along with it. Now i see why some call him Baesean

Hamilton is in that double dip category for me, alongside Ishmael and Fountain. I want an early WR and one of them as the double dip.

yeah i agree - if we dont get 2 wr in the first 2 days of the draft then hamilton is a guy who id like us to target early on day 3

So far as draft visits and wideouts, the Ravens are doing a lot with late round and small school guys thus far:
Justin Watson
Brandon Shed??
Daurice Fountain
Jeff Badet

Might as well do extra work on the guys you might not know that much about. Justin Watson did well at the senior bowl. Catches everything

its strategically advantageous if we have no known contact with the guys who we are targeting and who we know everything we need to know anyway
