The 2022 Offseason Thread

I thought Lamar like the length of Mahomes (and the fact that said contract is effectively fully guaranteed).
Well he's never getting like 10 years and Mahomes contract isn't anywhere close to effectively fully guaranteed. Mahomes deal is essentially a series of one year options that get renewed a year ahead of time. If Mahomes gets an Alex Smith-level leg break and never plays again, the Chiefs will be able to erase a huge portion of his contract.

If he got an Alex Smith injury they still would not cut him because even if it took 2 years to come back, like it did for Smith, you would still have to pay him whether he is on your roster or not for that recovery time.

The dead money for cutting him is just so cost prohibitive that they might as well have fully guaranteed the $450 million because it’s the same result.

yeah, not really. Two years, sure, but that leaves like 6-7 years left on the deal. He would get very little, if any, from those 6-7 years. As of today, there's zero dead money left on his deal from 2026-2031, and its a trivial amount of dead money in 2025.

If Mahomes suffered a catastrophic injury today, and couldn't play again he has guaranteed money that covers the next three years, which is for just under $108M in total.
There would be a little over $336M that he would never see. Chiefs wouldn't pay it (unless they felt super generous), and they could theoretically have no dead money beyond 2024 if they didn't want to.
So on a $450M extension, they could not pay up to $336M of that as of today.

I don't know who on Earth told you that Mahomes had anything close to a fully guaranteed contract, but they were way, way, way, way, way, way off, and clearly never looked at the contract or the structure of it.

Ordinarily we wouldn't care, but Victor was put on the non football injury list. Unless we signed someone, that 5th spot is probably his. So something weird to monitor

I mean... he's standing by his source. In those cases, I would almost guarantee his "source" is either a trainer who has worked with Dobbins, or somebody within the Ravens facility.

If I were Dobbins, I'd say nothing. He loses either way.

Agreed

So Dobbins goes on PUP . Maybe that reporter was right about him not being a starter for game 1.
Yea I don’t think he’ll be ready honestly. Too bad of an injury

To think he wouldn’t start on pup is a pretty ridiculous thought. That’s a brutal knee injury, he might need to adapt his running style just to have a career, I figured he was being way too ambitious in those tweets

Rap Sheet with an update saying Stanley may be the one who spends the shortest amount of time on the PUP list.

I'm not panicking, but it's at least a little disappointing to me that between Edwards, Dobbins and Peters, at least one of them couldn't be ready for practice after basically 10-11 months post-surgery. I don't fault the Ravens for rushing it and none of these guys need more than minimal reps to get ready realistically, but I guess I just expected a little better progress.

Stanley hopefully back sooner than later, but he's still biggest concern for me. There's still heaps of lack of clarity about his injury, recovery timeline, etc. There's no like benchmark or comparison for his injury, because basically nobody knows what it was or how long it will take.
