2018 Free Agency

Honestly this isn't homerism, I think grant will surprise... I liked wha I saw everytime I watched the skins
Hopefully. Sounds like he’s got potential, if he’s runs good routes and has good hands that’s an automatic upgrade and I’ll take it.

I'm not big on the deal. I like what I saw the few times I've watched him play. Sure hands, tough, YAC, and finds the soft spots(Always could use someone like that). I'm not a fan of what we paid him but I don't think I can complain given the circumstances. This is the best we could do and it's better then nothing.

With Robinson and Landry gone I guess some people expect the FO to just sit on this FA market.

I’m not gonna get too worked up until the draft comes.

That is, until we go all defense again. Then I’ll freaking go ballistic.

Ryan Grant would be a good pick up imo if not for the price tag. He has good hands and runs decent routes. Not flashy, but the WR market sucks and the FO clearly felt some heat. Could he break out? Sure, he won't ride the bench like he did behind guys like Desean Jackson, Garcon, Pryor and Dotson.

I've always been against "change for the sake of change" as a matter of principle and this move reeks of it, but either he'll suck or he'll be fine. These are the kind of chances that a team can take that will look good if it works out and look dumb if it doesn't.

And that's my problem. It's not better than nothing. Somethings doing nothing is better than reaching. If this is how it's going to play out, take you chances in the draft and let the young guys battle it out, but now, you may feel obligated to let these new guys play instead seeing what we might have.

I'd rather fucking let the cap roll over to next year at this point than sign another WR. We'll just fuck that up too.

I'm going to bed. This team has just become more inept with each passing year. We'll fuck up the draft too.

Empty seats will be the common theme and M & T

We have more cap flexility next season. Look, all the teams with the least payrolls. They're mostly consisted of failing franchises. While the more successful teams are either at the bottom or middle of the pack at best. Also, signing Ryan Grant doesn't mean that we're going to neglect the WR position in the draft. We're surely drafting one in the 1st two rounds in fact I'll say that we could come away with as many as three total on draft day.

i think a trade is in the works. were either looking at a TE, WR, or OL. theres no way we go into the draft like this.

i also get this odd feeling jensen might come back. we thought ray rice was gonna hit the market back in 2013 when it was dead quiet then BAM extension, we thought brandon williams was good as gone til his market stalled. why else wouldnt jensen already be locked in? the top C on the market should be getting money thrown at him but i think hes being valued less than expected and may be considering a return to see what we cough up. or maybe were keeping it close and letting him test the market with the idea that we can match a reasonable number. gut feeling. probably wrong but eh.

if we are able to re-sign jensen then we might actually be looking at a respectable early FA period by "ravens standards"

When I saw the Grant signing I thought, "Who is this guy?" Then I thought, Its OK - I'll come to the flock and people will be saying, "Man - you never heard of him? He's the bomb! "

Not so much.

Ok ive gone and just watched a crap ton of ryan grant film so here's a few things ive noticed:
  1. He runs some slick routes - he has a nice hybrid of being sharp in his breaks as well as sudden but also having the nouse to find the soft spot and using his body and speed in the right way to get there - one of his more impressive plays was for a 20 yard td but he mostly jogged his way through the zone using slight movements to get himself wide open... that being said he does have a lot of quickness both in short-area burst as some decent looking top end speed (hard to tell how fast but on a few occasions he absolutely swallowed up the cushion of a covering safety and blew past them)
  2. He's taller than i expected given what i saw on the film - he's 6 ft which isnt huge but he seems to play smaller sometimes when he's running routes - but then he looks bigger when he's blocking in the run game - it's a weird dichotomy that i cant really work out at the moment
  3. He has good hands
for what ive seen on the film so far he looks a little underused by the redskins but that does make some sense given that they have jamison crowder already there so he was fighting for snaps out of the slot

here are some of my issues with the pickup (mostly systemic rather than the player himself):
  • im not in love with the amount of money we've given him - i can see why the ravens targeted him but we are banking on him ascending and continuing his upward trend while probably featuring him more than the redskins did
  • which leads me onto my other issue - part of the reason i was hot on moncrief is that he's a larger player out of the slot who's physical moving downfield which is traditionally what the ravens' most successful slot guys have done - we've never really featured inside routes on this offence so schematically i worry that he's a bit of a square peg in a round hole (that being said woodhead and campanaro towards the end of the year were featured more in the passing game in an effective way so maybe there's a more overt philosophy change going on in terms of the type of route concepts we run)
i do kind of wonder whether the ravens are taking a leaf out of the vikings book and realising that you can create an effective passing game out of smaller shifty guys and that you dont necessarily need size (which is inherently more expensive in the nfl)

and harbs wasnt lying i guess when he emphasised that we were gonna go and get guys who can catch the ball - ive only seen 1 drop from grant on the film ive seen so far and it was good defence tbh by the defender who swiped the ball out of his hands as he was bringing it in towards his body as he went to the ground...

this deal could be brilliant - i dont think its as risky as i first thought but there's certainly a decent enough chance that grant could fizzle and underachieve for the amount given his lack of targets and production - based on what ive seen though there's definitely a chance that this could turn into a really good deal

im not happy with the day's work from the ravens but having watched the tape i feel good about the 2 players we've added (even if im not happy with the money)

I'm hoping you're not trolling most of the board members because you're going to get a lot of hate thrown your way if you are lol

No I promise I'm not. I root for you guys except when you play us. I see Ryan Grant signed with you guys, good signing.

This front office is fucking insane. They used to be good, but it's crazy how out of touch they are now. They clearly can't identify talent well at all. Browns fine, but Hurst and Grant are two of the worst contracts I've ever seen there's no way any other team would have come close to those numbers. This front office doesn't even know how to negotiate and just shoved boatloads of money at the first receiver who would actually come here. Throwing away money that we really don't even have, for a guy that's maybe an average starter. Unless they absolutely kill it in the draft, this seems like the year when the Ravens will finally crash. And now it's going to be even worse with more bad long term contracts and significant cap relief nowhere in sight.

First of all, if Grant turns out to be an average starter...7.25 million a year will look great.

I'm pretty sure half you bums loved the Maclin pick up as a GREAT move with this same "watch and see" attitude...

ive always been honest about it - i did love the maclin move at the time - im not revisionist about these things
and im unsure at the moment about today's moves
