2018 Free Agency

This is a cool link. Unless I'm misreading (quite possible), we would, after cutting McLellan, Webb, Howard, Maclin and Levine, find ourselves with more than 22 million in cap space...do you read the same?

that's before extending CJ and Jimmy which would add more cap space too

Why extend Jimmy Smith? Seems sure to be a mistake as he can't seem be counted on. I would not push spending down the road for him even if he does carry a large hit this year. I'd sooner trade for the right offer and two plus million.

all you have to do is level out his cap hit - doesnt mean he stays for the whole contract - but his cap hit the next 2 years is astronomical and prohibitive... jimmy smith currently has the highest 2 year cap hit in the league for the next 2 years... if we extend him and lower his average then we give ourselves so much more cap to work with

Are cap ramifications the same under trade scenario?

Just today, I checked out a list of possible 2018 free agents and was somewhat shocked out how many quality players there may be available.

@RavensMania No one is undervaluing Jarvis Landry’s talent. That’s basically the majority of what Landry was used for and thus that’s why he’s not impossible to replace. He’s a very good slot receiver. But not a 14 million dollar WR. @ me next time

I would love someone like Allen Robinson as much as anyone, but I feel like we will settle for someone like Crabtree and I’m fine with that.

Yes this is correct. Not sure you’d want to cut Levine though. He was really valuable in our dime packages.

Also correct.

I agree, he’s not worth that much money, but it’s not easy to replace his talent level either. The fins will most likely have a drop off.

They will need to get very creative with this one to ensure we don’t take it where the sun don’t shine. What a screwed up situation.

That's great.. Hey Ozzie.. Can we do something here too? Please. Honestly we'd be one of the more balanced units in the league if you actually fucking addressed the offense as a primary focus for once.

I'd take any of the following if at all available.

Jarvis Landry
Sammy Watkins
Terrell Pryor
Allen Robinson
Marqise Lee(he's not gonna be a #1 imo.. But he could be a lot better in a less conservative offense)
Paul Richardson(could be a big play #2 guy. His deep speed isn't what was advertised.. But he's been solid)
John Brown(perhaps a change of scenery could do him well)
Taylor Gabriel(likely going to SF to reunite with Kyle)

This is a position we HAVE to address in both FA and the draft. I don't give a fuck if we have to pay top dollar for an Allen Robinson. If we have to, do it. Even with the defensive shortcomings we need playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. I don't give a shit if Allen Robinson is our #1 WR and we resign Wallace.. If Calvin Ridley is on the board as well, we need to fucking take him.

As far as I'm concerned, if I'm Ozzie. There are a few positions in FA we need to address.

1. WR. Duh. We need multiple of these this offseasons. We need to find a #1 WR. Do it in Fa. There are options here that could prove to be that.
2. CB. Brandon Carr was solid, but I'd rather let him go and go get a Kyle Fuller, or a Prince Amukamara. We need another guy since our defense appears to be SO dependent on Jimmy, who is unlikely to recover fully in time for the next season. Ross Cockrell would not be a bad get either.
3. DT. PASS RUSHER. Cowboys might be prepared to let David Irving walk. SIGN HIM. Shouldn't be overly expensive. Daquon Jones is a nice jack of all trades type guy. Tom Johnson is a pressure machine in the middle even though he doesn't do much else. This would be a massive get.
4. LB. ILB, OLB. Don't care. Address defense in FA(except WR), offense in the draft .

Why need CB even if we part with Carr? It's not just Jimmy coming back, it's also Tavon coming back and along with Humphrey and Canady getting another year under the belt. Honestly the CB isn't just fine we might have too many talented bodies to get them all the playing time they deserve WITHOUT signing someone.

Have you not seen how dependent the defense has been on Jimmy over the past few seasons. Sure, Tavon coming back helps and we have a new coordinator, but we are going to need another quality body for when Jimmy inevitably goes down.

Both Tavon and Humphrey actually did an okay job filling in for Jimmy, the problem was always the other side. Now you have BOTH who can fill in that role and I'm not worried about when Jimmy goes down.

Now if 2 of 3 then yes that is cause for concern and might be why we keep Carr, but we already have far too many great corners who deserve snaps who won't get them, why make that worse?

As a top slot receiver, he's definitely worth 12. I doubt he gets more but who knows, desperate team might overpay.
A team might overpay since he can be let go and I think he leaves. Miami is in such an awful cap situation right now so their chances of keeping Landry right now are not in their favor. Even if they backload his deal massively it's still going to be very tough.
