Fire Dean Pees Thread

Hmmm. Biggest detriment to this game. We were blitzing and still couldn’t apply any fucking pressure whatsoever. Admittantly the Steelers have a good oline so that helps but Pees didn’t go soft on us.... we simply got beat by a better team.

There’s plenty I hate about Dean but this game isn’t entirely on him. Denying that is just denial of facts really. We failed to put pressure on the QB despite blitzing a significant amount. That’s not Pees problem.
I think what hurt is that we made the blitzes so obvious and that's not on Pees. Ben used a great hard count and we kept taking the bait. Once you blitz there's no going back. That's a big disadvantage defenses have, offenses can adjust, defenses cannot. The Ravens need to not fall for the hard count so easily and make the blitz so obvious to the point where Ben can adjust protection and there in the soft spots of coverages.

that safety blitz by weddle that turned into sizzle's nearly int was a nice call and a beautifully timed blitz though

Pees dialed up blitzes and used up everything, Mosley playing hurt is a big deal because he was schooled yesterday and kind of ruined anything we wanted to do. I legit think they should rest him for a game even though Cleveland is a must win because at this point he's going to be a liability in coverage.

if we have the 6th seed nailed on by the bengals game maybe we rest CJ in that game but im not sure this front office is gonna not play him unless he cant go until the playoffs are nailed on

Yeah if we seal it by then you would have to sit him because he just looked slow and didn't look like he could move well against Pittsburgh.

Oh boy.... This is gonna be fun. I can't believe I'm in this position where I have to defend this guy. Seriously, I'd much rather Harbaugh be fired and we hire Teryl Austin as the HC.
Yes we've had a lot of injuries that have contributed to some of the defenses problems. Yet despite those injuries to key players, we still are very competitive and can still win games. Injuries are no longer an excuse for Dean anymore, we see players leave in FA for more money, add new ones and still blow 4th quarter leads? Our defense is doing something right if we are having double digits leads at some point during any game. Then the 4th quarter hits and we blow the lead which at that point is not a injury issue or a player issue, it's a scheme issue. You can't even use Jimmy Smith's injury in 2014 for the loss against the Pats because obviously without Jimmy the D was doing good enough to have 2 14 point leads in the game. Despite Jimmy being gone against Pittsburgh last year and last night, we still were containing them enough to have leads.

Also mind you we finished 8-8 in 2013, the Chargers made the playoffs at 9-7. We blew a lead against the Bears lost 23-20. We also had a lead against the Packers that we blew as well. That's 10-6 and in the playoffs in 2013 or even beating the Bears at 9-7 and having the tiebreaker over the Chargers to get in as the 6th seed.

Bullshit. Injuries ARE an excuse. You seriously have the means to tell me that they aren't? Seriously. The packers suck right now. Nothing to do with Aaron Rodgers being gone. Injuries are not a valid reason. Pardon my blunt french. But what the fuck kind of logic is that? I'll give you a hint: It's illogical. This is as logical as you saying that Odell Beckham Jr, one of the three best WRs in the NFL when he's healthy, is overrated and a one trick pony known for one handed catches. Or when you compared Deandre Hopkins to Torrey Smith. Or when you said that Dean Pees is making that FB who scored a TD yesterday look like a "star" when that's ALL that he did. Give me a fucking break. Of course injuries are a detriment. When you have a guy like Jimmy Smith, who was playing at a VERY high level get hurt... EVERY defense is going to suffer even if just for a little bit. You have to change the game plan completey. Factor in the fact that Brandon Williams, CJ Mosley, and others along the defense have been nicked up at points this season... And the defense is the main reason that we are going to make the playoffs. 2015 we lose Joe Flacco, Steve Smith, Suggs, so on and so forth for the year. But no excuse, we should have won the fucking super bowl right. Harbaugh is a failure fire him. We are down two of our starting corners for the year. most teams are going to struggle with that before figuring it out.. If they do at all. Oh btw.. Irony is that the defense actually came alive towards the end of 2015...

Okay then... .I'll play your game.

