Lamar Jackson

Really? Fans are selfish? Jeeez, the average blue collar fan can’t even afford to go to a fk’n game any more. Poor Lamar should get his 250 mil guaranteed money whilst I can’t even have dreams of how I could even spend that kind of money in my lifetime or 5 generations of my family. Lol. I don’t feel one bit sorry for Lamar, and I don’t feel sorry for the billionaires who pay him, and having an opinion has no bearing on what happens with Lamar’s contract situation. He gonna get paid very nicely.
Yeah, I'd say fans are a bit selfish. At the end of the day we want him to take any deal offered, and then won't give a fuck when he's forty and barely able to walk (seriously, a lot of retired players are physically fucked up). Most fans don't really care about individual players, only the team and want the player to only care about the team rather than their own future.

You all need to stop posting 7 pages a day by the time I wake up. Too much to catch up on, yet at the same time it’s too funny not to read through it

Its dam near towards the end now so if he really isnt answering calls its likely cause he did everything he possibly could do.. if you not gonna give me what i want, no need to talk
Hopefully that’s not true , would mean Lamar is gone

I’m sure Lamar will be set for the rest of his life , immediate family included, with any final deal on his next contract.

Well that’s your opinion but I disagree with the generalization. I mean I think a vast majority would like to see Lamar get a FAIR deal and be our QB for the future. The debate is around all of the details about what is a fair deal.

Personally I do care more about the team then I do the individual player. I have been a Ravens fan since 1996. Players come and players go. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about them tho. Football is a game that they choose to play. They know the risks, they know the potential rewards. Their decisions to accept the risks and while I hate to see any injury I also can’t lose too much sleep over it. Too many other real life issues for me. Lol

Let's see 133 gtd money up front in signing bonus. The highest ever. Another 50 or so gtd cuz he's uncuttable thru base pay and whatever bonuses. Yeah I'm a little selfish if you want to call it that. If you want to talk about players being f'd up they know the risks and even just making the minimum you can be pretty much set since a lot of people don't even make the minimum they get in 20 yrs. These guys also got free college education to further their career. You can be f'd up permanently in a low paying career. Who cares about George from Ohio that got his hand mangled from a machine in a manufacturing plant. Bottomline there is health insurances that was bargained thru the CBA. No different for workman's comp/disability pay for the regular joe.

The only feasible way we can’t match in theory is if they do an astronomical signing bonus. Base salary and roster bonuses can be converted easily. Hard for there to be a way not to match.
Signing bonuses allow for proration also. But bonuses don't have to be prorated. So team could easily say we're going to do a $50M roster bonus, payable this year, that counts entirely against the 2023 cap. Ravens wouldn't be able to handle it cap-wise.

And then they just put in the contract the bonus can't be converted. Not overly difficult to do. Teams rarely do it now because they want the ability to manipulate the cap. But this would be a rare instance of a team structuring it to prevent another team from matching.

we shouldnt feel some type of way cause theyre rich and we are poor or that they had a free college ride and we had to pay..

The gtd $ at signing isn't just one payment. Its typically what will be gtd in year the first few years of the deal. Nobody is laying out a $133M cash flow in year 1. Not even the richest owner will do that.

For example, Kyler got $103.3M gtd at signing. That's made up of:
Signing Bonus: $29.0M
2022 Salary: $1M
2023 Salary: $2M
2023 Option Bonus: $36M
2024 Salary: $35.3M

So he basically gets 3 years of fully gtd money at signing. But its not paid out all at once.

Realistically, year 1 cash received by Lamar is probably going to be very comparable to what he'll get on the exclusive tag this year. Year 1 I would imagine he gets somewhere in the neighborhood of $50M in total payouts. He'll just get gtd $ for likely 3 years.

But no reason for Lamar to accept those terms. I’m sure he’d much rather have the ability for that roster bonus to be restructured because it’s more money up front and longer term security on his deal with that being prorated and the increase in dead money later in the contract. Protects him if he sucks or if he’s great and needs a new deal. Forces the team to the table earlier in the latter circumstance.

I haven't posted for a while since the lack of information made it impossible for me to have a reasoned opinion.

But, assuming the ESPN report about the negotiation is correct, it doesn't seem likely that continued negotiation 1-on-1 is going to lead anywhere when the gap is that large. So, either Jackson's demands are completely unreasonable, or there are teams willing to go that far in guarantees. The only way to find out is to use the non-exclusive tag to let him test that market.
If there are teams willing to pay 250+ in guarantees, then good for him, I don't see the Ravens ever paying that so if that's the case then you take the 2 1st even if it is less than you'd like for a player of that caliber.
The other outcome is that there isn't another team willing to shell out that much, and then Jackson will have to come down from an asking price that seems to be far out of the Ravens range. And they can still match an offer that he'd sign if they panic.

I don't see how the exclusive tag would help the negotiations in any way, Jackson should then just decide to sign it and get silly money for one year and then have even better leverage next year.

I'm cool with him staying, and I'm cool with resetting if the financials become too outrageous.

Fair enough but 133 guaranteed shatters this.

Only talking about the first year. In this case, Lamar gets at least $50M in year 1, so he's very happy with that. He's still going to get 75-80% of that guaranteed anyway, and smart teams have stopped caring about dead money impact 5-6 years down the line, because its a sunk cost. Depending on who the team is, they may be adding void years to the end of it anyway.

OK, but that's just Kyler. Wilson just got $124M gtd at signing, so $133M doesn't shatter that. Realistically, Ravens probably need to be in the $140M range in terms of gtd at signing $ to even be competitive in the marketplace.

Also, for context, Kyler's first 2 and 3 years of the deal are actually pretty low. Murray is making $69M in the first two years, and just under $108M in the first three. That's not enough to get Lamar signed.

Wilson is making $85M in the first two years, and $124M in the first three years. Ravens need to beat that.
Plus when you factor in that just playing under the franchise tag for the next two years will likely net Lamar right at ~$100M, whatever deal Lamar gets will almost certainly need to involve $100M in the first two years, and probably $135-140M in the first three years (the gtd at signing portion).

What does this have to do with anything?
Nothing. It always cracks me up when people question Lamar’s intelligence. I think they’re just projecting. @Thezone27, you’re an idiot.

Now Stephen A says he talked to someone close with Lamar and Lamar has never asked for a fully guaranteed contract. All this damn speculating.... ESPN just keeps throwing out stuff to see what sticks, even Sarah Ellison said all the contradicting reports are coming directly from ESPN.

IMO, Lamar has been asking for a fully guaranteed deal like Watson's . I'll be surprised if we find out later that this was not the case.
