The 2022 Offseason Thread

jeff just pumping the breaks slightly on this - not saying it's not happening just pointing out that it's not a completely done deal yet

What the hell’s going on? Just give us Mike

What the hell’s going on? Just give us Mike

think he's mostly just putting it out there that they've interviewed a load of guys today (and may still have some to go)

but it at least sounds like from the michigan end that they're treating this like basically a done deal (zrebiec said earlier today in a reply to someone that macdonald has always wanted to be coaching in the NFL so i dont think he's got any particular attachment to michigan or CFB that was just a means to an end)

So does anyone have notes on mike macdonalds defense? It looks like the basis for it is a nickel with 2 standup edge rushers, with mixed in zone blitz and man-zone concepts, I’ve seen a lot of 2-4 and some 5-1 looks.

Pre snap it doesn’t look too far off from winks, there’s always a thought of “who’s coming and who’s going?” But the blitz is a lot less exotic, the coverages appear vanilla but diverse, and simulated pressure is key over manufactured pressure, 5 man rush is always made a threat and possibility, but a downhill 4 man rush looks to be the standard with a healthy dose of slot blitz sprinkled in.

I’ve never tried to really evaluate a defensive scheme, I’ve only keyed in on players and there’s I chance I don’t know what I’m talking about, but from what I’ve watched I feel like oweh, tavon, Humphrey, peters, and Elliott would all do very well in this defense. Bowser possibly because he makes a slot blitz so lethal but Michigan didn’t have a player they could use like macdonald could use bowser.

queen idk, I feel like I saw lots of LB in man vs TE and RB.

notably winks defence can be tough on LBs - so if this really is simplifying LB play then that would be cool

worth pointing out that like Wink, MacDonald was a LB coach - where wink coached CJ and designed a defence around him (even after he left), I wonder if macdonald adapts the defence around queen somewhat

Which elliot?

pretty sure it’s all formality at the point. Ravens want to honor the planned interviews still. The fact that MacDonald isn’t doing recruitment trips anymore is very telling. Hopefully Ravens can sweet talk Cullen back into becoming a assistant coach here again since he’s going to be looking for a new gig. I’m sure Harbs will tell him if he doesn’t get hired as a DC elsewhere, there’ll be a position here for him.

cullen’s options will depend on what happens with Anthony weaver and whether he manages to find a DC job anywhere else or stays here as DL coach and also whether Cullen can find a DC opportunity anywhere too

Regarding Macdonald, I was asking someone in a Discord chat that I'm part of for more information. Dude's a die-hard Michigan fan. So this is what I got.
