The Offensive Line Thread

If Jensen can be a good run blocker(he was already a good pass blocker last season in limited action) then the oline becomes average. Meaning I'm less concerned. I still trust Lewis 0 as a guard because he's a horrible run blocker, but he is a good pass blocker. If this line can be a good one, and we can somehow pull off a trade for a Carlos Hyde, or get a Ryan Matthews I will be much more confident in the offense. The most important thing we needed to do this offseason was to fix the running game.
I also thought Jensen held up better in pass protection than he did in the run game. Hopefully the added weight will help, though I hope that he's worked on his pad level and footwork.

Maclin, Jefferson, Woodhead, Howard, Carr... Seriously though, how crazy has this offseason been? Pretty sure I forgot some even. Damn! I'm excited.

I'm a touch skeptical of signing Howard. It's a desperation signing. He is turning 31 with not much athleticism to lose. Alex Lewis could be the best option at RT. Then Howard could try to catch on at guard. Maybe Yanda can play LG. Then Howard can compete with Eluemunor and Nembot for the guard job. It's not a negative perspective. If Lewis is so impressive at RT that you have to play him there. That is a win!! A young player drafted and he blows away the competition for the RT role. That is awesome!! Then if Eluemunor can impress at guard and win that job in competition. That would indicate he is one of a very impressive specimen. And or intelligent player that matured fast although inexperienced.

I feel like we (the fans) have given up on the idea of Lewis seeing snaps at RT. It could very well be his best position. I thought he had the skill-set for OT even before he was drafted to play here. It just doesn't seem like our FO feels the same way, so I doubt we'll see him at OT barring injuries.

3 years, 16 million. A little more than 5 mil a season. Likely backloaded. Should be our last move.
Sorry, really late to quote you here, but I don't see anyone else mentioning it.

It's $5.1M in year one, so it's not backloaded too heavily.

Edit: Just checked and it's $5.5M in base salary year one. It's REALLY not backloded. Seems more front loaded than anything to ensure the cap hits if he gets cut later are minimal.

Jesus, 3 years, 16 million? This guy better have some real juice left. That is solid starter money.
I'd like to know what the bonus and guarantees money along with total structure of the deal before saying implying that it's a lot of money. I agree it's starter money, but the contract could be team friendly.

Hmm. Interesting. We view him being here for the long haul potentially then and can cut him with little to no consequences. Not bad, not bad at all.
If Austin Howard can remain a solid player for three years, then we'd have three of our starters set for the next two at least in Stanley, Yanda, and Howard. I think we were counting on Goose starting towards the end of the year too. So we still might heavily address oline next draft, and I will be calling for it. But next offseason should be dedicated to the offense(resigning Wallace, maybe another TE, more olinemen or something). If Howard pans out we don't have much to worry about for next offseason as we won't have significant free agents and a decent amount of cap space before cutting anyone. Huh.

There are team options each year though, so it gives the team an out without too much dead money. Seems to be a fair deal

Yesterday there was a big sigh of relief that was felt on two coasts. It began in Maryland when Austin Howard was signed and Joe Flacco let out a huge exhale. Once news hit thr airwaves and message board, @Lost_In_Translation let out another exhale that could have causes an earthquake from Colorado to California.

Now let's have Greg Roman design some plays to let our running game take advantage of Austins power blocking and pulling.

Nice signing, Oz

Spotrac is reporting that we are over the cap by $2.1M on the rule of 51 and $19.9M over altogether. Is this accurate and if so, how do we figure we'll get under the cap and make any signings this year if needed.

Edit: Spotrac not OTC.
