Okay so a few of us have seen it and are chomping at the bit to talk about it. So I am taking the liberty to start a thread. If you don't want to know, don't click or read any further. Warning right now, NO SPOILERS HIDDEN.

I think Luke was a bit of a baby and kinda all over the map. One would think a Jedi Master would have his feelings and emotions a bit more in check.

I didn't know they had finished filming before the passing of Carrie Fisher. At first I thought they wrote her out well.
It seems Kylo was unaware she survived. I wonder what they are going to do with all that.
I still don't think Rey is the offspring of Luke.
I say Yoda in jest and the would be epic.
I wonder if she isn't some sort of created being.
They talk about virgin birth in one of the pre-quils.

The movie, I loved it. Not my favorite, but it was fantastic. It laid the groundwork for a good bit of longevity.

I loved it, probably the Star Wars movie I enjoyed the most (also the only one I saw in a theater in real movie condition, and btw the theater was fantastic).

I'm not one for "Gnnnnn this is not coherent with this and that" so I don't care about what means what for the rest of the saga. This was a great movie, a few hiccups here and there (the treatment allowed to Finn is just weak) but just seeing the evolution of Kylo Ren, Rey and Luke in this movie was awesome. Kylo Ren went from 0 to 100 in this movie. From whinning b*tch to a great, complex and moving character.

If I'm being honnest with myself I feel like Kylo Ren is a better version of the prelogy Anakin.

The fighting scenes are truly great and intense, and the one man stand from Luke at the end, OMG I tripped.

If they cut out that casino planet section and the whole Fin-Rose arc, as well as slightly fixing up the opening scenes It would almost be perfect.

I was really hoping it would allow Kylo and Ray to go off on their own, not alligned with either side but they of course had to make it the good/bad generic split

Yeah, that seemed a bit too extra.
It was probably for a reason we will find out later.
I think the guy with the broach will be back.

So, my mom's boyfriend said he refuses to watch Star Wars because they're all the same.

I haven't seen the originals in quite a while, but I thoroughly enjoyed these two movies and didn't feel they were simply the same movie, per say.

The Force Awakens was really similar to A New Hope, which is my only problem with it.

I've enjoyed the new ones, though.

for me i didnt mind the canto bight section because of what it meant for poe's character development but i wish the execution of that sequence had been better - the cgi, the actual plot in that section and the writing were most definitely the weakest part of the film but i ultimately forgive that because it helps make the grand thematic points of the film work - i.e. that greatness and heroism can and should be self-made rather than some prophetic right and that leadership often needs to be made out of calmness and with an eye to the future and the importance of survival over other things - so i wouldnt want the casino stuff taken out but i do wish it was executed better

and i dont think the kylo ren rey alignment is necessarily out of the realm of possibility - she obviously has a pull to the darkside and she and kylo linked even after
snoke died
- i think episode 9's focus especially given the way the galaxy is set up has to revolve around their relationship even moreso than before - particularly given the emphasis on balance that this film has

given that the guy with the broach was played in a camoe by justin theroux and lily rose was the woman at his side i absolutely dont think he ever comes back - i think the unnamed DJ character played by benecio del toro is much more likely to return

i loved the portrayal of luke in this film - for me the biggest fault of the prequels was making emotion a tool against the jedi which made them weaker and naturally unlikeable and luke has never not been emotional so i loved the fact that his seclusion comes about because of his failure and he stays there because his own weakness has mentally destroyed him because of how it reflects upon him - to the extent that he essentially rejects the force and closes himself off from it - i think it made his acts at the end of the film all the more heroic because it was him accepting his own failures and resolving them with his heroism and weaknesses and victories from the original trilogy and finding his own personal balance again -
i think the way he died was the perfect ending because of how peaceful and purposeful it was - and it was what i think as star wars fans we needed after this long since return of the jedi: we needed to see luke be a hero just one more time and i honestly think it was perfect and beautiful and poetic

im glad they didnt change anything after carrie died because if they had written her out then we wouldnt get the emotional scenes with luke towards the end and we wouldnt get to see her using the force (execution maybe looked a little funky and like mary poppins but the moment itself was powerful) - it's the last time we would have ever got to see carrie perform and im glad they left her performance in tact and whole

i absolutely hope that jj doesnt reverse course and change what this film seems to establish about rey's parentage because i find it an incredibly satisfying way of resolving the answers about her identity (the question that the force awakens conjures in many senses) - the fact that she comes from nothing is thematically important and suggests (correctly in my view) that heroism and mental strength and goodness are not inherited values but very personal character traits

for me this film is the most thought-provoking of all of the star wars movies and is the most artistic - i was in a general haze after seeing it the first time because it ran so far against expectation and made me question so much of my pre-conceived ideas about the franchise - i saw it again and loved it even more and i want to see it again soon too because there are things i want to see and delve into in this film beyond just my usual star wars fandom - its a film that moved me and challenged me in equal parts and im glad for it for 2 key reasons:

1) it allowed for a new kind of star wars movie and was a glorious departure and success (in my opinion)
2) it breaks the repetitive cycle that star wars was inevitably trending towards - i still really like the force awakens and i dont really agree that it was that much of a repeat of a new hope - it felt to me more like a soft reboot than a remake because of the characters and situations it set up but it did inevitably stick to safety and seemed to put star wars on a predictable cycle for a trilogy (the same story happening over and over through the legacy of the skywalkers) - so the last jedi breaks those expectations and frees up the franchise (especially in the saga films) to change the direction of the saga - i think its telling that many people are struggling to think of how the ninth film will go partly because there's no pre-ordained road map which is something that the internet era of star wars fandom has never not had

im not sure yet where this movie will land in a personal arbitrary ranking of star wars films but i know at this point already that it will be near to the top

even if it wasnt a great film (and there has been some division) it's certainly a momentous film (partly because of its apparent divisiveness)

when i saw his ears and the glow and then his music came in i just felt safe again lol - it was a great scene and it truly felt like the "wise" yoda from the empire strikes back was back (they used the original puppet i think) and his words felt wise once again

frank oz is an utter genius
Yeah, the guy could have spoken nonsense I still would've nodded in agreement lol.

i liked that he didnt though lol - in the prequels they just made him speak normal things in reverse when its a little different in empire and return of the jedi

you're right that everything he says sounds wise whatever he says - but i liked that the content of what he said was so full of actual wisdom - i also like that they actually took the real puppet all the way to skellig michael (where they filmed) which means that the interactions between yoda and luke are really real - they legitimately hollowed out a fake rock and had frank oz control the puppet from inside the rock so it was a real physical performance - also interestingly they didnt enhance the yoda puppet with cgi at all the only thing they changed was colour grading (which they do for everyone), removing any puppet controls and adding the blue "force ghost" hue

also btw i saw this posted on twitter about a week ago:

"ppl are hung up on who rey's dad is & meanwhile chewie is right there. driving her to jedi practice. keeping the engine running. dropping her off to meet the new boyfriend he doesn't exactly approve of, but just tells her to get home safe. her search for a father figure is OVER"
