2018 Free Agency

Random thought but i figured to put it here:

Should we seriously consider finding a trade partner for Jimmy Smith. I mean hes comming off an achilles injury and is owed more money than hes worth at this point in his career. I dont really expect him to be the dominant player he used to be and we have so much young talent at corner with Carr being the dependable, durable vet we need to mentor these kids.

We need Jimmys cap space more than we need him at this point

I am legit going to kill someone

Basically the only two you can respect on that site

What??? I know he’s a good pass blocker and Jensen is also a better pass blocker than Ron blocker, but I don’t see Lewis as a center at all.

i only posted this because i thought it was interesting that they both had the same thought (being as they are the only reasons anyone should or would read stuff on that site) - that being said its pure conjecture based on what theyve been seeing not on any insider stuff

Hurst is a good backup. If we are relying on him as a starter then this move is utterly foolish.

Please prove me wrong Ozzie.... the line overachieved last season. It won’t happen again. Fix this damn line
You aren't making any sense.

If there was one unit on the team that played mostly OK last season, it was our O line. They are well coached group, protected Flacco for the most part and made things happen in running game. Why is that called overachievement? We are also getting back two starters from a previous year, one of which is perennial all pro, who lifts the play of two guys on his shoulders as well. Siragusa, if he recovered, needs to be looked at. JE should improve, too.

We can't sign Jensen but we need to bring Norwell? How?

Hurst is dirt cheap, serviceable player at 2 positions. What's the problem?

impossible - we lose cap space if we trade or release him... the only way we get more cap space out of jimmy smith is if we extend him - either that or we just eat his cap hit for this year and then he becomes cuttable/tradable next year - but there is no way that jimmy smith financially can not be on this team this year...

if im honest i want them to extend jimmy (hopefully bring down both his yearly average and his cap hit - or even keep the max value of the yearly average the same but fill up that contract value with gameday bonuses and snap counts etc.)

I'm with you here. I think we'll be more than fine on the OL as it currently stands. Is there room for improvement? Sure, especially at C where I worry about Skura's ability to anchor due to his lack of strength. I'm definitely not doom and gloom about this unit, though.

i was initially bummed out but ive seen the contract numbers (not the details tbf) and they've eased my mind no end - we have quality healthy depth and a guy who improved through the year and was at worst serviceable starting at left guard - we got him for a fair deal that's easy to get out of and isnt expensive even at max value - id rather we improved the position but as long as this contract isnt gifting him the starting spot (and he has to earn it again) then im fine with this contract - i mean ideally he's the 6th olineman (which would suit him given the way we can use him to pull across) who can fill in anywhere along the line in a pinch except centre...

as an unfinished revamp of the unit - this is not a bad start... but as i said earlier the way the rest of the offseason goes probably dictates how i feel about this move - but ill say this for certain... id rather have james hurst on that deal than not have him

If siragusa is healthy and ends up looking like he did prior to injury, I think he will the favorite to start at center.

We can't waste time and money improving decent position bound to get better with returning starters. What little cap room we make needs to be spent on pass catchers - we have literally none.

The Hurst signing is fucking moronic, we just cant seen to rid ourselves of this bum ass mook, being able to pull does not make up for a complete lack of anchor or functional strength. Watch him fill in at tackle again and get Joe murdered again.

1. We can afford to bring Jensen back but he's going to get significantly overpaid. Jensen was one of the overrated players within the fanbase last year and if we were to spend a lot of money on any olinemen, it should be Norwell. Which we can afford. If we're "Hot for Robinson" we can afford Norwell too. And frankly, I'd rather pay a ton for Norwell. He's not as sexy as Robinson, but does more for the offense. Especially for Collins, who is our best player on offense at this point.

2. We played pathetic teams towards the stretch. In fact a lot of bad teams in general. Our schedule next year is tougher. Our oline struggled at times too... When we played good teams. Just saying. Losing our C, and keeping our two weakest links on the oline.. Bad idea. Sure, Yanda is coming back which is a boost. But if we settle for Skura and Hurst as starters... We are screwed. Against better dlinemen, they're going to be washed out in the run game... Which is what our entire offense goes through. I don't trust Skura calling the protections either. We need to get big upgrades on the interior. Which is doable but my biggest fear right now is that we are content with Skura and Hurst and are just going to shell out all kinds of dinero for weapons while letting the oline go under.

3. JE may have physical tools but is rawer than sushi. I would not count on him developing at all. His technique.. Horrible. Siragusa.. I actually agree with. I hope he pans out but with that injury I'm not totally sure.

We damn well better send a higher pick on an olinemen. We do not need the offseason the Giants had last year.

except doesnt this allow us to release austin howard? - hurst's cap hits would have to be weirdly structured for us not to open more cap space by signing hurst and releasing howard...

Just your daily reminder that Steve himself said we are doing restructures and we will open up cap that way. Doesn't matter whether you want it that way or not. It's going to happen. We will have room. And not all of it should be spent on pass catches, though some of it should be.

also look at the bucs go - they've just brought back 2 of their own guys already - cameron brate 6 years 41 mill and brent grimes going back too

Adam Shefter on NFL live:

“What if I told you Ravens C Ryan Jensen will be the highest paid Center in the league?”

Get ready folks. Jensen’s gonna get paidddd
