Baltimore Orioles Discussion (2017 Season)

OBP stands for on base percentage or average and basically it measures how often a player reaches a base. This is the formula: OBP = (Hits + Walks + Hit by Pitch) / (At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies)
Good players tend to have an OBP of .370

ERA stands for earned run average and is the average number of runs given up by a pitcher per 9 innings. (Total # earned runs allowed) / (innings pitched) x 9
A good ERA would be 3.00, but I'm not sure if a lot of pitchers have an ERA close to that right now.

An inning is basically 6 outs. Each team gets 3 and the inning is divided into top and bottom halves, with the home team pitching in the top and batting in the 2nd half. When a pitcher pitches 2/3 of an inning, that means they got 2 outs before they were replaced with another pitcher.

There are a lot of stats in baseball and it's hard to remember what they all mean sometimes.
Hopefully this made sense, I was in a rush this morning. And if I made a mistake, please correct me somebody.

So judging by last night's result, pitching is important.
By far the most important thing in the entire game. If you had 5 amazing starting pitchers and an all star bull pen, you could win games with a high school team hitting for you. The orioles however have the opposite problem. Bundy pitched last night, and he is by far the O's best starting pitcher. Realistically, the O's won't even sniff the playoffs unless the pitching gets A LOT better.

Well, that and they could use more consistent hitting and a much better SS than they have now.

Are good pitchers hard to draft? Like good QBs?
Yes. It's much harder to find quality players at any position in the draft, even in the 1st round. And it may take a couple of years to find out how the draft picks pan out, usually longer than in the NFL, as the players have to work their way up through the minor leagues.

I truly think it's like the Ravens and wide receivers- the Orioles suck at developing them and at finding them.

Dylan Bundy was such a rare talent that you had to really struggle to screw him up... and the Orioles almost did.

poor development in the minors is the biggest problem for the orioles. need to fix it asap or it is pointless to even draft pitchers
