‘Wink’ is the New Defensive Coordinator

Main reason for discontent is we don't really know what is Wink's vision as a DC. I have no reason to hate promoting a coach loved by the players, that has produced results in the development of young guys (Mosley, Orr, Judon) and that is familiar with the organization. I simply ask for better use of the personnel and more interior pass rush.

IMO our linebackers regressed this year in pass coverage and had difficulty even covering slow tight ends .

Considering Wink was the linebackers coach , I’m a little surprised he got the DC job

You thought performance in another role would affect him getting a promotion? This is Harbaugh we're talking about.

I don't think it's his fault for that. Mosley has never been and will probably never be able to stick with TE in man coverage and Peanut can get boxed out way too easily. However Judon has been surprisingly good in that department and Bowser is promising to say the least. A lot of those TE problems comes from Jefferson making mistakes or being lost in coverage actually, which may happen but hopefully he'll correct that next year (he definitely can).

Wink is a good coach, I'm confident in that. What remains to be seen is his play calling and his usage of the group he'll be given.

it will be another bama player. let me go on the record now that i am not a calvin ridley fan and if it's him i will be very dissapointed.
Who do you want? Ridley is a great WR talent and my only real complaint on him is his size. He’s got the hands for the most part and his routes are really nice. I do worry abouthat him holding up an entire season. I really like Sutton a lot. Curious to hear who you want.

I have to believe that the only reason we're going with Wink is because Pagano didn't want to come back to coaching right away. Otherwise, I think this move would have been announced earlier.

Either way, I'm disappointed like probably most of us, but let's see what happens. Hopefully, Wink surprises us all and leads a great defense.

looks like a worse version of amari cooper and that's not great value. he's also 24 by the start of the season. He just aint special at all...diggs was a better prospect in my eyes those few years ago and went in round 5.

Yep, but really this is Harbaugh’s last stand . No playoffs next year and he is fired .
I am not sure of that. If we finish 9-7 again and miss the playoffs and have more injuries to use as an excuse, do you think Steve would definitely fire his buddy? Maybe he would if fans support gets any worse.

I believed that Pagano was the new DC and he was just waiting for Pagano to say yes. Now I believe Wink was the plan all along. Harbs hoodwinked us and delayed the decision so there wouldn't be as much push back as when we just lost to Cincy.

Ridley has fantastic hands, he’s nothing like cooper and I don’t care about his age. Maybe that makes him more mature.

If wink runs more 1 gap, and simplifies the assignments for guys like Jefferson, gets better use of his talents(getting Timmy and bowser on the field and letting edge rushers edge rush), and if he has better situational play calling and doesn't put players in a position to fail(like the final play call against cinci) then I'll be happy.

I just don't see it happening though, this just REEKS of harbaughs classic more of the same mentality

I just think Pees was set in his ways. Wink may be more flexible to try different things. I’m trying to remain positive.

I hope so, but with the way we have coached our defenders all these years it feel like there is a strong system firmly locked in place and harbaugh will continue to demand it. If an edge rusher can't also set the edge and stuff the run he doesn't see the field, if a good penetrating DT can't 2 gap at a high level then he is benched in favor of NTs, square pegs round holes and all that. I'm so sick of seeing edge rushers being converted to LBs and can't see the field if they can't play well in all 3 phases. Everson Griffen can't cover but he's one of the best sack artists in the league, and that's just one small example there are plenty of edge rushers who just edge rush, why the fuck can't we have that? We have the talents for it, we just refuse to use them.

Supposedly he has an aggressive mentality and is best friends with Rex and Rob Ryan If that means anything. I’d love a more 1 gap approach.

Yeah, that shit needs to stop. They let Doom just rush the passer when he was here (at least before injuries to other players) so not sure why they won't let anyone else. Not every player needs to be well-rounded in all areas if they could be exceptional in one key aspect, like pass-rushing, which the team sorely needs more of.

For real. Like, I hate to harp on Antwan Barnes, but the guy could pass rush and once had an 11 sack year with SD. We know he couldn't do anything else, but why not let him do the one thing he could do? We knew Paul Kruger couldn't cover and that he sometimes struggled with contain, but why not put a motor like that out there on third and long? Lordy, we know Tim Williams isn't there yet as a run stopper, but could we please let him hound quarterbacks, which is what he was put on earth to do?

We have a consistent track record of benching pass rushers who can't stop the run regardless of down, distance, and need for pass rush. This is my only real complaint of John Harbaugh-era defenses. We've had a lot of defenders who are explosive and disruptive, but we don't play them. Defense is about fucking shit up and we don't let out guys fuck shit up.

This actually concerns me a bit. Hopefully they agree on front seven philosophies but disagree strongly on the merits of press man cover 0. Lol.

I like your take on this, fucking shit up and all.