1. So you use 2013. A year where we have fielded the worst offense ever in the Flacco era. No running game, one WR. A defense that was welcoming brand new additions after a HOF safety left, and a bunch of other core pieces left as well. Sure, we picked up a few good players, but for the most part.. And this is fucking obvious by the way... THE DEFENSE WAS NOT THE PROBLEM IN 2013! AT ALL. The offense was historically bad. If we had fielded a decent offense that season.. No, fuck that... If we had AN offensive line that season we make the playoffs easily. The defense played A role, but they were the main reason we won as many games as we did. The offense was so pourous that season that they probably lost us 2-3 games.. Notice that the defensive additions we made that offseason were minimal at best until the draft. In fact, this season has been VERY similar to 2013. Difference is... The offense was slightly better to begin with(having a running game helps) and the offense might be coming together. You really need to rexamine your priorities if you want to blame Pees for 2013. Pees was hardly the problem that year.

2. Yes.. I can use Jimmy Smith for the 2014 game vs. New England. He's in the game, Brady doesn't exploit the hell out of Melvin.. A dude we literally signed off of someone's practice squad. "But we could have doubled whoever was on his side of the field". Matt Elam played a massive role in some of the big plays Melvin gave up as well. Matt Elam and Melvin.. Sorry, even Wade Phillips, a defensive genius, would be banging his head against the wall with those two out of anger with those two on his team while Josh McDaniels and Brady laugh their asses off targeting him all game. Jimmy Smith is there.. The gameplan is different, and our pass rush gets home more. We most certainly win that game.

"Our defense is doing something right if we are having double digits leads at some point during any game. Then the 4th quarter hits and we blow the lead which at that point is not a injury issue or a player issue, it's a scheme issue." No.. This is false for several reasons.
3. Pertaining to your quote. No.. This is false for several reasons.. We did.. And I repeat. WERE NOT SOFT THE PAST TWO YEARS AGAINST THE STEELERS. We blitzed a significant portion of the time, a very smart play actually. And we still couldn't get to the QB. THAT is a player issue. Not a Pees or scheme issue.

And sure. The defense likely got a few stops to contain him. But this logic is once again, flawed. Want to know why. BECAUSE IT GIVES PEES CREDIT. It implies that his game plan wasn't indeed terrible. Because it isn't. He hasn't really switched to prevent recently, and did not do it against the steelers. I forget who said it but someone was right. We decided to press Brown a little more often than we should have while blitzing. An aggressive play. In fact, a good one. But then for whatever reason we start fucking up in the fourth quarter. Pass rush never gets home, defensive backs blow their assignments.. Player issue. Players need to do their assignments.

4. Yes. Pees was flawed yesterday.. But football is a team sport damnit. While the Lions share of the blame should rightfully go to the defense.. In fact, Pees himself does have a hand in this. Offense had a few fuckups that contributed to the loss. Marty's situational football was terrible(even though overall he called a pretty good game. In fact. If he keeps it up, we can keep him for all I care). Patriots, Flacco threw a costly interception. Last season our recievers put a lot of plays on the ground. This time, Flacco interception, shit situational playcalling, Maclin's spot on Lee Evans impression play a role.

It's a player issue. Players not executing has been a massive problem here. It's not a coincidence that the defense has been better this year than years previously... We have players that usually haven't fucked up this season. Yesterday and the Jacksonville games were the only real exceptions to this rule. The defense is easily the reason we are in playoff contention. Dean doesn't deserve all of the credit for this.... But he does deserve some.

And yes, I'd much rather have an aggressive guy like Pagano here.. But I think the defense can figure some shit out. The schedule is easy and we should win at least two of these games *knock on wood*.

For what it's worth, I'd much rather have Pees retire. I'm sick of the bitching.

Let's soften the tone a bit. I appreciate the fact that the conversation has remained subject-relevant, but there's way too much anger at the moment.

All I know is someone has to go if we miss the playoffs again. I'm pretty sure Ozzie and Steve are as pissed as we are about not beating Pittsburgh again when we had them beat. The entire focus on defense was because of the Christmas loss to Pittsburgh. Yes players do not execute and that's a problem but in general coaching has been a problem since we won the Super Bowl in 2012. Both offensively and defensively, we've gotten rid of OCs for lack of offense. Yeah we could fire Dean and start a similar cycle on D and bring in a new DC every other year.

