The Offensive Line Thread

Hi all, LGCS27288 from the Ravens official message boards. Glad to see you all here!

It appears as though Howard isn't going to come in and be a world-beater by any means, but he's likely going to be the guy stepping in if there's an injury or ineffective play at RT or one of the guard spots. Since depth was a huge concern, I would definitely be glad to have him here as long as his physical goes well.

Howard would be the immediate starter if he is signed.

Signed Howard, brings relief to our O line, Wonder if the Wizzard of Oz can make some more magic happen with maybe a trade?

Im waiting to see the reaction of a lot of people here if Hurst is still starting come opening day.

Woot! Big man! Can I just point out how big our line is gonna be? It's not as big as Dallas or Oakland but it's probably the biggest line we've had since at least 2012. Comes close to our 2008 line in size.

Stanley is 6'5 315. Alex Lewis is 6'6 320. Jensen is 6'4 320. Howard is 6'7 330. You're in good shape when your smallest starter is Yanda at 6'3 315.

And with 6'4, 270 pound Nick Boyle at tight end? We might not be that good but we're gonna hit people hard.

Won't happen. If we have ANY cap room whatsoever.. Which I doubt we do. If we have cap room left, I think we should either acquire a good RB like Hyde or Matthews, or get some more depth along the line.

I'm sure that he'll compete with Hurst and could definitely end up starting, but he won't be given a starting spot immediately. As glad as I am to see Howard sign here, I wouldn't put money on him being the week 1 starter. The track record for 30 year olds coming off injuries and regaining their form is not exactly great (though there's definitely exceptions).

Either way, the Hurst/Howard competition is definitely going to provide a more assuring result than the Hurst/Wesley/Nembot competition.

I'm cool with West and Woodhead tbh. West is a downhill bruiser. You think he was a banger in a zone scheme? Dude is gonna be a heavy hitter this year running downhill.

I do like West and Woodhead but having another playmaker back there really wouldn't hurt. Just throwing Hyde's name out there because he's played with Roman before. He'd seem likely.

If not those two, if we can manipulate some cap room to go get more people in the future, then maybe we could consider going to get an Austin Pasztor, Gary Barnidge, Anquan Boldin, Brandon Flowers? Just throwing some names out there. We've gotten very lucky in getting Jeremy Maclin(who's a number one WR when healthy) and Austin Howard(an above average RT when healthy) this offseason. I think we need more depth, but I think the offense should be fine so long as everyone is healthy.

I'm more interested in seeing Buck Allen . Harbaugh and others have said he has been having a pretty good training camp so far.

Ive always heard Howard was slow footed but a road grader, hes older and coming back from a few injuries so hopefully he can get back some of his previous form. But even if hes diminished ill take him over Hurst any day of the week.

Yea - as disappointed as i was when Dixon went down, i dont want us to bring in another RB.

West and Woodhead are good for me. And Buck Allen can be the inbetween guy.... ability to run between the tackles and a little bit, and a pretty good pass catcher.

If anything, losing Dixon might force us to actually ride West instead of rotating our backs every 2-3 snaps and never letting either of them get in a groove. West seems to me like a guy who gets better and better with more carries.

If we have one more signing in us, im still holding out a little hope it will be Mangold. Though the complete and utter silence on that front leads me to believe that either he's still not fully recovered - or his asking price is WAY higher than what anyone has come close to offering, and he hasnt decided 100% that he wants to play for anything less.

Either way, as @The Raven pointed out - this is shaping up to be a BIG line... we should be able to move some people off the ball. Combine that with committing more the run, and even if the OL isnt great, hopefully we should be able to wear opponents Front 7's down which should open up the PA and deep passing game late.

I would love to have hyde

I agree that we're probably fine at rb. As long as the o-line is decent, we have runningbacks that can get the job done.

As for the o-line itself, we have a solid group of starters. We can win with Stanley-Lewis-Jensen-Yanda-Howard. Just gotta do whatever it takes to keep them healthy.

Austin Howard's current wikipedia page reads:

"Howard was signed by the Baltimore Ravens on August 4, 2017 after significant injuries to all of the team's offensive line during training camp"

.... "all"
