Are there any combinations of later picks where you guys would be ok taking Penning at 14?
My favorite asset of paschal is the way he can explode laterally. He’s got real DT power and leg drive but he has ABSURD ability to get around an interior offensive lineman with lateral explosiveness
He’s a big projection. There’s a lot to like and a lot to dislike, and if his style isn’t your cup of tea then He’s easy to hate. I’ll try my best to be objective here…
Upside:
-Built incredibly well, long, dense, muscular, prototype OT build
-feet are surprisingly quick
-looks like he can drop to nfl rusher depth
-extremely powerful, generates an insane amount of just raw “fuck out my face” type power with seemingly no effort at times
-one false move and he will pancake your asshole to smithereens, in pass protection as well, guys that don’t time their bend/counter attempt often end up getting their shit rocked into the dirt.
-fairly natural athlete and has the
Downside
-he moves fairly well but really lumbers and needs big time agility and flexibility training, think Ben Cleveland at OT. He might not be an nfl caliber OT if he doesn’t improve those things and that’s not easy
-poor anchor against a good speed to power rush, he frequently fails to absorb the blow because he just can’t get low enough and he gets driven back surprisingly often
-upright player in general unless he’s leaning forward on a DT
-plays with wide hands
-often prioritizes “being a badass” over making the best play for the team, he’ll miss a combo block or a blitz pickup to drive someone to the ground if he has the chance and does this shit an alarming amount, often after the whistle on irrelevant defenders. Guarantee he’s getting raked on the gameday threads for it when he’s inevitably here

Athletically I did come off harsh lol, he is very stiff thoughi think maybe you've been a little harsh on him athletically lol - think a lot of his range issues are related to technique and pad level
obviously the potential penalty issues are a question but i think you'd prefer to try and reign in someone's aggression vs trying to actually get guys to actively finish or find some nasty (like ben cleveland... who for all his big country toughness isnt actually that nasty of a player lol) - and i do get the sense that penning's not an actual head-case so i do think he'll be able to control that instinct
but as you say there's just a lot of stuff that either needs honing or straight up fixing - and it's not that he cant fix those things, it's that we dont know if he will and it feels like not the kind of prospect you take with a top 15 pick
Athletically I did come off harsh lol, he is very stiff though
That makes me feel a little better I guess. I'm starting to get that vibe that we take Penning though.i mean he's not gonna be in my top 14 players - likely wont even be in my top 19 either
so there's no point where id be happy with him at 14
but id be ok with it ultimately regardless of who we hit later - this isnt the raiders taking clelin farrell or anything like that or the raiders taking alex leatherwood or the raiders taking damon arnette or the raiders taking kolton miller...
It’s happening. Brace yo self. lol
I’ve been a well known anti penning guy lol but if we do take him there’s plenty of upside to be excited about. If he pans out to his best he’s an absolute game changer at the most important spot on the OL and dramatically expands your playbook, run game, and pass game as well as being a tone setter identity kinda player, at worst, he’s probably a middling LG who we let walk after 5 yearsThat makes me feel a little better I guess. interesting about mcduffie and booth
Understandable but that guy shouldnt be relying on pff snap count.. without even knowing that you can see that mcduffie does in fact look more like a zone cb when you watch him.. not to mention mcduffie is thought of as a 1st rmder and i dnt believe booth is, so ofcourse one is gonna question his ability more
"Steelers Colbert on Monday expressed a willingness to move up and down the draft board, indicating that his team would calculate the value of every spot in the draft. But he also mentioned two specific spots: "We'll guesstimate what it'll cost to move from 20 to 7 and from 20 back down to 32," Colbert said."
I tell you... if we were picking in the 20s, I'd be banging the table for Zion Johnson with the idea of moving him to C. Came across a cut up on Twitter again today and good lord that guy feels as safe as it gets.
Yeah I should have clarified there. Safe as it comes at G but would try him at C with the idea that I know I have a good G at a minimum.idk that i buy him as instant coffee at C
but at G, yeah, he's about as safe as it gets
the guy im really interested in at C right now is Nick Ford, Utah - hardly seen his name mentioned anywhere, came across him almost by accident looking through my list and saw his size profile and not horrible RAS and thought id give him a look to see if i could find a 10th C prospect to watch...
and i really really like him lol - powerful, has some length, great anchor, flashes of decent feet and surprising short-area agility, good processor, nasty finisher - like he's not perfect at all and has some inconsistencies with his hand usage and in pass pro his feet and his hands can be not working in tandem together
but he's a great fit in a power scheme, has the power to be able to displace nose tackles, plays with good leverage and torque, has violent hands and punch and length as well as some recovery ability in pass pro, nasty and has surprising success working up to L2...
i literally have no idea why this dude wasnt invited to the combine and why no one on draft twitter seems to have ever even mentioned him - i even googled his name with lots of different legal issues to see if there was anything in his background and all i found, lol, was him being a conference leader in the pandemic lobbying players to get better protections from the conference lol
maybe im missing something and overhyping him but i would 100% spend a 4th round pick on this dude and give him to Joe D and see what he can do with him - at worst he's a 3 position backup
lol estimate the cost to 7? Your entire draft

Have watched none of Ford and probably won't get to him but obviously trusting your judgment lol
