Harbaugh also mentioned Woodrum as the back up QB. I wouldn't take any of his answers regarding the Oline at face value.
As a side note, I would consider Woodrum preferable to Mallett.
Woodrum isn't preferable for that reason alone. He is more mobile, more accurate, has better awareness in the pocket, can throw guys open, has superior touch to Mallett and he has more upside.woodrum is only preferable to mallett because he's cheaper - i think all harbs was saying was that mallett most likely wont be coming back and we will have to look in other directions - he mentioned woodrum because he was brought up by the reporter and he's already on our roster...
but yes the way he was talking about oline suggests to me that we are 100% going to be looking to improve - and he mostly referred to them with regards to who would get first crack at the start rather than having it set in stone
the way i see it we should expect to see a lot of change at oline
but i did think it was interesting how he justified keeping alex lewis at left guard over james hurst given that the reason james hurst was so successful last year at left guard was because of his pulling and movement skills yet harbs wants to keep lewis there because of his exceptional movement skills - i think that bodes well for how lewis will fit in roman's pull-heavy scheme
Damn you’re making Woodrum sound like the next Aaron Rodgers...he’s really not that good. This board always had him way overhyped lolWoodrum isn't preferable for that reason alone. There are things about him I'd like him to improve( wind up motion...arm strength) and it's very possible he ISN'T a great backup. I can't say for sure just yet. But he's a better option than Mallett to my mind.
Separately as regards the Oline; I'd like us to go: Williams, Miller and Ragnow and be done with it.
A right side of Williams, Yanda, Ragnow....that's just ridiculous
No. Just pointing out that he's better than Mallett.Damn you’re making Woodrum sound like the next Aaron Rodgers...he’s really not that good. This board always had him way overhyped lol

i dont see that at all - we saw when woodrum went up against primary level backups and he had nothing - he has decent pocket awareness and an ok sense of touch on his passes but his arm isnt strong enough to make throws outside the numbers which in and of itself is prohibitive but i also dont see a huge amount of accuracy on his throws and they are often hard to catch and his vision beyond his hot reads is really disappointingly narrow - he throws to guys for yac but he doesnt throw them open or see the field well at all and while he sometimes manipulates defenders he really also telegraphs his throws with the long windup and staring down receivers
i dont see any upside with woodrum really at all tbh - id much rather have mallett although id rather have neither
But he’s not. And I don’t like Mallett either.
Each of the things I mentioned so far as his attributes, he does better than Mallett.
Mallett is terrible. He states down throws, he aims to wide open underneath throws...wildly inaccurate, etc.
I'm not running Woodrum for president. Really I am not but no way do I prefer Mallett to him.
This went from oline thread to Mallett vs Woodrum thread lol
I think that's fair to trust the staff and their judgement.. Its probable to assume as well that they may have felt Woodrum lacked the experience they desired.i mean mallett doesnt limit the way we run our offence, has the arm to make nfl throws and while wildly inconsistent can sometimes put together a drive where he pulls apart a defence
i dont see any of that in woodrum at all - and i dont think its close
do you not think that if woodrum was better than mallett (or even close to mallett's level) that we would have cut mallett to save the cap space and just ran with woodrum as our backup
that suggests to me that the coaching staff didnt even think it was close
I know that's right.Jeeze....you know its the offseason when the trending discussion here is Woodrum vs Mallett......
Id rather drink a rum and bang a mallett on some wood than compare the 2I know that's right.
Yes. Especially interesting considering we drafted a left guard last year.On the actual OL portion of this thread, it's clear this team really believes in Alex Lewis. Harbaugh continually talks him up, sometimes without even being prompted.
