The 2022 Offseason Thread

Regarding Macdonald, I was asking someone in a Discord chat that I'm part of for more information. Dude's a die-hard Michigan fan. So this is what I got.

I mean I imagine he’ll build the defence around the players we have and for the kinds of guys we want to bring in - he’s got a chance to set up this defence almost any way he wants because we’re rebuilding and the guys we’ve got locked in like marlo, oweh, queen, madubuike are scheme versatile

What point would that be?
I’m a Lamar stan but it’d be nice to see him play a full season when he gets that IBS taken care of. I can’t speak for @Deebo813 but I’m wary of handing out so much money to Lamar if he’s going to make dumb decisions on the field like he did last season, though I’m very confident that it was due to playing hero ball behind a shaky line. I have a feeling we’ll see a dominant performance from Lamar this season though, similar to his MVP year

It is quiet again on the D-coordinator's job. I know Cullen is being interviewed today. It would be so unfair to interview candidates with a decision already made no? Or is this just the way of the NFL? I cannot believe Harbs would treat his old D-line coach this badly.

but people keep forgetting that he was playing at MVP level for more of this season than he was playing poorly - like yes it's frustrating that he slumped but also that was just 4-5 games after 8 weeks of awesome play

I know it might sound crazy since the defense might suffer but after watching Mahomes and Allen I really wouldn’t mind drafting OL in round 1 and 2. Its not just Zeus we’ve struggled to replace, we also need to fix the interior of the OL, especially if Bozeman leaves. Tbh I wouldn’t mind going all in trying hard to retain Bozeman or making a push for Jensen and drafting OL first two rounds, defense badly needs help but I wouldn’t be upset if that’s the direction we were to go in.

Mahomes had a slump to and a really bad one too. Yes, his stats are great for a down year by his standards but from week 5-13 his play wasn’t all that impressive outside of that game against the Raiders. The Chiefs offense has only recently caught fire.

Shit, I wouldn't mind double dipping at OL at all lol. Hell, I'd even see if we can afford someone in free agency/trade for someone. I want to put a fortress around Lamar

You don’t need an elite defense to win a SB and we’re better suited then other teams to win with less then stellar defensive play because of how we control processions and slow the game down.

What I care about most atm is stopping the run, if we can still do that and do it at a level comparable to this year then I think we can get away with building a fortress around Lamar.

should lamar play on his 5th yr option to try and prove a point?

It'll tell a lot on whether he holds out or banks on himself. Joe 2.0. On the Ravens side right now I feel they can get fair value if they sign him now. I'm talking in 30-35 mil range. Might not save them money against the cap since I would hope they would flatline it and the 5th yr as it stands now is 23 mil. The Ravens could also do a wait and see but if he blows it up his market is skyrocketing but also we see he bleeds (injuries and the IBS that was mentioned earlier)

mahomes made more mistakes during that period but the chiefs offence was still one of the most efficient and explosive offences in the league at that point - just their defence was horrible until about midseason

Well, if I'm Lamar, there's no way I'm taking something in the $30-35M range.
Deshaun Watson is at $39M
Dak is at $40M
Josh Allen is at $43M

The lowest case scenario is you argue he's in "that range", which would put him right around $40M on average. Lamar has ver little reason to accept anything that doesn't have a 4 in front of it at this point, and I think the Ravens would know they're wasting their time with offers below that.

It's going to be $40M+ in AAV, and its going to be north of $100M in guaranteed money.

stopping the run is not that big a deal against playoff offences anymore - if you cant get pressure and/or you cant cover then it doesnt matter what you're doing against the run

and if we build a fortress (which i agree we should build a wall for him) it's not going to be necessarily to run the ball more - if anything it should be to protect lamar so he can go bombs away with this receiving corps we've built

and it seems only idiots have suggested anything else
even EDC basically said last offseason they already know they're going to be paying him and they already know it's going to be huge - both the front office and lamar are both on the same page in that sense - it's the details that are stopping this from being a done deal already

Why are you concerned about stopping the run when pretty much the majority of the teams you'll need to beat to get to a SB have the ability to just throw the ball up and down the field on you at will?

Like stopping the run will help you beat Cleveland. And probably Pittsburgh. I don't know how super valuable it is to beating Buffalo, or Kansas City, or Cincinnati, or Los Angeles Chargers. Those are the teams I'm worried about for the next 5-10 years.

I'd rather have a strong secondary, a solid interior pass rush (which we don't have at all) and be mediocre or even below average against the run. I think that defense is more competitive in this NFL climate.

I don't think you can be terrible against the run and win, but I don't think you need to be great at it either. 49ers, Rams, Bengals, Chiefs. I don't think any of these teams has a great run defense at all. By rankings, they're generally fine, but they all average over 100 yards rushing/game allowed.

Kansas City is 30th in YPC allowed. Green Bay was 28th. New England, Dallas, Cincinnati, Buffalo all in the bottom half of the league.
