Lamar Jackson

Of course we can, well just be unlikely to compete for a title while going through growing pains with a rookie or bridge QB for a year or two. Not ideal, but neither is 260M if thats really his price
TB and LA did OK recently going the FA route.

also worth noting that 2023 will likely be one of our smallest draft classes in a while (barring another unexpected hollywood-like trade) - we're currently only slated for 7 picks (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6) with no comp picks on the horizon either for 2023

just worth factoring that tidbit into the 2023 offseason too
Yup, also makes it more challenging to make mid-season acquisition via trade. Less draft capital to use and extremely challenging to give any long term contracts to acquired players at this point. Could buy a rental for a mid-rounder of course, but people expecting a mid-season trade for like a long term #1 or #2 WR are probably going to be disappointed.

I’m not a fan of the wait and see approach. Whatever he is asking for now, does it stay the same with a Super Bowl ring? My guess is no.

So the price goes even higher. I hate that the Browns exist because I know that contract is being taken into consideration.

If I was Lamar I would bring it up as well. None of these guys that have signed have done what I have done. None of these guys have carried an offense like I’ve had to (at times forced)

But his point is, do you just give him whatever he wants? I don’t think you do. I love the guy but Watson’s deal is clearly outlier right now. Have to imagine that once a couple of other QB deals come in and they’re not fully guaranteed, that’s the push they need to get a deal done. And if it for some reason becomes the norm going forward, we aren’t the ones setting the trend. It might cost more for the Ravens in the long run but that doesn’t mean you just cave now just in case that happens.

Further confirmation Lamar has no idea what he is doing in these negotiations. Nothing wrong with a lack of agent, but your negotiations need to be based in reality

that's the point, we have a lot of growing pains and it's not that easy to find a franchise QB.

ravens twitter is already a mess lol - lots of "lamar" fans masquerading as ravens fans coming out of the woodwork demanding everyone be fired

im gonna be surprised if lamar even gets tagged next year because id be surprised if the ravens got to march without negotiating a deal with him - the leverage lamar has in 2023 with what lamar's tag would do to the cap flexibility of the team massively incentivises the organisation to get something done before they have to slap the tag on him

I actually don't think the tag is catastrophic next season. The season after is a non-starter though.

If Lamar wins a SB, whatever he's asking for now, the Ravens will pay. If he increases his offer, he probably won't get it.

Here's the reality for me... Mahomes has done more. Can argue all day of the subjectivity of "better weapons, better coaching", etc., but it doesn't really matter. He won an MVP, and he played in two SBs, winning one, before he signed his extension.

His extension was at $45M AAV, with like 30% guaranteed money.
The guaranteed money is ridiculously low, agreed. Wilson got like 2/3 guaranteed, Josh Allen got like 60% guaranteed, Kyler got 82% guaranteed.

If he's asking for 100% guaranteed on anything above like a 3-4 year deal, I don't think the Ravens will ever give it to him. Not even with a Lombardi. Like it or not, I think that's the reality. And I don't blame the franchise one bit for it.

I think asking for $50M AAV is realistic. I think asking for 5-6 years is realistic. I think asking for probably 80% of it guaranteed may be realistic. If he's not in that ballpark, he'll get tagged, and that's that.

I agree. I just wish we could know what was on the table so we can really have fun with the topic

I agree with this except with the Watson deal being an outlier. I say that because the deal exists and no agent would ever let a team act like it doesn't

I mean we’ve had what, 3 other contracts since then and none fully guaranteed? It’s an outlier right now until it isn’t. On the same token, I totally understand why Lamar would be asking for it. Simply reality is that Watson’s deal fucked everything up because no one else wants it to become the norm rather than an outlier.

Yep.

Who else is due for a contract soon?