But at some point, it falls back on the HC. You can only use the OC and DC as scapegoats for so long until it finally hits and Harbs is the one fired. I don't see any quit on Harbs from the players so he's likely coming back, and with Pees likely retiring we will have 2 new coordinators.

harbs looked angry at today's press conference - you have to think that if either the offence or defence stutter as units again at this point in the year and cost us a game we cant afford to lose that one or both of them are getting canned - ive seen harbs angry a couple of times this season after abject performances by one side of the ball or the other

If we miss the playoffs then Pees and Marty need to be fired. No ifs ands or buts. Harbough should then be on a one year make it or break situation, where if we miss the playoffs again he goes.

id rather not get rid of harbs but it would be pretty egregious not to make the playoffs at this point given the tomato cans we have left on the schedule

I might be the only one who thinks this but when are we going to stop using Jimmy as an excuse for our season going to flames? This is the 3rd time it's happened. When you have a guy like Jimmy who has had 2 season ending injuries prior to this year and has played a 16 game season twice, then you have to be more prepared for his absence. It's like we never learn how to adjust from his absence even though more often then not, he's not here for these type of games. Literally, the guy just goes down at the worst time.

550 yards and no turnovers doesn't mean Pees gets exempt from blame, even with the personnel we have right now. I think execution has to be a primary focus and these players need to do better, but when Jimmy keeps going down like this then as a HC/DC you have to be more prepared.

I just want to know, if Jimmy goes down again next year, are we going to make the same excuse when things go bad?

Jimmy and Young went down. There was a plan in place. Just like there was a plan in place for the G position, but now we're on our 4th or 5th one. Marlon was the security for the secondary, but the truth is the Steelers are loaded on offense. Combine talented WRs, with godlike RB, speed TEs, holding OL and one of the fattest, most nimble qbs and any team might struggle. Steelers have a 11 wins for a reason and we were still inches away from possibly winning.

Until this team can consistently generate pressure, not much will change against the Steelers.

Off topic. I'm watching Belichick and you'd swear he was HC of the Browns or that he was on the hot seat.

Let me also make this very clear. I'm not here trying to defend him. I'm more on the side of the guys need to perform better, but I don't give a damn if he's fired. Just fire him for the right reasons. That to me, is only if someone better is available.

I don't think they're loaded with JuJu out. Brown alone had 213 yards, McDonald/James combined at 149, and Bell added 77 so that left 67 yards to Bryant and Rodgers. Bryant is a low-end #2 at this point and Rodgers isn't worth mentioning as a starting WR.

I think Brown is the only talented WR worth mentioning. Their TE's? They combined for 337 yards prior to Sundays game. I'll give you Bell and their OL, but while they did a great job in the passing game, we did manage to hold them in check in the run game outside of those TD runs. With that said, with the personnel we have, we shouldn't allow 550 yards to happen regardless. I would understand if Martavis was the guy we saw prior to his suspensions and if JuJu wasn't suspended, but that's just not the case here. The defense was just a flat out embarrassment Sunday and I think everyone is accountable for it. Not to mention the excuse for Jimmy being out is just becoming tiring.

You mentioned the absence of our starting and back up guards but they are not mostly responsible for our offense having a bad year. Even without Yanda and Lewis, we have run the ball better now then we have in the past two years. In fact, some of the breakdowns in terms of penetration and pressure were hardly on the inside guards as they were on the outside tackles last game. \

We've seen Pees make some great adjustments late in the season, I just hope he manages to do that because this isn't 2014. You have a way better group to work with in the secondary.

Pees said in retrospect he should have had Humphrey shadow Brown. :brickwall: That information would have been useful to me yesterday!

Pees just admitted he should have humph cover brown

What I find funny about this is that Pees seems to hate moving the corners out of their normal spots. Seems like a pretty simple option, especially when he's lined up outside. Probably would have seen huge lapses in communication. Sometimes you need to simplify your game plan or build outs into it.
