Welcome to the Ravens, Hayden Hurst and Lamar Jackson

So lately there has been talk of Lamar possibly starting THIS year.

And while I don’t necessarily think it’s going to happen, there’s a part of me that’s kinda scared that it COULD happen with a few scenarios.

One is if Joe Flacco just shits the bed this season (because he just doesn’t have it anymore, or if he’s being a little bitch about Lamar being drafted and has a “fuck it” attitude). This would throw Harbaugh into panic mode and prematurely start Lamar hoping that Lamar can turn things around to save the Ravens season and Harbs job.

It’s a no brainer that Lamar needs good coaching and practice to get him ready to compete in the NFL, if thrown into the fire this could be detrimental to his growth and career as a QB. And that scanerio is a little worrisom to me.
Flacco has been shit last 3-4 seasons and was sat during jags game. Wouldnt surprised me if jackson became starter during season

For this year, I think Jackson only starts if we're completely out of playoff contention or if Joe and RG3 get hurt.

I hope you’re right. Let’s hope RG3 makes the squad lol
RG3 couldn't read his palm if it was right in front of him, let alone the field. He's a camp arm and if he makes the squad he will have to do it on his own merits. When he was with the skins the skins stopped running the zone read because he wanted to be a pocket passer. He took away his strengths to the detriment of the team. He's an emergency option and a camp arm and that's all I expect from him.

Lamar Jackson can read a defense and he wen to his 2nd read more than every other QB in this draft class except for one other. Also 72.3% of his runs were also designed runs. He's a pass first guy and I'm excited. I will enjoy seeing his progress during training camp and preseason and any packages that he is brought into this season, if in fact Roman & Mornhinweg do design some for him.

Not sure which coach said this, but I believe it was Urgan and Mornhinweg. I believe they said they would be working with him before and after practice to throw everything at him and start working on his mechanics.

Yes, a lot more to be excited about than I previously thought with Lamar. But all the more reasons to take time with him. He still needs ti be better at understanding coverages and manipulating defenses. He needs to learn to stay in the pocket. That's not a criticism btw, he just never had one and he needs to learn how to play when he does. And of course the mechanics need work.
Overall there's nothing that he won't be able to correct. Just give him some time so he can maximize his potential before seeing the field.

I can see us keep RG3 but I’m not sure we will. I don’t think we need RG3 to develop Lamar since we already have coaches to provide that type of input. If we keep RG3 it’ll be to simply have a veteran backup. We had Taylor for years behind Joe and he was a totally different QB. Taylor is more similar to Jackson than anything. The real reason to have a veteran QB back up Joe is due to health concerns now surrounding Flacco. I think it’s a 50/50 that we keep RG3 on the 53.

watching NFL Total access, afc north draft grades, and these are direct quotes...

david carr: "im giving the ravens a C, only because i think they need to go all in with lamar jackson and i dont think theyre gonna do that with joe flacco and their pro style offense".... he gave every team a C, and implied that A: jackson cant play a pro style offense, and B: we didnt draft jackson to be the eventual starter.

DeAngelo Hall: "when you look at anthony averett on film, you know, technique wise, hes up there with denzel ward and jaire alexander, but he fell because hes not fast and explosive like those guys" ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME LOLOLOLOL these guys are professionals at this....

youre right that he never had much of a pocket, but he stares a pass rush right in the face and delivers very well, he has zero panic to him. i dont think staying in the pocket will be an issue at all.

Urban is a godsend for both flacco and Lamar.

right guy for the right position.

I saw that and couldn’t believe they said that. First, Carr should have known that out Mornhinweg and Roman have worked with mobile qbs in the past. I’ll give him a pass on James Urban. I couldn’t believe Hall didn’t know Averett was fast and explosive.

Pretty sure Carr hates the Ravens and I don't believe I've ever heard him say something good about us. In any case, he's a dumb fuck because Jackson can certainly play a "pro style" offense. Did Carr already forget that the Eagles won the SB with an RPO offense? Or how about Deshaun Watson destroying the league before getting hurt? If Jackson can work on his mechanics and fix a few things then he can absolutely start tearing up the league. I'm actually excited to watch our pre-season games this year to see a glimpse of our future.

I remember seeing a few times when he panicked and rushed into a pass rusher. It happens, it's just something he'll have to learn, trust his blockers.

Happens to all of them. Shit tom Brady is Praised for his poise in the pocket but he sees ghosts after one hard hit and starts sliding and grounding anytime he sees a good first step. I'm just saying pocket poise, from what I've seen, is probably the 2nd best aspect of his passing game after his release.

This is just a paragraph from Mike Tanier from Bleacher Report on Jackson. He loved this pick and gave it an A+. Compaires Jackson to Marcus Mariota.

Contrary to much draft prattle, Jackson operated effectively from the pocket and consistently identified second and sometimes third reads. The Louisville offense he ran was no more gimmicky than any other modern college offense. Jackson was responsible for mastering complex terminology and making pre- and post-snap decisions. He's roughly as “NFL ready,” from a mental standpoint, as the typical first-round quarterback prospect.

Every analyst basically is saying that there is no overlap between Flacco's and Jackson's skill sets and that an offense can't possibly exist that both can play in. It's like they think Joe Flacco can't move and has only thrown back shoulder fade passes for the past 9 years.

Media are really idiots. All they really need to do is add a few plays that accentuate Jacksons skill set.

It feels like none of them have watched a Ravens' game or a Louisville Cardinals' game. They're just parroting what they've heard.

DeCosta said Derwin James would've been the pick @16. They thought he was one of the best players in the draft and it was tough to trade down. But wanted to get more picks in the 3rd and 4th round.

Totally agree and it doesn't make sense. You'd think they would like to stand out from the rest of the Mediots and want to do their job well.

I talked about this during the offseason in 2017 and mentioned how much I'd love to see the Erhardt Perkins system in place here. It won't happen at this point due to everyone being WCO, however the Erhardt Perkins system and verbiage is just so much better and so many variations of a play can be run.

In retrospect the trade down was a good move since it allowed us to get Jackson for a cheap price compared to our original draft capital. Passing on James though still stings.
