2018 Free Agency

He has talent though. He's very explosive and stupidly quick, he's gonna come mad cheap so I'd like to see him get some looks in the slot assuming we don't have any other slot options, which we likely won't. Get him some short touches, try to get him involved with drags and quick inside slants and the occasional deep seam to see if he can make a safety bite and get over the top, a guy with his athletic ability always has a chance to produce, he just needs the right environment and the right mindset, he could find that in Baltimore.

the problem is he's not a great route runner so he's not really a great fit for the slot either - he's a guy id want coming on an end around or maybe in a screen or going deep off RPO but he's not gonna win particularly often in other situations

He’s improved big time and I think this speaks volumes to Howard’s status on the team. Maybe Alex Lewis makes a move to RT? Idk but I can’t say I’m big on the news.

Don’t worry about total dollar amount of Hursts contract. He will never see all if it. Probably be cut in a couple yrs. better to sign a decent backup that is familiar with the offense than someone who isn’t familiar with romans scheme. Hurst was very good at move blocks

He’s cheap so this is ultimately a nothingburger cap wise but I’ll be mad if we are content with Hurst at LG when he was a weak link.

this is what's bugging me about the contract value - it seems to pay him roughly what he's worth i guess so its not that bad but it also seems to expect him to play which obviously isnt ideal if we want to improve the oline play...

if we could trust him to play right tackle id be ok with that but he's only shown value at guard (an area where the draft class is strong)

This is why I’m fuming. The oline needs to improve and just being content with Hurst is absurdly idiotic. If we don’t address the oline then Ozzie can fuck right off Into retirement and just let Eric take over.

Very curious to see how this factors in with Lewis and Howard. Seemingly puts Howard on the outs with Lewis or Hurst sliding to T. Hurst was actually a big part of the OL resurgence last year so hopefully they keep him at G. Hated the guy as a T but maybe he should been inside at G the whole time.

im hoping that what this means is that howard is gonna be cut, alex lewis moved to right tackle and then an open competition for the interior open spots where hurst's contract doesnt preclude us from adding more talent because his contract likely involves a lot of playing time incentives i imagine
- only 8 mill guaranteed - id be ok if hurst ended up being backup at guard and tackle and played the 6th lineman too

and while its not the sexy move i think most of us wanted at oline i will say this - james hurst at left guard played pretty well - he was an asset in the run game once he got comfortable pulling across the oline and he was mostly ok against the pass - he was ok and ultimately i think we got fairly good value on this contract

that being said ill be pissed if this is the only oline move we make and we get to camp and he's the prohibitive starter and there's no competition for that left guard spot

He’s good depth and probably won’t be with us that long. Just lowers his cap hit due to guaranteed money being spread out longer.
He played pretty decent last season which is why i dnt understand how people were calling him the worst ever during last years trainning camp and offseason

James Hurst ain't worth $4 million a year at any position. I've been one of Hurst's strongest defenders but this is bad deal. He doesn't have the feet for tackle or the power for guard.

I think they think the opposite. Lewis at guard. Hurst at RT.
I'd rather this than the other way around. In the preseason, Hurst actually looked damn good at RT, and I was fucking pissed they moved him to LG. Didn't make sense to have weak ass Hurst at LG and slow ass Howard at RT.
